New NCAA rules allowing college athletes making money off their likeness -- and signing autographs -- will mean amateurs are coming to cardboard very soon with Panini America now in on the action.

The company revealed Thursday that it has joined teams with OneTeam Partners, a leader in the group licensing space, to "produce, distribute, promote and sell college trading cards featuring current men’s and women’s college athletes who opt-in to OneTeam’s College Athlete Group Licensing program." Panini intends to create athletes' cards for several sports including football, basketball, baseball and the Olympic sports for both men's and women's competitors in the program.

"The trading card market is booming, and Panini is the leader in the category," said Ahmad Nassar, CEO of OneTeam, in a prepared release. "With its existing current college licenses, there is an amazing opportunity to make co-branded college and current college athlete cards for the first time in history – across schools and men’s and women’s sports. The group-licensing model is key to including athletes in broad-based licensed products like this."

The kids will have something -- something that's only for them -- to look forward to at The National next week.

Details are still coming together, but at least one major card manufacturer (Hint: Panini America) will have a promotion just for kids who collect at the show that tips off in Rosemont, Ill., on Wednesday.

Kids are encouraged to stop by the Blowout Cards booth (No. 854) for the inside information on where to go at the show -- and as an added plus, we'll have free T-shirts for all kids under age 12, too.

The comeback includes a throwback at The National this year.

Wild Card revealed its wrapper redemption plans on Wednesday for this year's National Sports Collectors Convention that starts one week from now in Chicago.

It includes its newest release and a nod back to the set that started it all in 1991 -- and only 500 30th Anniversary Retro Boxes will be available at the show.

A new set of Topps baseball cards is highlighting some of the biggest names in Negro Leagues history as part of a push to bring baseball back to Nashville.

Music City Baseball, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Adidas and The Fluent Group all helped bring to life the 2021 Topps x Nashville Stars set, which is live today via Topps.com. It's a 17-card set available in eight-card packs that will only be available via Topps for the next 36 days. They will be printed to order -- the number made is the number ordered -- after that window expires.

According to Topps, the "release of these baseball cards is one of Music City Baseball’s many contributions to the Negro Leagues Museum, including revenue sharing on all promotional items sold on their website." If an MLB team is award to Nashville, it would be known as the Stars, a nod to a past Negro League team in the city.

“The launch of these cards celebrates the players and the impact they made on the world of professional baseball,” said Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in a prepared release. “It’s an exciting opportunity for us to share the history while expanding the museum’s support base.”

It wasn't that long ago that auction houses were the home of mostly vintage cardboard but those days are gone to a degree -- now it's the big new legendary stuff (with big names of the past) that can heat things up quite a bit.

This weekend's sale over at Pristine Auction is a prime example of this, led by this treasure from Panini America ... and it's not alone with a number of impressive pieces heading into collector hands after bidding ends on Sunday.

ONE POWERFUL PULL 
The Item: A 24-legend 2020 Panini National Treasures NFL Treasure Chest 1/1 booklet card
The Price: $6,825 after 42 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Where do you start with a card like this when the left panel alone includes patch and tag pieces from the likes of Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. The middle? I spy Patrick Mahomes, Joe Namath, Roger Staubach and Drew Brees. And the right side? Well, that one includes Aaron Rodgers and Steve Young for starters on this quarterback classic. There's no need to name them all or overstate the obvious with this loaded 24-legend booklet as it's the only one that exists with all of these patch pieces embedded into it. Pristine calls it "nothing short of epic" and the final price should get even more dramatic before it ends. Collectors Universe has a new CEO.

Executive Chairman Nat Turner (at left) has been appointed to the role after Joe Orlando stepped down from the spot in the company where he has worked for 20 years. Collectors Universe is the parent company of Professional Sports Authenticator and Professional Coin Grading Service which was recently acquired by an investor group led by Turner, D1 Capital Partners and Cohen Private Ventures.

"I’m so proud of everything we’ve achieved as a team at Collectors Universe over the last 20 years," Orlando said in a prepared statement. "I know this is the right time for me to step aside because the company is stronger than ever. Nat has already demonstrated that he knows what’s required to scale the business in order to meet customer demand while also protecting the company’s reputation that has been carefully built on trust, integrity and transparency. This was a hard decision for me but I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and staying active in the hobby, my personal passion."

It will be war during three days of this year's National Sports Collectors Convention.

Well ... box wars that is.

StarStock Breaks will host a 64-person box war tournament beginning on Thursday at the show and then things hit center stage at 10 a.m. on Friday before finishing at that same time on Saturday. Blowout Cards is the box provider for the event and spots will go on sale at StarStock.com/breaks at 3 p.m. today.

"Every round the winner will take all the cards from that round. The user who pulls the most-valuable card will be determined by the Market Movers website and will move on to the next round," read a StarStock announcement. "Spots for the break will cost $250 each and the rounds can be seen below."
