There are more than a few reasons that the biggest high-end baseball card release of the year, 2018 Topps Transcendent Collection, is the biggest release yet in its the three-year history of the brand.
Ronald Acuña Jr., Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto are three rookie reasons it's kind of a big deal. A Superfractor autograph in every box is another. Then there are the booklet or patch cards to be found as well as the cut autographs and memorable sketch cards also found every single time one of the 83 pricey boxes gets cracked.
But the biggest reason?
Every box of 2018 Topps Transcendent Collection includes an invitation to a VIP party to meet Mike Trout, MLB's biggest star today. That ticket alone is commanding serious cash (click link to see latest price) in auctions or for those who land one via a group break. The event is set for Feb. 22 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and includes lodging and accommodations, admission to a dinner, a meet-and-greet and photo with Trout, an autograph from Trout and then a shot at other prizes and freebies from the event -- and there will be plenty on that front. (All you have to do is get there.)
Every box includes a base set and a set of sketch card reproductions, 50 autographed cards (two 1/s and many other parallels in the mix), a Trout 1/1 Through the Years auto, a 1/1 patch auto or auto book, one sketch card, one oversized cut auto and 1952 Topps Superfractor auto.
How big of a deal is this one? Well, at least 15 cards from the release are carrying $1,000-plus asking prices on eBay right now -- the Ichiro Superfractor you see below is the high card at $11,999.99 or best offer. Meanwhile, a sealed base set of this one, framed cards without autos, recently sold for $1,000 on its own. (And there will be plenty to hit the auction site soon as many are still in transit between breakers and their new owners.)
A number of Transcendent boxes have been busted so far -- and you can see a sampling of them in the gallery below, which was culled from eBay auctions and cards shown off by other breakers online.
