He's had a long road to where he is today, but after a big game on Tuesday night a few more people might know his name.
He's San Diego Padres rookie third baseman Christian Villanueva and he hit three home runs Tuesday night in Denver. Why might the collecting focus be of added interest for a 27-year-old rookie?
Because he doesn't have that much cardboard at all.
Villanueva appears on just one Rookie Card -- a 2018 Topps Heritage card he shares with Padres pitcher Kyle McGrath -- and he doesn't really have a lot of past cardboard, either, considering he's been in the game professionally for a decade. He's hitting .429 with five RBI -- all from last night -- this season after playing 807 minor-league games and another 183 in foreign leagues before this year. He hit .344 with four home runs in 12 games for the Padres in his first MLB shot last season.
He appears on fewer than 100 different baseball cards -- mostly thanks to parallels -- with his only past ink coming in 2012 Bowman Chrome where he has 13 autos, a Bowman Black auto in Bowman that year and a pair of 2013 Onyx Platinum Prospects sigs.
That's it.
Meanwhile his newest card, a "Rookie Card" released via a non-traditional format, is among today's Topps Now lineup after this impressive night.
Villanueva's past minor-league stints include breaking in with the Texas Rangers' minor league clubs before several seasons in the Chicago Cubs' organization -- he was in the Ryan Dempster trade -- where he was blocked at third base by a guy you might know, Kris Bryant.
"I have a lot of dreams, I have a lot of goals, and I think, little by little, I'm starting to reach them," Villanueva told MLB.com. "Another dream come true, especially on a night like tonight, getting the first win. I was just happy I was able to play my part."
