Already rare: 2018 Topps 3D baseball card packs are sold out

Talk about demand ... it's definitely already there for this one.

The countdown clock on the latest Topps On Demand set presently shows 48 days and a few hours remaining for the arrival of 2018 Topps 3D baseball card packs, but there's one other line that matters the most right now with this release that should be one of the rarer larger-size sets of the year.

More importantly, the page also says "sold out."

It only took about a week for this modern-twist on the best of the best from 2018 Topps Series 1, Series 2 and Topps Update -- yep, notables from that not-yet-here set are in there -- to vanish. And, ironically, it's a modern twist on an approach to cardboard that arrived 50 years ago. Some of those cards in that past release can command serious cash in top condition.

Meanwhile, this set is stacked with a strong rookie crop that includes Shohei Ohtani, Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, Miguel Andujar, Rhys Hoskins, Rafael Devers and Juan Soto (hello, Update) as well as the veteran stars one would expect to see.

This one includes the 100 best cards from the three sets, giving them a three-dimensional feel. The eight-card packs were only initially available for $19.99 via Topps.com but it's not that simple if you want to land one of those key RCs. You get just five 3-D base cards per pack -- giving any one card odds of one in 20 packs -- and then three Insert Motion cards. They were set to ship seven-to-10 days after the sales window closes. The Motion inserts appear to be stacked, with 10-card pitcher and hitter sets but most importantly a 10-card Top Rookies set that includes a second shot at Ohtani, Acuña, Albies, Hoskins, Soto, Andujar, Devers, Amed Rosario, Gleyber Torres and Jack Flaherty.

A handful of eBay sellers are doing pre-orders for these packs already, asking upwards of $39.99 a pack, while completed sales have highs of $35. (Blowout will have a limited number of packs available when they are live.) Meanwhile, the relatively long odds for key players might spark strong eBay action with this limited release, which could be as low as 270 complete sets made for the entire product based on estimates and some number crunching.
