Auction Buzz: Beetlejuice NFT a first for Wack Pack star

What: An auction for an NFT featuring Beetlejuice

Why it's Buzz-worthy: As part of its Elite Comic, Video Game and TCG Auction, Goldin is selling a 1/1 NFT of Beetlejuice – not the 1988 Tim Burton film, but the star of many internet memes and a member of the vaunted Wack Pack from The Howard Stern Show. This is just the most recent example of a celebrity selling and profiting from an NFT of their likeness.

There's something different about this auction, though. In addition to owning the NFT and receiving a video of Beetlejuice telling his own life story, the winning bidder gets a physical 1/1 Rookie Card that has been autographed by Beetlejuice. The card is stylized after T206 tobacco cards with some additional twists.

As non-sport cards have become more popular, "Rookie Cards" of celebrities are garnering serious interest from collectors. This auction joins three categories that are usually much more distinct -- pop culture, trading cards and NFTs. The marriage of NFTs and physical cards has yet to turn into a widespread practice, but it makes sense as the market moves more toward digital transactions with many collectors still preferring physical items.

By mashing together cards and NFTs and integrating a pop-culture figure, there can be crossover appeal. Could this combination be a new turning point for the hobby? Might it bring traditional physical collectors over to the digital side and digital collectors to the physical side? It's certainly worth keeping an eye on.
