Auction Buzz: Iconic cards from all eras up for grabs Sunday

Sure, today and this week is about the newest of the new in 2023 Topps, but Wheatland Auction Services has some of the biggest of the big cards up for grabs in an auction ending on Sunday.

Everything from iconic Hall of Famer tobacco cards like Ty Cobb above -- a card presently at $7,500 -- to slabbed Rookie Cards of the Super Bowl QBs, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are all presently on the auction block beginning at just $5 with the sale ending this Sunday evening (7 p.m. Eastern).

Keep reading for a look at some of the pieces and details on even more that's up for grabs -- cards, lots, memorabilia and more -- via the Lancaster, Pa.-based company.

Some of the highlights in this first auction of the year for vintage baseball alone include legendary pieces such as the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig cards as well as a number of Mickey Mantle cards from the 1950s and 1960s (1952 Bowman, 1956 Topps and 1961 Topps for starters) and 1950s cards of Willie Mays (his 1951 Bowman Rookie Card, 1954 Bowman and 1955 Bowman). Joining them will be key cards from Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige as well as Rookie Cards for Hank Aaron, Sandy Koufax, Carl Yastrzemski and more. There also will be a number of T206 and T205 cards with Cobb, Cy Young, Johnny Evers, Zach Wheat, Miller Huggins, Rube Marquard and others in the mix, while full sets and near-sets in the sale will include 1957 Topps, 1958 Topps, 1964 Topps Stand-Ups, 1973 Topps, 1975 Topps and 1977 Topps among others. There also will be some runs of vintage lots to add to collections in bulk.

New cardboard also will have a strong place in this one with a 2000 Bowman Tom Brady Rookie Card (SGC 9) joined by NFL and MLB rarities from Justin Herbert Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Fields, Aaron Judge, Aaron Rodgers, a PSA 9 2003-04 Topps Lebron James Rookie Card and more. Other key names from the recent past and present who will be in play include Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Trevor Lawrence.

Among memorabilia pieces to be found here are autographed pieces from Brady, Pele, Muhammed Ali (on a dual-signed piece also with a Cassius Clay sig), Mike Tyson, Shaquille O’Neal, Ted Williams, Koufax, Aaron, Mantle, Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., and more from the sports world and beyond.
