Auction Buzz: Modern marvels (and more) end soon at Pristine

It wasn't that long ago that auction houses were the home of mostly vintage cardboard but those days are gone to a degree -- now it's the big new legendary stuff (with big names of the past) that can heat things up quite a bit.

This weekend's sale over at Pristine Auction is a prime example of this, led by this treasure from Panini America ... and it's not alone with a number of impressive pieces heading into collector hands after bidding ends on Sunday.

ONE POWERFUL PULL 
The Item: A 24-legend 2020 Panini National Treasures NFL Treasure Chest 1/1 booklet card
The Price: $6,825 after 42 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Where do you start with a card like this when the left panel alone includes patch and tag pieces from the likes of Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. The middle? I spy Patrick Mahomes, Joe Namath, Roger Staubach and Drew Brees. And the right side? Well, that one includes Aaron Rodgers and Steve Young for starters on this quarterback classic. There's no need to name them all or overstate the obvious with this loaded 24-legend booklet as it's the only one that exists with all of these patch pieces embedded into it. Pristine calls it "nothing short of epic" and the final price should get even more dramatic before it ends. In case you're wondering, the card notes that the Brady, Brees, Griese, Foles and McMahon swatches are game-used. It's an epic find with so much NFL success all in one spot.

ON THE CUSP OF GREATNESS
The Item: Giannis Antetokounmpo 2013-14 NBA Hoops Rookie Card -- (PSA 10)
The Price: $600 after 26 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: By Tuesday, this guy could have his first NBA ring to go with his MVP awards, All-Star nods and all that international attention. With that should come even more attention on his RCs and early autos and this is a prime example of how a basic flagship-style card in top grade can go for plenty ... and more than a few collectors (new and old) are grabbing the basics like this.

SHOWING HIS TALENTS
The Item: Shohei Ohtani 2020 Topps Inception Rookie & Emerging Stars Blue Autographs (/25)
The Price: $500 after 15 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Ohtani has been the talk of MLB for much of this season with his impressive slugging while also pitching ... successes piling up at a pace where the word "Ruthian" is coming into play more than one way. His 2018 MLB Rookie Cards and autographs are commanding big cash in many instances but autographed cards on the rarer side like this one from the years after all those RCs might be a smart way to go ... good cards with perhaps not as many bidders battling over them. This one also has a relatively bold signature that fills out the signing space well with colors that all feel comfortable despite a colorful and non-traditional design.

A MODERN-DAY THROWBACK
The Item: Chipper Jones 1991 Topps Rookie Card autographed -- (BGS/BAS slabbed)
The Price: $157.50 after 17 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Simple throwbacks with high-end touches -- in other words, signed Rookie Cards and other iconic cardboard from the recent past with added ink -- can have more appeal than you might think. There have been a lot of collectors in recent years collecting in this way and a signed Rookie Card in a slab is a classic option to have for a collector who might otherwise have everything else from that timeframe already.

GEM MINT GEMS
The Item: Joe DiMaggio 2017 Panini Flawless Ruby (/15) -- (BGS 9.5)
The Price: $84 after 10 bids (ends Sunday)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I opted to end with something simple and something new -- to show the depth of what's up for grabs in the auction ... everything from vintage sets to the new stuff showing off legends of yesteryear in new ways is in there. This is a rarer card in a top grade showing a legend of the past while including a ruby in it, too. There's something to be said for simplicity with this one and it could end up being a steal of sorts. We'll find out on Sunday.
