Babe Ruth coaching uniform on auction block via Heritage

A uniform worn by Babe Ruth is on the auction block and it's not yet surpassed the $100,000 mark with a couple days to go before the final gavel.

There's little doubt that Ruth's 1945 Esquire All-America Game coaching uniform will get there, though, as it's estimated by Heritage Auctions to top $200,000.

And that's nothing compared to what his New York Yankees jerseys have sold for, making this one a bargain.

This event was a decade after Ruth played his final game in MLB and less than three years before his death due to cancer at age 53.

"The pure, undiluted joy Ruth felt as he wore the offered uniform as a warring general against fellow inaugural class Hall of Famer Ty Cobb in the 1945 Esquire All-America Game is apparent in every photograph we've encountered from New York City's Polo Grounds, where Ruth had debuted as a Yankee a quarter century earlier," reads the auction listing. "It may not have been the major leagues, but in certain regards it was even better."

Heritage calls it "the most well-preserved Ruth uniform we've ever encountered, physically perfect in every regard without the first hint of staining or moth damage nearly ubiquitous in decades-old flannel." The history of this uniform's survival is simple -- according to Heritage, Ruth's widow, Claire, gifted it to a baseball executive and his family is putting it up for sale.

The next bid this one gets will take the uniform past the $100,000 mark and it should go even higher as a past Yankees jersey alone sold for a sports memorabilia record of $4.5 million. This won't get that high but Heritage notes that "this opportunity to own a genuine Babe Ruth worn uniform at a far more democratic price point will be a welcome one indeed to dozens of collectors."
