It's fitting that he's green ... he's generating plenty of it.

In the Twitter and meme galaxies, he's "Baby Yoda," but on Topps Now cards for The Mandalorian, he's "The Child" -- the 50-year-old silent (so far) alien boy that is the center of attention as the sci-fi western series plays itself out over on Disney+.

He's been a focal point of the series for all seven episodes so far, but he didn't make his cardboard debut in the weekly episodic Topps Now sets until the third pack -- and that's where we start to see his Forceful ways.

The Chapter 3 pack included three cards for the character -- a close-up, an in-cockpit scene that has been the source for many a musical meme online, and a distant shot where his green skin is still clearly seen. That pack sold 1,315 copies -- more than the first two weeks combined -- and the demand continued for the next two weeks after that as both topped the 1,000-mark despite diminishing Baby Yoda appearances. (He had just two cards in the Chapter 4 pack and one in the Chapter 5 pack.) We'll see if the demand for the series packs continues as a one-Yoda Chapter 6 pack closes its ordering window today over on Topps.com where these are only printed to order, meaning if 100 are ordered then only 100 are made. Meanwhile, the Chapter 7 pack -- open until Friday since the network has shuffled its release dates since, you know, some film arrived -- also is back on the Baby Yoda gravytrain with a single card appearance. Below is a rundown ...

--

Topps Now Mandalorian production numbers (all Baby Yoda cards in gallery below)
Chapter 1 pack -- 714 sets made (no Baby Yoda cards)
Chapter 2 pack -- 553 sets made (no Baby Yoda cards)
Chapter 3 pack -- 1,315 sets made (three Baby Yoda cards)
Chapter 4 pack -- 1,004 sets made (two Baby Yoda cards)
Chapter 5 pack -- 1,179 sets made (one Baby Yoda card)
Chapter 6 pack -- Closes today (one Baby Yoda card)
Chapter 7 pack -- Closes Friday (one Baby Yoda card)

Why does this matter? Well, the packs that carry a price of $19.99 for one but steep discounts of as low as $7.99 a pack if you buy 20 are serious hits on eBay so far -- especially considering they are just standard cardboard. (I expected there be to be demand ... but not this kind of demand.) The high price? A cool $84.99 paid for a Chapter 4 pack -- and that only includes two Yoda cards. It's not alone, either. The high for the triple-crown/Rookie Card Chapter 3 pack among completed eBay sales is $79.99 for a Buy-It-Now and $72 for an auction that generated 29 bids. There are more than 50 completed auctions showing sales of $25 or more -- and the active auctions show prices as high as $149.91 for a single Chapter 4 pack and a low of $59.97 for Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 packs with a modest volume. Remember ... none of the packs have sold more than 1,315 copies and I'd assume a good chunk of those buying were perhaps (we'll never know for sure) buying to keep, not flip. The demand among auction listings isn't slowing, either as one Chapter 3 listing is at $46 after six bids with three days to go.

Topps Star Wars Living Set
No. 58 -- Baby Yoda (print-to-order sales window closes tomorrow)

--

The Force of Baby Yoda might come into full view with the stats for the already well-established Star Wars Living Set, which dipped into The Mandalorian for the first time last week. The Child takes card No. 58 and this will be his only appearance in the illustrated set unless the character somehow shows up in later films or other series within the overall Star Wars galaxy as Topps limits appearances to once per film or series. Cards from this set typically sell around 1,000 copies per subject with their two-cards-per-week formula but the record is 3,909 set by Darth Vader -- the first card in the series -- with a low of 895 for a recent card of a lesser character. Baby Yoda could top Vader if you ask this collector -- though we won't know until sometime after the sales over at Topps.com end tomorrow. eBay resellers already have been selling the card ($5.50 the high actual sale) with asking prices pushing $8. I'd expect that could pick up once the actual sales number is known and the cards are in hand. The overall demand starting buoy will be the number sold directly by Topps.

--

Update (Dec. 31): Baby Yoda's Topps Living Set card demolished the previous sales record, more than doubling the Vader mark by selling 9,663 copies.
