Cooperstown is celebrating baseball cards a little more beginning in May.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's Shoebox Treasures exhibit will celebrate the stuff that collectors dedicate their time to every day. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the exhibit with some Hall of Famers on hand on the morning of May 25 before the Hall of Fame Classic game.
"The exhibit, spanning more than 700 square feet of space on the Museum’s third floor, will examine the history, design and production of cards, the 1980s boom that turned a child’s hobby into a multi-million dollar industry, and the joy and camaraderie that so many collectors have found in the hobby," reads an announcement from the Hall.
The museum's collection includes more than 200,000 cards and its funding goals were reached with donations. Some of the donors included Arizona Diamondbacks Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick, who owns the famed $3-million Honus Wagner T206 card.
According to the Hall, the exhibit will include four parts -- an exploration of baseball card history, an evolution of baseball card design, why fans collect baseball cards and “Holy Grails.” In all, there will be more than 2,000 cards on display in vertical drawers. It's also got an interactive element as visitors can also make their own virtual cards using six past designs.
"We heard from hundreds of museum visitors who said they wanted to see an exhibit on baseball cards,” said John Odell, the lead curator for Shoebox Treasures. “We knew that when we created this exhibit that it was going to be a deep dive, not just rows of cards in a case. We wanted visitors to see and learn about cards from the early days of 19th century tobacco cards to today’s glossy keepsakes. Finally, so many of our visitors have a passion for card collecting, and we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate their passion for these pocket-sized gems.”
