Benintendi's first jersey scorches at auction - will cards surge next?

The first jersey that Boston Red Sox Andrew Benintendi wore for his first official game commanded big money on the auction block over the weekend, reinforcing that last year's Rookie of the Year crop went deeper than just that one New York Yankees guy.

This jersey sold for $14,730 after 19 bids via Goldin Auctions after opening at just $1,000 -- and that was enough to make one wonder if there might be more action to come for the cards of the ROY runner-up in his sophomore season.

The biggest sale for Benintendi among recent eBay auctions was a $2,350 sale of this BGS 9.5/10 2015 Bowman Chrome Draft Orange Refractor Auto via BuyNiceCards last month, while five other sales of Benintendi cards have topped the $1,000 mark during the off-season.

Benintendi's status as the seventh-overall player drafted in the 2015 MLB Draft has him appearing on a lot of cardboard showing him both with the Red Sox and with the University of Arkansas where he hit .326 over two seasons with 20 home runs as a sophomore. He equaled that mark last season for the Red Sox -- 20 homers in his first full season -- with 90 RBI, 84 runs and a .271 average.

He's already pushing nearly 1,000 different certified autographs among his nearly 2,300 total baseball cards. His first autographs are among 2015 post-draft prospect products, a lineup that includes card appearances in Bowman Draft, Panini Contenders, Bowman's Best, Elite Extra Edition, Leaf Trinity, Leaf Metal Draft, Leaf 25th Baseball, Immaculate Collection College and Leaf Ultimate Draft.

Meanwhile, he's got more than 40 Rookie Cards from last season's releases from Topps and Panini America, a solid RC crop that includes Aaron Judge, Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson, Alex Reyes, Yoan Moncada and Yulieski Gurriel to name a few
