Blowout Cards may not catch 'em all ... but we're trying.
This Pokémon 1st Edition booster box sold for $360,000 via Heritage Auctions on Thursday night -- a mark that includes the buyer's premium and set a new record sale. That topped a $198,000 mark (also via Heritage) in September.
Our 36-pack box includes 396 untouched cards that could carry potential for perfect Gem Mint 10 copies of everything, including the rare Charizard card that has generated headlines on its own with some six-figure sales on its own in advance of the 25th anniversary of the game's arrival in the United States next February.
Here's what Heritage had to say about this one before the big sale.
"A Pokémon 1st Edition base set booster box that's sealed in its original shrinkwrap is the pinnacle of Pokémon box collecting," the listing read. "Created in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast, the set featured 102 cards, and most notably the Charizard. This box contains 36 booster packs, each with 11 cards for a total of 396 cards. These box sets have become very scarce, due to their low print run, and very few still remain in the sealed state. Since the cards haven't been handled, they are likely all in Gem Mint condition. In September 2020 we sold a similar box for $198,000. A PSA 10 1st edition Base Set Charizard alone recently sold for over $220,000 so there's no telling where this box will end up this time. If you 'gotta catch 'em all' then this is the lot for you! From the Pokémon Central Collection."
