Book It, Buzz: A Hollywood notable's ink for a notably low price

For years now, autographed books coming direct from the publishers -- or direct from the authors themselves -- have been an affordable way to collect ink from notable names in all realms of pop culture.

It's not a perfect system with stamps, fakes and autopens sometimes in the mix -- a problem for publishers to catch as they are not authenticators -- but thanks to dedicated collectors on the Blowout Cards Forum and elsewhere, those problems often get caught and fixed ... or at least become well-known enough to avoid if it's an issue that goes uncorrected.

Getting ink in-person is always best -- book tours still happen, of course -- but landing autographed editions from publishers, online sellers or celebs themselves via their websites or other appearances are common. So, with that said, here's the first of what just might become a monthly department here on The Buzz.

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: She's starred in all kinds of projects and all kinds of genres on both movie screens and TV screens over the years with Thelma & Louise, Beetlejuice, A League Of Their Own, The Fly, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Tootsie, Knight Rider, Fantasy Island, Family Ties, Fletch, Earth Girls Are Easy, Will & Grace, The Accidental Tourist, The Exorcist, Grey's Anatomy, Stuart Little, GLOW and Commander In Chief among them for starters. It's a résumé that also includes her own self-titled TV series, The Geena Davis Show and between all of these projects (and plenty of others) there are plenty of people who know her name and could be interested in some ink. Despite being among high-level projects since the 1980s, she only has certified autograph cards in a pair of Leaf Pop Century releases (2019 and 2022) and not a lot of standard cards in packs, either. However, her autographs aren't impossible finds as she's done private signings for OfficialPix and other dealers, too, in recent years.

Why this item: Price-wise -- half price in this instance -- this one was a no-brainer as signed photos are a bit pricier. The chain did a recent half-price slasher on many of its signed editions and, really, I should have done a few here but didn't. The League Of Their Own signed photo in the gallery below cost me about $70 years ago and I'm pretty sure her cost from signings I higher now -- probably $80-100 for authenticated photos and higher for items or multi-signed pieces. The only drawback for a book auto like this is pen and visual appeal as an assembly line sig like this can be quicker and less detailed -- but this one is comparable to certified autos other than maybe pen choice.

The Bottom Line: An A-list auto for the price was a no-brainer and there might still be signed editions on shelves in stores or on major chain sites to consider.
