Do you like Buzz Breaks? Today's your day then as we launch 12 in 12 -- a series of a dozen breaks of past wax boxes and wax packs in a dozen hours. We'll post one every hour on the hour all day long today ... this is Hour 3.
The pack: 1970 Fleer MLB Iron-ons
The cost now: $4
The cost then: 5 cents
What's inside this pack? Keep reading ...
Cards per pack: one (a panel of three iron-ons)
Inserts: None
Autographs/Memorabilia: No chance
What's Buzz-worthy: This one sounded like an interesting rip given its age and its price -- and an interesting rip it was. Literally. The results? They're best seen in the slideshow -- my thoughts can be found there (click on the first image to open it). I guess this was a pack better left closed and that also explains its price considering its age. This is by far the oldest wax pack I have ever opened after collecting more more than 30 years and the results were memorably bad. Meanwhile, I'm glad I did it. (Go figure.) The product concept might have been ahead of its time, though. How big is the set? There should be at least 24 teams found in combinations as that's the number of MLB teams at the time. I'd have more details but I'm still trying to recover from the rip ... and readying myself for a rebound next hour.
Product Grade: B
Pack Grade: C
Fun Grade: F

- I should have stopped here.
- I should have stopped here. Again.
- You see an instructions panel first — a simple piece of cardboard.
- The other side of that is a sign of what’s to come.
- The iron-ons are printed on what is close to tissue paper and it’s folded in thirds.
- Pull that out and flip it over and you see a stick of gum from 1970.
- And separating them is not easy in some instances. This one was a failure.
- The Houston Astros’ logo took a hit.
- As did the St. Louis Cardinals.
- The Washington Senators were unharmed.
- I flipped over the iron-on and flipped the image in Photoshop so you could see how it would look on an item.
