1992 Classic Draft Picks Hockey Autographs (1) – Keith Jones

What's Buzz-worthy: The times have changed a lot since this type of product created waves in the hobby, but I'd argue that the explosion of draft picks sets in this timeframe helped shape the hobby today quite a bit. This was a retail version of the Classic staple -- a multi-sport draft picks and pros set -- and this one was expanded to include NASCAR drivers atop baseball, football, basketball and hockey draft picks. Unfortunately this retail box -- one I remember ripping from KB Toys stores -- didn't include an auto from the product, but instead a leftover past Classic auto of an NHL player who played 10 seasons. Not what I bought it for. A number of those big names in the base set are signers here -- Vladimir Guerrero's first autograph, using complete letters among them -- and there are some real gems possible thanks to the number of players Classic had in its stable at that time. Barry Bonds, Bartolo Colon, Kerry Collins, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Kidd, Alonzo Mounting and Shaquille O'Neal are just some of the names here. If you were around as a collector 20-some years ago, this might be a fun one to revisit if you can find it on the cheap. I might try one more if I can find it at this price again, just for the chase. In some cases it can pay off well -- in most you'll probably find ink and cards from guys who might be more miss than hit. That's how prospecting was back in the day beyond the typical Rookie Cards in standard products.
