MLB Authenticated game-used baseball (1) – Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees, June 21, 2017 -- Jordan Montgomery vs. Cameron Maybin
What's Buzz-worthy: This one was a pleasant surprise in a blind-box buy as it's a ball pitched by Yankees rookie Jordan Montgomery against Cameron Maybin for six pitches. This was his 13th career start, seventh at Yankee Stadium, and he won the game to up his record to 5-4 on the year as the Yankees won 8-4. You can see the pitch details in the gallery below. Something else that makes this one a little more interesting? Maybin was the first batter he faced that day, making this the first of many baseballs used by the Yankees rookie in the game that day. It was taken out of play after Maybin fouled it off on the sixth pitch. (He walked on the next pitch with a new ball.) I'm not sure I'd expect to find a ball used by Mike Trout, Albert Pujols or Shohei Ohtani in a blind box -- those command definite premiums -- but this ball was an interesting surprise in that it was also Steiner stickered. You'd think that Yankees balls also would command a premium -- at least vs. other teams -- so this ball from a rookie and a veteran who finished the year with a World Series ring (on a different team) feels like a decent find without a premium price paid. I'll be trying out some of these boxes for other teams from time to time and work them into the Buzz Break and Buzz 12 in 12 lineups -- so keep an eye for them if game-used baseballs are your thing.
