What's Buzz-worthy: This is a landmark set that's arguably the rarest of the three main NFL sets from 1989 -- a year that changed the collecting world when it came to football cards with the arrival of Score and Pro Set and color photos on card backs along with bright white stock and so much more ... like freshly drafted players in the set. I managed to find this pack in a bulk lot of junk wax -- not a term I throw around lightly as they were pretty bad -- but the lot was basically lower than the price of what this pack would have cost me and it included plenty more. The slightly dinged corners here were a bummer but could have been far worse given the baggies that Score called wrappers back in the day. This pack was worth it for its pocket-change cost (less than that price tag), though, with the Rookie Card of a Hall of Famer (Carter) and a number of notables from the time, including the first NFL player Buzz ever met -- Hall of Famer Mike Singletary. You can see everything from the pack in the gallery. ... As I said the last time I ripped one of these packs (when I paid $10), this one is arguably the pinnacle of standard Score football while in its inaugural season -- at least in the pre-hits era -- with a crop of RCs that also includes Michael Irvin, Tim Brown, Rod Woodson, Thurman Thomas, Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Troy Aikman and Derrick Thomas. ... I'd argue that Pro Set was arguably bigger in its overall impact being more accessible that year, but the scarcity of Score made it the money set of the day -- and still now if you're talking standard RCs. Would I rip more of these? Maybe, though the factory sets have seemingly gotten a little cheaper in the last few years as its tough for even classics like these to compete with the big mojo hits of today's NFL cardboard. Your best bet might be to land everything from a clean factory set -- there are literally no inserts other than the trivia cards.
