What's Buzz-worthy: "I probably could have done better, I probably could have done worse." That was the first thing in my head when I opened the package and saw my autograph atop this first of six sets for a $199 membership. The base set, which feels like a late-1960s or early 1970s creation printed on retro Heritage-style stock, starts off strong with some of MLB's biggest names and then big rookies from this past season. Then it falls back to some New York names (too many?) among a crop of younger veterans and then back to some rookies and then five retirees -- Hall of Famers, maybe Hall of Famers and another Met. (Four Mets, four Yankees in 25 cards -- checklist below.) The packaging on this one is simple -- a slider case for the a set, a snap case for the auto all wrapped in a ball of bubble wrap but without any other type of packaging or info inside a padded envelope. (There won't likely be a lot of mystery flipping of sets with that.) There was no other introductory info or message with this first release, which ultimately left the $1,000 Brooklyn Collection offer (one that I didn't take up) as a defacto introductory message of sorts for members. Not sure if that works for me or not, but first impressions could lead me toward more interest right now. It feels a bit flat for a starting point -- but that means there's more room to impress with more stuff to come later. Look for more from the Club right here in the coming year.
