What's Buzz-worthy: Triple Threads has had a long run helping define high-end for Topps for a number of years but times have changed and the brand isn't necessarily atop that price chart. The difference with this release? This might be the best creation and execution of Triple Threads in its 12-year history. The base set (click the Wagner above for a closer look) has a clean and colorful but not overwhelming matte look along the elegant lines of modern-day currency (without any visual cliches) with a strong and refined use of foil stamping that isn't always easy. The cutting here? Flawless -- and that's been an issue for many thick-stock releases in the hobby. The basic set is small at 100 cards but there are a number of parallels that draw extra flash to a clean design with past and present stars included. The hits formula in this release is similar to past years but this box had a good mix of past and present punch -- a Hall of Famer and an MVP of the past along with a guy who might pick up some hardware tomorrow and a younger guy on a popular team. The base cards here were a little Yankees-heavy but they look good so I couldn't hate that. There are huge finds possible in this brand -- true jaw-droppers -- but you won't see them in every box or case. That's not always easy to swallow at its price point, but you're partly paying for a shot at some legendary cardboard. This year's set is stacked with stars and cool creations -- and with a strong rookie class this will be an edition that could be strong for a long time. The base set here makes me think "instant classic" and it's not like this brand has been bad in recent years -- it just needed some extra design touches. Those arrived this year.
