Original SportKings artwork (1) – Wilt Chamberlain (1/1)

What's Buzz-worthy: Last year, Blowout bought the run of original artwork used to make past SportKings trading cards and this blind-wrapped release includes one one-of-a-kind piece showing stars from throughout the sports universe -- not just the Big Four sports -- as they appeared on SK cardboard. I finally bit on one of these after months of intending and promising to do so with last weekend's 10-percent-off flash sale, and I landed an interesting piece. It's of former Los Angeles Lakers legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain -- an all-time great who once scored a record 100 points in a single game. This piece also might be a slight oddity here as its noted as "Misc." on its info sheet -- so it was either used on an insert card or perhaps not at all, which is not the norm here. (I actually couldn't find it on any cards but it's possible.) On others to be found here, the card number for whatever release it appeared on is in the crown on the sheet that backs the piece in the 8.5-by-11 top-loader. The artist for nearly all of these pieces (if not all) is Paul Madden -- you can hear a little bit from him here -- and he signed the backs of most of them, too. Every box of this one includes a one-of-a-kind piece -- a ton of legends you definitely know and then some you might not who were giants in their fields such as Olympians and stars in European sports where their cards can be cool history lessons. The box front up top offers a teaser of a few -- as does the preview story link -- and I was actually lucky enough to land one of those stars that we originally teased when this one was first in the works. Willie Shoemaker (horse racing), Nadia Comaneci (gymnastics), Michael Phelps (swimming) are in here alongside the likes of LeBron James, Ric Flair, Ken Griffey Jr., Joe Namath, Joe Montana, Mario Lemieux and Barry Sanders for starters. There actually are top-tier stars with multiple pieces, too, so there's likely another Chamberlain up for grabs, too, but from different times in his career. If you like dabbling with artwork, these are a no-brainer. They could make nice displays matted alongside the cards or cut autos and if you land a top name like some of those mentioned or perhaps this one, then you have a pretty good shot at coming out ahead as a seller as there are undoubtedly some player collectors out there who would want their star's originals.
