What's Buzz-worthy: The Alliance of American Football might leave some people scratching their heads when it comes to cardboard, but consider this ... a 175-card base set of this one has sold for $49.95 -- more than once -- on eBay. (Just the base cards.) And those hobby boxes at the link above? They're typically dishing out four on-card autographs per box instead of the advertised three. At retail, this box over-delivered based on the posted odds with both an autograph (one in 21 packs) and a Red parallel (one in 26) with the only statistically guaranteed cards being the Future Stars inserts just once per box per the odds. (This one had two.) I've seen a number of people ponder publicly what the appeal is here and, to me, it comes down to two things -- the local/regional fan bases who can watch their players and the college collecting crowd who gets another shot at names they may know but may have never had cardboard for before. My box included an auto for the son of Hall of Famer Phil Simms and he had ink during his brief NFL run in 2013-14 but not much since. The autograph checklist here is very, very deep and it includes a number of non-player autos that I'd expect could be in a lot more demand than you might think. My local stop only received three blasters in the first wave of release, so the blaster run may not be as meaty as you might expect. With so many autos this could be a sleeper release in the future simply because you never know where these athletes might end up and college football collectors can be a dedicated bunch for guys you don't see on cardboard elsewhere.
