What's Buzz-worthy: Here's a first for my years in the hobby ... opening a new box after a league has folded. The Alliance of American Football is toast but the cardboard is forever -- and it was one that surprised early on. As said in my blaster break, a 175-card base set of this one sold for $49.95 -- more than once -- on eBay. (Just the base cards.) Meanwhile, hobby boxes have at times dished out four on-card autographs per box instead of the advertised three. It's not the flashiest break -- a ton of base and not a lot of everything else except autos -- but one in-demand name could pay for a food chunk of a box. I've seen a number of people ponder publicly what the appeal is here and, to me, it comes down to two things -- the local/regional fan bases who can watch their players and the college collecting crowd who gets another shot at names they may know but may have never had cardboard for before. The autograph checklist here is very, very deep and it includes a number of non-player autos that I'd expect could be in a lot more demand than you might think. With so many autos this could be a sleeper release in the future simply because you never know where these athletes might end up and college football collectors can be a dedicated bunch for guys you don't see on cardboard elsewhere. Could there be some added interest over time since the league fell apart so quickly? Maybe.
