NXT Takeover: Chicago Mat Relics (1) – Ricochet

What's Buzz-worthy: The format change for the Topps WWE flagship set is one that breaks down the basic stuff by the TV brands and this first one is for the main show, Raw. The design is a bit more than the full-bleed feel we got last year -- it may work better for some, less for others and I'm still kind of on the fence whether I like it or not. Also complicating things for the later Smackdown release will be the fact that stars will be changing shows beginning next week as part of a planned re-drafting of the rosters. This set includes stars from this show as well as others who have been part of the show for years but aren't currently active on a weekly basis. Atop that, the stars of 205 Live also get a base set presence here. While that show doesn't interest me at all - at all -- this change does mean there are no NXT cards among what you get most of (base), though you will have a presence in the hits. The hit here was a good name as Ricochet has arrived (on Raw and Smackdown) and put on a show lately. The other highlight here -- at least statistically -- is the Blue parallel that's found one in 78 packs. The overall offerings here are perhaps a little more advanced than recent years though the Legends insert really feels just like base cards. The design does lock the photos into a certain type of image that can get repetitive but ultimately this one is about the hits and key stars' cards. If you rip hobby -- your best bet here so hit that link -- you're guaranteed an autograph in every box.
