What's Buzz-worthy: This is the first time I've ripped into one of these -- from about three boxes if I remember correctly -- and not landed a hit. Since I was 2-for-2 before this, it was a bit of a surprise but beyond that it was a box that was basically right on par with the others. As I said last time, the volume of variety here and inserts -- almost a third of the box -- make this one a run rip with easy-to-spot variations and plenty of parallels being part of the charm here. On a base set variation, the rarer versions have a red Donruss logo on the back and on the retro cards the backs are flipped around with a black baseball for the card number instead of white. Those include a mix of nicknames, full names, alternate team notations (on backs) and photo swaps -- and they can also be found as parallels. ... This box included a few key names among the rookies as well as stars from the past and present that give it a good feel. ... This one's design seems like an improvement over last year with a cleaner and slicker look that lets the photos and the various features carry the way here. The Diamond Kings and Retro cards are 1986-style here (a plus, though the color is somewhere in between the Diamond Kings and the rookies if you ask me). Meanwhile, blasters are the home of Rapture (sparkly) inserts and Holo Purple (foilboard) parallels only found here. From a collector perspective, there's a lot to chase -- and hobby boxes (hit that link up top) will deliver a lot more with ink guaranteed, too. I didn't do as much of this one last year (the design got me) but this year's is one where I'll likely dabble more.
