What's Buzz-worthy: It's been more than a year since I ripped into these packs -- you can see the 2019 results here -- but since the artist recently reloaded this year's packs (after a January sell-out I missed) you see some new ones here. First, some background ... Gummy Arts are the near-daily drawings of 40-something Chicago-based writer, editor and artist Mike Noren who has been at it with his creations in this style for several years now. The Gummy Arts Twitter and Instagram feeds are full of timely subjects revisited as pieces that are childlike but also clearly masterful in their whimsical takes on both sports stars but icons in entertainment -- mostly on hand-drawn Topps card designs of the past.  (I spotted a couple of Donruss cards in this year's packs.) A pair of Neils led things off in my packs here with highlights in my mind being those two (Armstrong and Young) as well as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Eddie Guerrero, Frank Robinson, Jushin Liger (1989 Donruss Rated Rookie!), Ivan Drago and Michael Bolton ... you know, Michael Bolton from Office Space. (He's clearly quite the slugger.)

There are so many classics to be found in these packs -- they aren't the cheapest option out there for a pack -- but eBay results might surprise you and they can be money-makers at $5-6 per card in a lot of instances and sometimes a lot more. A set sold for $299, too. I didn't buy them for the cash -- I bought them for the comedy -- and there are a ton more here I'd want from Andre The Giant and Aretha Franklin to Mötley Crüe and H.I. McDunnough. The John McClane might be firmly atop my list ... or the Black Sabbath ... or Ted Williams ... or Yasiel Puig vs. the entire Pittsburgh Pirates roster in that infamous brawl. (There are a few, actually, but ... Die Hard wins.) Just like last year, the printing here is solid -- the cards look even more detailed in hand vs. on-screen and they are all made with their edges and corners being hand-cut to go along with their aged looks. Gummy has a strong following with more than 10,000 people between the two mentioned accounts -- up from 6,500 when I ripped last year.
