Royal Rumble 2020 Table Relic (1) – Roman Reigns

What's Buzz-worthy: With standard WWE wax drying up seemingly in every direction (and singles prices not necessarily on the rise), curiosity got me to try something off the U.S. radar with some really good but some really bad results all at the same time. This is a Topps UK on-demand style release (the tin format at least) presenting a jumbo pack of the gaming cards made only for the European markets that also include a bonus pack and a one-in-four shot at a memorabilia card -- and that's what got me to look here given the limited nature of the release. The cost for the item? A mere £10, which is just over $13 at current exchange rates. So with four of these, one other small tin and shipping (not that cheap) my order was almost $100 -- and it still got here faster than some of the USPS stuff I have sitting out there in limbo. Go figure.

Just 312 tins of this one were sold via Topps' UK site and (spoiler) I landed two of them with Relics. This is a unique one and teaser of something to come later this year as it has a piece of a broken table from Roman Reigns' match against King Corbin at the Royal Rumble. The overall feel of the inclusions? An A+ thanks to that and other cards. These are very striking with a definite 1980s pop vibe and slick new design. The F-caliber bummer here? The packaging in tandem with the thin stock and black edges on the fronts and backs. Yes, they are gaming cards -- so some out there won't care about condition and will just play them -- but the jumbo card pack literally bounces around the tin (and one smaller different tin I bought had the same issue). Nearly all of the cards have corner issues or spots on edges -- a big bummer -- and some are really bad. What's the easy fix for Topps? Cut the cards with rounded corners -- they are gaming -- or pad the tins ... or use a blob of adhesive goo in the bottom of the tin and lay the pack on it.

Why did I go here? Well, Slam Attax cards were only released in the U.S. for a couple years -- a decade ago -- and there are several subsequent UK releases that are the home to debut cards for young stars literally sometimes a year in advance of their U.S. cardboard. Stars like Charlotte Flair and Paige had their first in-pack cards here the year before they arrived in standard Topps packs. (There are others, those two came to mind first.) That is also the case here with some surprises. For example, Scarlett merely made her NXT debut on May 6 and is on her first card here. She's also not alone as there are others who don't yet have U.S. cards and are found here. (Sure, it's gaming ... not the same ... but still.) I like these enough I will undoubtedly track down a booster box to get some clean copies -- very few cards in the thick packs here (at least for mine) escaped damage. The Relic was loose in the tin but didn't suffer any substantial damage and the XL bonus cards were placed in an envelope inside the box -- they are impressive foilboard jumbo cards. The booster boxes, based on eBay, are not shrink-wrapped so you risk boxes being mixed, missing packs or missing their (rarer) hits but the basics here are good. Very good.
