What’s Buzz-worthy: I don't collect -- or really even rip -- much hockey as I just can't do it all but I found this absolute brick of cards in the bargain bin with some other late-arrival/recent-year NHL releases on the cheap so I bit since it had so much cardboard inside. The drawback? With the set build making stars one-per-pack SPs along with the rookies also one per pack, well, it was a pretty dull break for me with a lot of names I'm not super-familiar with on the base. (At under $10, I'll survive and I landed a few RCs that look to have a bit of demand here so I'm probably still ahead, too.) I've opened other years of this one so that approach wasn't unfamiliar but last time I did one I had a Gretzky appearance among the parallels (legends don't appear to have a spot as SPs in this set based on my super-quick glance) and the top rookie showed, too. This time? Probably not as strong. ... Just like last time, about the only names I truly recognized were among the veteran SPs ... that's more on me being an NHL dabbler on a very limited basis, though I've never been a big fan of loading up the best names for an SP portion of a set -- in any sport. This retail-only release is relatively simple and has a very modern MVP-style look and feel to it vs. a retro Parkhurst name but I still think it works on the cheap. The foilboard and the parallels definitely jump out from the packs here but the SPs and the RCs don't, really, so that's a drawback here to this dabbler. This box delivered on most of what's found here among inserts save for some serial-numbered cards and long-odds ink, which I wouldn't really expect to land ripping here ... but it's possible.
