What's Buzz-worthy: They say don't let the cover fool you with books -- and I think that thought applies here with the Padres brown boxes ... that just isn't the right feel here. This one feels like something from more-premium 1990s Fleer years with some touches of Pacific Trading Cards with some nods to stuff like Black, Crusade and Elite all rolled into one all on thick stock with heavy reflective holofoil and foil stamping with card backs also familiar if you have opened brands such as Leather & Lumber or Classics in past years. If the basic look here works for you it should all work for you -- I was more impressed than I thought I would be, actually, but I'm not as big with foilboard and flash ... but I think this one works. The other big plus here? It's got a guaranteed hit in every box without a premium price like many of the hitless box around it on the same retail shelves. This time? Ink from a decent rookie. The parallels here are perhaps a little too simplistic but I liked the inserts popping in every pack and color in every pack, too. Those things help. My player selection wasn't that great among the basics -- the 100 base cards and the 100 Luxury Suite cards atop that seem like there's a deep checklist here based on these names -- but the parallels I landed in this small sampler included Jeremy Pena and a pair of the rare Luxury Suite cards. (I didn't do more than one so I don't know if that's the norm or a better blaster.) My inserts definitely added the star power ... so that sold me here for the modest box price. I'll probably open more here in these smaller portions unless hobby boxes dip in the future. It's an interesting one.
