What's Buzz-worthy: I hadn't run into any of these out in the retail wild until this weekend and was presented with a tray -- so I grabbed two packs not knowing the cost -- but at their premium price ($15.98) and after opening, well, I should have passed. Why? Like the blasters, it's not that flashy of a per-pack mix to start with and half of the base cards here were dramatically miscut while one of the Red White & Blue parallels was running light on ink -- and that happened twice. Atop this, there were no basic RCs in this pack and more lesser names were found than notables across the board. A Green Prizm isn't the norm -- that made this one's insert total the same as a blaster -- but there's just not much here. At the higher price (albeit for perhaps a bigger pack than some Optic/Prizm packs) there was more sting to it ... but at least the rough cuts that I have seen seem to be cleaner. (Are these from a newer printed wave?) The centering was an issue in blasters, too, and it seems to be a challenge on a lot of everything here (good luck grading ... but it's do-able in some instances.) Are they 100-0 bad centering? No, but certainly off enough that there is not good eye appeal for a big chunk. This format adds the Red White & Blue parallels to help it a lot but I don't think it's enough at the price as base cards are still super-plentiful and cheap as singles more times than not. Greens are also a highlight here if you get one -- they're not guaranteed. ... This is a landmark release in that it's the debut of Rookie Cards for almost all of the NXT 2.0 stars (a small number snuck into a couple sets last year) and a number of NXT UK performers who didn't have cards, either, beyond it being a Panini first. Becuase of this, the RC volume is abnormally high as they are all in the base set. Previous releases used "First NXT card" labels and then RC logos once stars arrived on Raw or Smackdown or had those NXT debuts in insert sets. ... These carry a higher suggested retail price at retail than Prizm stuff of a few years ago (like all Prizm/Optic now) so that eats into things, too, if you're looking to flip and don't land something more notable. (That happened here.) This set has a deep 200-card checklist that's loaded with past, present and future stars so that can mean hot boxes or lean ones.
Product Grade: A- (a lot of off-centered cards and rough cuts for my taste in this landmark release -- holds it back from top marks)
Pack Grade: C- (Green not guaranteed ... at least the cuts were clean)
Fun Grade: C- (dramatically poor centering on half the base in a close-to-average pack)
