What's Buzz-worthy: Drew Maggi spent 13 seasons in the minor leagues before finally making his MLB debut on April 26 and the following day these $49.99 packs were made available by Topps along with a basic card (/1,397) and its parallels. The 189 packs sold out quickly and this one arrived just today well after his three-game MLB stint was over with a second Topps Now card (and parallels) the only other release. I took the shot as the pack price was reasonable (though still high for him) compared to, say, the NBA draft picks offered up last night. Why dabble? Since these are issued in pack form, there are parallels in play -- a base (/99) all the way down to a 1/1 ... all possible here all at the same price. Another reason why? Maggi didn't have any MLB-release prospect cards at all before this -- his only in-pack card was a Pro Debut MiLB card way back in 2011 -- and everything else is MiLB team set stuff. One more reason why? His story apparently has some Hollywood potential. There's probably some more cardboard to come to some degree at some point, of course, even if he's in the minors and hurt at the moment. How long might interest there last, though? I'm not sure. Unopened packs have sold on eBay for more than $100 -- so there's definitely still some interest here -- we'll see how things look once more packs are opened. If a movie arrives telling his basic story of chasing his dream and getting there, I suspect there might be more than 189 people interested in this one.
