What's Buzz-worthy: This was among a few surprises I spotted among the National offerings and I grabbed a handful of them with some strong results the second they popped up in the store (link above) as this one previews what looks to be an interesting release to come later this year. The details are still to come -- and really some here are, too -- but what I did know here is simple. It's a one-card pack with an encased preview card limited to no more than 10 serial-numbered copies ... every time. In play are a ton of colors and textures -- and one box I saw opened had seven 1/1 cards as well as a 1/1 auto so there's a lot of rare stuff to be found here as Wild Card enters the pop culture realm. Ink here is one per box but with this approach the boxes aren't the cheapest option -- but Buzz is quite tempted. The lineup here includes standard card proofs, autographed card proofs (big blank white box where ink goes) and then some signed versions, some apparently rarer sketch cards and then other proofs. (Teasers noted pre-production and production cards ... so perhaps some names here won't make the formal release later.) Now, who's in there? Well, the company is teasing a decades pack approach -- 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s -- but I've also seen finds up to the here and now ... as in names in the headlines just last month. Some of the 50-plus notables here on the checklist include Clint Eastwood, Priscilla Presley, Al Pacino, Charlie Sheen, Chevy Chase, Chuck Norris, Geena Davis, Molly Ringwald, Ric Flair, Carmen Electra, Marisa Tomei, Uma Thurman, Adam Driver, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gisele Bundchen, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Sean Astin and Zoë Saldaña for starters. (There are names who haven't had much cardboard in there and among the others I didn't mention, too.) These are cleanly and crisply printed on what looks to be chrome or plastic stock with a lot of colorful, flashy looks and a few different cards/images for some subjects, too. Wild Card opened these with a relatively modest show price -- let's hope the final release is in that ballpark or tries a similar approach with a deep, varied checklist -- and if that comes to fruition with some strong past and present players in pop culture this just might end up being one of the better releases of the year and one of the strongest releases Wild Card has done, too. You'll see more of this one for Buzz Breaks as well as some singles pick-ups in Buzz Buys ... they've been on my radar already. If I could swing a box to chase some ink right now, I would ... save one for me!
