What's Buzz-worthy: It's been more than a year since I opened some standard Bowman, so a new year's release means, well, here's my one blaster. The look and feel is in the wheelhouse -- no real surprises there -- while the insert lineup here includes a little more variety vs. past years. (Fewer of the sets we see seemingly every year, with sone new looks in there, too.) The base set, base prospects and Chrome prospects formula is still in play, of course, and this box broke down almost exactly like last year's and it was a pretty standard break until I landed both serial-numbered cards in the same pack followed by a Jac Caglianone Chrome (though his debut was in Draft last year) and then some other good rookie names to find on inserts and base.To top that off, Bichette is perhaps my top everyday veteran I collect so the box gets an A, though it still didn't really wow me. Why? They still need to amp these up more -- yes, more -- since it's so reliant on base-like cards and parallels. Odds-wise, the Bichette is one in 356 packs and the Blue Shimmer is one in 450 ... how did they land in the same pack and, really, should parallels truly be that tough to find if numbered? Should stuff like these cards be one per two cases and one per three cases? Nah, and the simple answer here should be add more stuff and ensure the collation isn't wonky ... make all boxes stronger and more people will buy more than one. Or, as I said last year, make more variety, cough up more ... a larger set would still help balance it all out, too. ... Retail is the home of some exclusive Green parallels and can include autographs, too, but I wouldn't expect even numbered cards in every blaster. I think that would entice more rippers if they did -- or at least something that stands out as different from the rest of the box. There are a lot of long-odds cards that are interesting in this one -- and they're long in hobby boxes, too -- but perhaps tiering some of those rarities into an easy group and a tough group might make for better box to box finds that people can, you know, collect.
Product Grade: B+
Box Grade: A (two rarer parallels in same pack ... that aren't even statistically supposed to be found one per case)
Fun Grade: B+
