The box: Fanatics Texas Rangers game-used baseball mystery box
The cost: $39.95
What's inside this box? Keep reading ...
Autographs/Memorabilia: 1
Game-used baseball (MLB Authenticated): Seattle Mariners vs. Texas Rangers, Sept. 19, 2015
The matchup: Rangers SP Cole Hamels vs. Mariners LF Franklin Gutierrez
The result: One swinging strike, one called strike and a curveball bounced in the dirt (sixth inning)
What's Buzz-worthy: Remember when the Texas Rangers picked up this All-Star and former World Series MVP and he was unbeatable down the stretch? This game was part of that prime time -- his fourth win for the team overall and one of seven victories in nine starts to end the year. The life of this ball on the MLB Authentication cert is just one play but had it been one of the newer baseballs with all plays noted it would be noted for use during at least three pitches in an at-bat against Gutierrez -- two strikes with no contact and then this one that was an 80-mph curveball that bounced in the dirt in front of the plate. It was blocked by catcher Chris Gimenez who picked it up gave it a glance and threw it out of play. (See the amateurish GIF in the gallery below that I pulled together from game footage. Hey ... I thought it was cool.) This ball wasn't around for the next pitch -- one that resulted in Hamels' ninth strikeout of a strong 12-K day -- nor was it around earlier in the game when Gutierrez hit his 81st career home run to get the Mariners' lone run in a 10-1 loss. This win was Hamels' 118th career victory. It's a relatively clean ball -- it looks lightly prepped and far less dirty than others I've seen -- except for a nicely scuffed panel from when it hit the ground on its final play and some contact lines/scuffs on a different panel perhaps from hitting Gimenez's gear or the previous at-bat, which was a single by Robinson Cano. (It's possible that ball was taken out of play but video footage was inconclusive.)
