Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.
So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ... and this time around there's some traditional stuff and some odd stuff.
CHECK IT OUT ...
The Item: Pro Football Hall of Famer Deacon Jones autographed 1984 Warner Bros. payroll check
The Price: Less than a blaster box
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I haven't ever really dabbled with signed/canceled checks except for a few school ties names (Roll Tide!) who don't have a lot of stuff and where other items are pricey. One example? Former Yankees broadcaster Mel Allen ... a signed ball can be expensive but a signed check is still pricey but not as bad. In this case, I stumbled upon this check during a curiosity dive online and it seemed unique -- a Warner Bros. studio payroll check (pre-printed signatures on the front) made out to and signed by a Pro Football Hall of Famer on the back. The amount isn't massive, so I figured it was probably a royalty payment for some TV show appearance or movie re-run and he had a few in films and spots as himself on TV through the years. I wish I could figure it out, but IMDb only had an appearance on Super Bloopers and Practical Jokes in 1984 and an appearance on The Fall Guy in 1983 with other past projects also possible. (I didn't do a deep dive on figuring out who owned what for studio/network properties back then ... but it's probably do-able.) What do I know? This is something different compared to a lot of the stuff out there signed by "The Secretary of Defense."

MLB X GPK
The Card: Spencer Strider (aka "Bugged-out Billy") 2022 Topps MLB x Garbage Pail Kids Series 2 Rainbow Foil (/250)
The Price: $2.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The GPK sets that take on MLB stars have always caught my eye but basically I've only wanted to grab singles of a few names here and there as the volume of what the packs/boxes deliver in the worst-case scenario doesn't seem that enticing to me for the price. But that's not to say there's not some big stuff possible -- there is via parallels and some other chases -- and I like a lot here ... but a sure thing to me, for me, is to just buy singles. This parallel presented itself at a price to grab and I'd probably have slabbed it save for the little bit of edge funk up top. It's not damage I don't think ... it just looks to be a little extra or maybe a dull blade or slight pressure on foil from packaging. Either way, at this price, it was an easy grab.

ALL ABOUT THE SHOES
The Card: Chuck Taylor 2009-10 Panini Basketball Hall of Fame (/599)
The Price: About $2.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This Panini set is a loaded one with the base cards limited to only 599 copies and it has a checklist packed with notables in the Hall of Fame ... including ink. This former basketball player turned shoe salesman helped refine the specialized shoes that carry his name to this day (now made by Nike) and was named to the Hall as a contributor in 1969. (That's the quick version ... read more here.) I grabbed this since it's ultimately his only standard basketball card issued in pack form along with its two parallels.

POCKET-CHANGE PICK-UPS
The Cards: Bo Bichette 2023 Topps Chrome Titans
The Price: Under $1 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Since my in-year MLB pack-ripping was perhaps at an all-time low last year, I dabbled a little bit more here and there for cheap singles and, well, this one was so cheap and apparently so nice I bought it twice. It's a simple concept and the tower helps its execution here (sorta, I guess) but ultimately I did it (twice) since I dabble with Bichette stuff and it was better than some flagship parallel card. (That set is not aging well at all in my eyes.) There's been a solid push for adding super-rare chases to products (this ain't that) but with higher production volumes I think it might be time to make set checklists (on everything -- base and insert sets) dramatically larger where it all gets spread out even more within a product. That might help stuff like this from selling for less than stamps do and at the same time people might get a better return from a pricey box. That's just my two cents after two Titans.

TWO TO WATCH ...
The Cards: Mark Kerr 2023 Panini Prizm UFC Legendary Signatures Silver & 2023 Panini Chronicles UFC Signatures
The Price: About $21 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: My prices paid here were a little higher than probably my norm but there was a reason for some impulse buying for a former UFC fighter who doesn't have a lot of cardboard at all. Kerr's only cards are in these two Panini releases and in Donruss -- and two-thirds of his overall card count is the certified ink, meaning lots of parallels. The key here? His story that was first examined in a 2002 HBO documentary called The Smashing Machine (click for trailer) is being revisited as a drama from A24 Films and with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portraying him and getting into the ring in a new way. It's set to arrive sometime next year.

IN THE FRONT ROW?
The Card: Jennifer Lopez 2022 Leaf Metal Pop Century Ticket to the Show
The Price: About $5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This encased cut card includes the prime panel of a concert ticket -- I like that concept -- but the risk of buying these single-card boxes was finding names inside that one just didn't connect with me (and maybe others) that well. (I did a break here ... at least I knew some their stuff but not a fan.) This one? Same, but this addition was more about the unique kind of card at a super-cheap price with a notable name attached (but still not my musical wheelhouse at all). I also noticed the Row 1, Seat 1 part here and thought that meant something (trivially speaking) but, well, maybe not based on this venue view. This same approach has been done for sports tickets and some other types of items and I don't hate it. I just think a narrowed genre releases (rock, country, pop, etc.) would have helped it. Making something that's a little more commodified as cards out of something that's readily available on the cheap is a good idea to me. I think photo slides could easily be done next and have talked about that here a few times in the past and you'll see some slides later in this one.

TWO MEGS
The Cards: Meg White 2006 Jim Beam Music Playing Cards
The Price: Probably too much, but ...
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: ... I sprung on one of these to get it graded and then picked up another at less than half of my original price. Why? First, it's an oddly unique card -- The White Stripes' drummer has few if any cards -- and this comes from a Jim Beam branded deck ... a UK release I think based on box at right (click for a closer look). Second, I thought one of these might make for a quirky slabbed card ... but for whatever reason CGC kicked it back ungraded/unsupported. Why? I don't know. I didn't compare the two to see if one of my cards was obviously different (aka fake) but I suspect the set was just perhaps seen as not legit for whatever reason since the design is minimalist/funky. (They're all over eBay and SGC has slabbed some ... the reason I didn't grab a sealed deck is the shipping costs from the UK were higher than the decks themselves.) I still might chase one down ... and if I see stuff here getting slabbed then I might send one of these back in for grading again.

A PROOF BEFORE INK
The Card: Tara Reid 2023 Leaf Metal Pop Century Growing Up Graphs Pre-Production Proof Purple Wave (1/1)
The Price: $6
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This price for a 1/1 of a 2000s notable made this an easy grab -- I think newer names like this might gain more interest over time than those from previous generations with tons of cards. This encased card has its COA on the back inside the sealed top-loader -- so it's not as crisp of a presentation as past years -- but that's OK for what it is. Prices here are soft at times as there are a lot of colors/textures but they're all the only proof made for each of the cards in this release. Pop Century stuff is always worth a look for a collector.

FROM JAPAN TO AEW
The Card: Mariah May 2023 Stardom x WebPon Clear Card
The Price: About $18
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This appears to be the only Stardom wrestling card for this 25-year-old British star who worked in Japan in 2023 and is in AEW now. I grabbed one of these awhile back when they started popping up and just after she arrived in AEW, but I didn't even know what the story was with this card or even what it might officially be called. I enlisted Joshi City to help unravel the mystery some and its origin can be seen here. These clear plastic cards appeared to come along with or in the same series as with a standup plastic figure and a small pennant for each star. So far, for her AEW days, May only has an online-released card with parallels. I don't think she has much (if any) indy cardboard, either.

A FLASHY TRIO
The Cards: Chris Boucher 2022-23 Panini Prizm Premium Set (/150), 2021-22 Panini Donruss Holo Light Blue Laser (/60), 2020-21 Panini Flux Cracked Ice Prizm
The Price: About $2.50 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This guy's school ties to me get him here -- dig in the archives, I've probably told the story too many times at this point -- and this time it's some serial-numbered flash and factory set parallel action that ties them together. (That and being dirt cheap.) Of the three, I think the Donruss card is the winner with the backboard camera shot and the texture being perfectly centered. I think I have one of the parallels of that one slabbed and there's a chance I might grade this one just for fun ... though it's not a high-priority card. Why? Collecting.

THE CHAMP'S INK IS HERE (AGAIN)
The Item: Tiffany Stratton autographed NXT champ 8-by-10 photo
The Price: About $40
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This Smackdown star is finally signing more for Panini America and for WWE Shop, so the earlier ink like this that was done via independent dealers/show promoters will probably slow down among my additions ... but this photo got the win as it was among the first I found of her with the NXT title. There will be more to come for her when it comes to titles -- my money says this year -- and there are already other autographed photos in my stash awaiting a spot here in future months. It's Tiffy Time and when the prices are right I'm buying.

FOUR MEM CARDS
The Cards: Nick Swisher 2011 Topps Allen & Ginter Framed Mini Relic, 2007 Bowman Heritage Pieces of Greatness Black (/52), 2014 Panini Immaculate Collection Diamond Fabric (/99) & Immaculate Hitters (/79)
The Price: About $10 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: My main player hasn't had any new cards in years, so I dabble with what I can find from the last and when it's numbered stuff or favorite brands like this and this cheap they're n0-brainers. How many did I already have? Doesn't matter ... I'll take 'em.

SLIDING INTO MY COLLECTION
The Card: Arnold Schwarzenegger assorted Celebrity Photo Agency slides (with cameos from Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, James Cameron, Maria Shriver and Jamie Lee Curtis)
The Price: Pocket change apiece via bulk lots
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is another A-list name of the past that I found in pretty good volume while picking off a few larger-sized lots of celebrity slides. What does one do with 'em? Sort 'em and page 'em up just like cards, though I have had some other ideas for things, too. Pick a 1980s/1990s name and do a slide search on eBay ... you might find some interesting stuff. The digital revolution has made these obsolete in more recent decades with services all being based on downloads and not physical slides.

EARLY TREK CARDBOARD
The Cards: Tom Hardy 2002 Rittenhouse Star Trek: Nemesis Quotable Star Trek & Sarah Silverman 2012 Rittenhouse The Quotable Star Trek: Voyager and 1998 Skybox Star Trek: Voyager Profiles
The Price: About $7.50 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: My price here seems a little high looking back, but this pair of appearances in Trek sets is just another example where one might find early cards or some of the only cards for names known in other places. I think this matters more with autographs and memorabilia cards but dabbling with early cards of notables still might be overlooked for non-sports. I only found these Hardy cards doing some deep dives of names I thought might be of interest on cardboard, while the Silvermans are perhaps me competing a run of what she has. (I think ... it's just some casual dabbling and she doesn't have much.)

A PREMIUM-BRAND PARALLEL
The Card: Cactus Jack 2022 Panini Impeccable WWE Holo Silver (/25)
The Price: $4
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This set's design is a funky one -- that secondary image being the same as the front one often can look just plain weird -- but the angles of the pose vs. the striping here seemed to work for me and that's how this card from a premium brand came into my collection. What worked even better? Landing a rarer parallel of a Hall of Famer for that price.

SOME EARLY INK
The Cards: Skye Blue 2024 Pro Wrestling Junkie base card and autograph (/50)
The Price: $40
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This indy card-maker's creations have been a thing for a few years now with wrestlers signing on as it's another payday (to sign) and a new line of merch to sell if they choose to, too. I've picked off one or two for names I like in the past but this one was an instant buy when it was mentioned. Why? She's an AEW regular now and while she was a signing guest at The National last year she hadn't had any certified autos -- or really that much cardboard -- until more recent releases thanks to delays of products. Generally, she doesn't have that much cardboard as it is with her career beginning in late-2020. There will be more to come, of course, but right now her only in-pack autos are from Allure ... I went for the affordable sure-thing auto with an on-card sig instead.

A SIX-PACK OF ATTACK
The Cards: Dave Bautista as Mr. Hinx 2020 UD James Bond Villains & Henchmen Acetate (five) & Red
The Price: Pocket change on all ... maybe $2 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This former WWE star might be the best grappler turned actor -- not just movie star -- as he's worked on more than just action films. He's got wrestling cards, he's got Marvel cards (Drax) and he's got Bond cards, too, as this villain is among his credits. Also in there and on cardboard? A spot in Dune. I picked up these with maybe a thought for a slab but the regular cardboard can have issues with all that color and then the acetate versions can have funky surfaces. The cost was close to nothing so no worries ... I'll keep looking for others options.

THE NEW LOOK
The Card: Shotzi Blackheart 2023 Panini Impeccable WWE (/99)
The Price: $12
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This WWE star's trademark long green locks are gone for this card but they're coming back as she's out with an injury but still regularly online. What's the deal? Ahe cut her hair as part of a promo that was a nod to her sister who did the same battling cancer. This is her first card with the new look ... but before she added spikes. I think we'll see more of this as more delayed WWE cards start arriving.

A 1990s THROWBACK
The Items: Spice World (1997) press kit promotional photo lot of 11 8-by-10s
The Price: $9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This group wasn't on my radar at all back then -- just not into pop -- but MTV Classic is on high-rotation often as I work and more than one playing of a few Spicey videos got me to look and see what was out there. This relatively meaty set presented itself with a good price, especially for a clean, unused set to promote their film so I bit. There was plenty of merch for them back then including stickers, postcards and other card-like sets but most of them cost more than this.

GOING FOR THE GOLD
The Card: Max Fried 2020 Topps Heritage Clubhouse Collection Relics Gold (/99)
The Price: $3.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This parallel of a Relic was modestly priced, so I grabbed it for not much more than a regular version (an easier find) would cost. Most years' Heritage Relics are a bit funky but I like this one in either standard or parallel form ... I need to scout these sets more given prices.

"... NOTHIN' BUT THE TIDE"
The Card: Roll Tide Willie 2024 Leaf Metal Autograph (/280)
The Price: $19.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This eccentric superfan is one part country, one part influencer, one part mascot, one part viral recruiter and (probably) one part beer (OK, maybe two), but there's no doubt that there's only one focus ... Alabama Crimson Tide football. I'll admit I didn't know the name before the cardboard recently arrived online from Leaf, but I bit since it was cheap and unique ... and he's apparently got a following that has him on a number of fans' radars as well as shows. The cheapest actual sale for one of these was for more than double the original cost and then with a high of $130. Why? There are just not that many made ... and it's his only card.

SIX MORE SLIDES FOR THE STASH
The Items: Drew Barrymore (with Hole's Courtney Love & Eric Erlandson)
The Price: Too much ... but I'm a focused collector or something
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This six pack of Barrymore comes from one movie premiere (I think one slide is mis-labeled) where an iconic look was showcased and then from one other event from the past. I picked off a number of these previously and decided to pick off more (these are perhaps the lesser frames) but I figured I'd add to the page in my stash for a star that I collect in a few ways. I can't collect it all and wouldn't necessarily want to, but this run of tiny little time capsules was one I liked.

POCKET-CHANGE PICK-UPS
The Cards: Jim Halpert, Pam Beesly, Dwight Schrute & Michael Scott 2020 Mattel The Office Uno cards
The Price: About $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I should have just gone on the hunt for a sealed deck out in the retail wild, but instead I went the singles route on the cheap here with maybe some gimmick slabs in mind. Why? Well, I don't think there are many -- any? -- cards for The Office. There are some other games with card elements but no traditional trading cards. Meanwhile, each of these characters has four colors in a deck (parallels!) but I just grabbed matching colors for a couple of duos. I think playing cards/games can at times be an easy break/flip and/or grade scenario as, well, they're findable, affordable, unique and probably more obscure than a lot of the heavily produced stuff right now that's traditional fodder. Over time, stuff like this (not necessarily this one but stuff just like it) could get tougher to find and have more interest. (Maybe.) As it is, I also like the feel of these vs. even a lot of other Uno decks.

TWO PROMOTIONAL APPROACHES
The Items: Charlie's Angels (2000) French promotional booklet and press kit with 11 promotional 8-by-10 photos (appearances by Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, Bill Murray and McG)
The Price: About $24 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This pair of past pick-ups show how stuff is handled here vs. there -- "there" being France where a small magazine-sized presentation includes the info and the photos. Meanwhile, American media get quick-scan printed info and images to use as needed for their stories back then. (Granted the booklet might also be for non-media use and the full kits could still go to France, too.) Either way, I liked these pick-ups for the price. A lot of times single photos from kits like this can sell for $10-20 if somebody wants them. Value on all stuff like this is supply vs. demand and then eye of the beholder. (Just like cards, you know ... there's just more supply there.)

BRITISH INVASION
The Cards: Spencer Strider 2022 Topps UK -- Rookie Cards
The Price: $3.70
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This RC is ultimately the same as flagship save for a flag on the front and probably the number and a minor label on the back but I grabbed them anyway. I picked them uo in the off-season -- or at least before he got hurt -- but I'll survive as it's just some low-cost dabbling.

ONE OF A KIND ...
The Card: Nick Swisher 2012 Topps Black Printing Plate (1/1)
The Price: $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This one isn't low-cost dabbling but it was an easy pick-up as a 1/1 for my player from back in the day. It's a little surprising that flagship printing plates still don't get as much love in new releases as they probably should. Why so I say that? They's spread out among a few formats and in a lot of packs -- and they've never been that easy ... more boxes made only spreads them all out even more.

DOS POR DIEZ!
The Items: Penta El Zero M autographed Republic of Lucha 8-by-10 promotional photos
The Price: $5 apiece
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This AEW star and co-owner of the California-based Republic of Lucha store signed promo photos for their store as did a few other stars. During their most-recent Black Friday sale, they were all up for grabs for just $5 so I bit on several. Most of my buys have already been seen here but my last two are still to come at some point -- before the next Black Friday, I promise. Why? This is just a reminder that it's always a good idea to keep an eye on celebs' side projects/websites for stuff like this if you're an autograph collector.

HIS TIME IS NOW ... BEFORE HIS RCs
The Card: Bo Bichette 2019 Topps Now (/1,892) -- pre-RC card
The Price: $2.24
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This Now card comes after his big-league debut and after plenty of prospect cardboard but also in advance of his Rookie Cards that didn't drop until the following year. This card seems like it should be of more interest than just a couple bucks -- whomever bought it paid even more than that -- and I can't help but wonder whether there should be more of a premium on the first "call-up" cards from Now. At the same time, are we still seeing how flipper-focused, pandemic-adjacent sets are aging? Maybe, maybe not ... this isn't the best example as it's still got a modestly sized print run from just before those times but I bet more and more of the cards with larger volumes made are becoming more and more volatile as time goes on. (That's how it normally goes for a lot of cards unless it's some mass-interest superstar.)

ROCKY WAS A READER!
The Mags: Three 1996-97 New Wave Wrestling issues ... all with a Rocky Maivia reading cameo on back covers
The Price: $9.99 each
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This trio of magazines are from what I'd say is a lesser title -- no offense, it's just not a WWE mag or Pro Wrestling Illustrated (I normally stick to those as a collector) -- but one thing that did catch my eye here was the run of slightly campy back cover photo montages that showed stars from all companies posing with copies of the magazine or wearing gear with its logo. Cheesy but I dig it -- and these three got my money as each of them showed a WWF newcomer named Rocky Maivia perusing the publication. Interestingly, all three of these are from before his first main front-cover appearance on any wrestling magazine of any kind (that was in Buzz Buys last time ... poke around in the archives).

A LIFE FOLLOWING FOOTBALL
The Card: Wallace Beery & Johnny Mack Brown in Billy The Kid -- 1931 Wills Cinema Stars Series 3
The Price: Under $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: No, Buzz isn't collecting old-timey Western cardboard or tobacco cards now -- this is just a card that was really cheap, looks good for its age (really good for its age) and shows a former college football player. Johnny Mack Brown was an Alabama Crimson Tide star and a Rose Bowl MVP in 1925 and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and after his playing days ended he signed a deal with MGM and appeared in a number of projects before mostly doing Westerns. There's a boatload to collect for many names in that realm if one wants to -- cards, photos, lobby cards, posters -- and there was even a Western comic book series for Brown. I only dabble with an item or two here and there from time to time to add to my school ties stash. I liked all of the detail in the image here for such a small card.

TOYING AROUND
The Figure: Cora Jade Mattel WWE Elite Series 107 -- first figure
The Price: Around $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I don't hunt the toy aisle like I used to -- a well-stocked Walmart just can't compete with the variety and surprises from a Toys R Us -- but a recent morning stop that was light in the card aisle led me to a check of the toys where I spotted this debut figure. I wasn't expecting it but I bit, despite a slight corner crunch (bottom left) and light issues on the other side, too. I figured at worst I'd let this one breathe if I ever found a better one. Injuries have derailed this popular NXT star a bit, so we'll see how it goes but a first figure is a first figure. I'll pick those up for names I like.

LACKIN' BLACK INK ...
The Card: Tom Glavine 1988 Topps -- Rookie Card
The Price: $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: You know the famous and pricey 1990 Topps Frank Thomas NNOF (no name on front) error, right? That's one where the black ink got obstructed on the printing plate and that led to ink not showing on the bottom half of the card. This? I'd seen it before on other cards, actually, and this mintier version of this slightly botched card got me to bite for a buck. It's got the same issue as ol' Frank ... the black is missing or light down the bottom left of this one on the border box and especially on the bottom with his name and the Topps logo. It's all got some missing ink also on the right border. It's definitely the same issue as the Thomas but just not as dramatic. Is it a bonafide variant? I think it is -- at least as much as the Thomas is. One really has to wonder if any copies of this card exist with even worse ink flow in the bottom half. I have seen (and own) others with it deteriorating ... but not as badly as this one. The logo and the name are the key spots.

THREE OF A KIND
The Cards: Saraya 2022 UD AEW New Arrivals & Silver parallel, 2022 UD AEW Match Dated Moments (five copies)
The Price: About $8 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This star's surprise return moment (in the pink jacket ... watch it here) was a bonafide shocker and it's still one of my favorite things in all of wrestling the last few years. She was forced to retire in 2017 at age 25 after she had had neck surgery and made a comeback only to be seriously injured again. After all those years off, though, things apparently looked good enough to make a comeback and it happened ... as a massive surprise moment. (Poke around in the archives, I've written about it a few times before as I've collected her for a decade now.) The Arrivals card is a favorite for sure but they're lightly glossed cards so grading is a challenge there -- I've bought plenty of cheap copies but come up short finding one I think could be a top-grade contender -- while the Dated card is the same but I think I've found some 10-caliber copies but just haven't gotten around to slabbing yet. You'll see more of Saraya here, though, and I have a feeling some big storylines are perhaps set to come this year, too.
