Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

--

DOGPOOL'S DEBUT
The Book: Prelude To Deadpool Corps No. 3 -- first Dogpool appearance
The Price: Under $8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was an impulse/curiosity buy once I saw Dogpool -- a character that I'm admittedly not that familiar with -- on this cover of Empire in advance of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie to come as well as in a preview trailer. Why? Well, one reason I grabbed this was that the lone graded copy of this book on eBay at that time had an asking price of $400-plus. While I know that's high, you never know what people might grab if the that pup steals the show or at least picks up some headlines alongside Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds when this one hits. (Weird thing have happened with Baby Yoda and Star Wars' Porgs in recent years.) This comic cover isn't exactly the same as what we're getting on the big screen dog-wise, but with the movie figuring to generate a lot of buzz and perhaps include a lot of cameos I've been looking at stuff here and there ... and I really need to go find that magazine, too. It's actually got higher asking prices on eBay than this book and has sold for more than $20. (It's a UK mag ... so it's perhaps not as easily found just yet.) The comic has had CGC 9.8 sales of $85 and $299 in recent months, too, so there's definitely some speculating ... and there should be. This movie will be huge.

NO, NOT KOBE ... HIS DAD!
The Card:
Joe Bryant 2021-22 Panini National Treasures Retro Materials (/99)
The Price:
Around $8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is Kobe Bryant's dad and odds are you have not seen him on a lot of NBA cards because he simply doesn't have that many -- roughly a dozen. Most of his stuff is oddball/food issue from his playing days before he showed up in the last two sets from the original Topps run (1980-81 and 1981-82). Panini got in the game with a handful of appearances in more recent years and this is his only memorabilia card along with its parallels -- just 125 total cards across all three versions -- to go with his zero certified autos. (That's how little cardboard he has.) Bryant appears on just a couple cards with Kobe (one Topps, one Panini), so those would probably be of more interest to more people ... but this one was too cheap to pass up given the numbers and how unique it is.

TWICE AS NICE
The Cards:
Spencer Strider 2023 Topps Flagship Collection
The Price:
Under $5 total (and that seems high now)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These cards were only found in packs from Flagship Collection boxes at Costco, so it's a limited kind of release but not one with a boatload of value (yet) since it's a relatively small set (100 cards) in those packages. I picked off these with perhaps an eye on grading one but with his injury that idea has been shelved with priorities now elsewhere ... still like the looks of these, though.  I think the parallels of this one will be the winners in the long term -- Green (/99), Blue (/50), Red (/10) and 1/1 Platinum -- with those cards being spread out a lot more.

A CHEAP SAMPLER
The Card: Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer 2022 UD Marvel Allure Black Rainbow
The Price: Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This pick-up was one-part test to see if I like these in-hand before grabbing and grading some -- I think I do -- but also partly because it was a parallel listed as a base card. Beyond that, what I like here is the added info of the actors' names atop the characters on the cards ... it's a little thing, but it's a thing I like a lot as that's not the norm. This set is deep -- there are cards of good names who don't even have a lot of character card appearances let alone cards using their names. I want to find some packs of this one, too, but I think I missed the retail waves or just overlooked this one. It's happened at times in recent years between flippers clearing shelves and late arrivals.

DIAMOND KING
The Cards:
Ichiro Suzuki 1994 Nissan Ichiro Suzuki Playing Cards
The Price:
About $2 apiece
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Playing cards have been on my radar a bit this year -- not as decks but as singles to perhaps add some obscure novelty slabs on the cheap -- and this Japanese card got my attention with low prices. They're from pretty early in his Japanese career with the Orix Blue Wave and while a king of diamonds might be the best one to pull out of a deck I avoided face-card "premiums" and did a little run here as a nod to his career hit total. I added a couple more along with the front card to make a secondary stat but I admittedly can't remember what it was actually was ... it's been a bit since I grabbed all these 30-year-old cards.

GREAT GOODWINS
The Cards:
Bryce Young, Kahili Blundell & Natalie Alyn Lind 2022 UD Goodwin Champions Playing Cards
The Price:
Under $2 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These cards are really crisply done -- so much so I will be slabbing one of the Youngs for the school ties part of the stash at some point even though these were all seriously cheap pick-ups. The Alabama QB was joined by the Aussie UFC Octagon Girl (Blundell) and Lind who you might know from The Goldbergs, The Gifted, Gotham or Big Sky among other acting roles. I really need to scout that checklist and grab more -- these inserts are solid.

SPIKE A POSE
The Mag:
Spike Lee -- American Film, July/August 1989
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This image is a very solid one -- I'd totally grade this mag if it weren't too big for CGC slabs with its more tabloid size -- and it was an instant buy for me when I saw it. I'm surprised that I hadn't seen the image anywhere before -- if so, I would have bought it eons ago as I'm a sucker for sport/film crossovers.

HER OTHER AUTOGRAPH
The Item:
Mercedes Varnado autographed Star Wars: The Mandalorian 8-by-10 photo (BAS Witnessed)
The Price:
$35
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
You probably know her as Sasha Banks or Mercedes Moné in the wrestling ring, but before that and then in between she was Mercedes Varnado (and she still is). Her role in The Mandalorian as Koska Reeves is the reason this one is here. This auto was witnessed and uses a short-style auto -- basically a "MS" that isn't really what most of her stuff looks like. Her Banks autos are a "$-line B-line" while her Star Wars certified cards are a "M-line V-line" ... the only full sig she has done is for her newer ring name. This long-term Banks collector will add one of those at some point soon when the combo of item and appearance strikes me for a price I like. This one covered this "other" style sig ... not my favorite but it was a good price to go there ... plus a lot of her other Star Wars photos from private signings have some rough-looking, oversized sigs that overwhelm image or feel sloppy -- like the entire session was done at light speed or something.

SOME WWE (MAIN ROSTER) NEWCOMERS
The Cards:
Aoife Valkyrie (Lyra Valkyria), Ilja Dragunov & Kiana James assorted 2021-2023 early Panini America and Topps UK cards and parallels
The Price:
About $13 total (about half of that being the Red James)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This trio of newcomers from NXT already had cards from well before their time at the top level in WWE and I've been picking them off (and others) rather casually at times since they arrived. The lone Topps card here of Dragunov is actually from a Topps UK release that's more of a traditional set and not gaming so I grabbed it -- technically a Rookie Card -- while the other of him felt like a proper color for a star from Moscow. The Valkyria is a secondary tier and a parallel from that set so that made it an easy addition on the cheap, while the James parallels for her RC are all-business just like her character. Most of these are grading candidates, too, if Buzz had unlimited funds. But, since I'm a collector I'm focused elsewhere first with stuff like these being candidates depending on how things go.

IT'S ALWAYS TIFFY TIME
The Cards:
Tiffany Stratton 2023 Donruss Elite WWE 2023 Donruss Elite WWE bulk lot
The Price:
25 cents a card
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Some of you have been buying and selling Stratton's newest cards like she's the future of the business -- and she might be -- but I've sat back and watched a lot of you pay well for her second-year cards (as you should ... to a degree) while picking off some things myself. My pick-ups are on the cheaper side or on the safe-addition side (RCs, Prizm, inked items) more than the pricey and rare chases that will be more volatile. This brand is one that could be very condition-sensitive depending on how ruthlessly you grade stuff as all that foilboard can showcase flaws so easily right out of the pack. So ... I grabbed this bulk lot since it was cheap with an eye on grading and I maybe -- maybe -- found one out of the dozens that I think could be a 9.5/10 contender. There's a lot of cardboard to come for this star and I'd bet cash that a championship is coming this year, too.

HITTING THE PLATE
The Card:
Nick Swisher 2009 Bowman magenta printing plate (1/1)
The Price:
$25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pick-up was a no-brainer, though I wasn't as much of a fan of some of his new cards back then. Why? Prices attached to my player's cards back in the Yankees years when they arrived ... well, they got pricey. Now, almost a decade after his last cards, a lot of stuff is cheaper -- at least when it surfaces -- and I will grab stuff when it works. At the same time, I may be slowing a bit, too. (I've let some stuff get away from me as my focuses are meandering.)

SOMETHING'S BETTER THAN NOTHING
The Book:
Batman/Superman: World's Finest No. 11 (2023) -- Jack White III variant by Rob Jones (second print)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
So, what's the deal with White Stripes star on the cover of a D.C. comic book? I had to do some looking as I had no idea this even existed until recently. Apparently in 2022 the company revealed that The Joker's real name in the books these days is Jack White and there were some reaction interviews as White is also a bit of a comics fan. Then last year this one arrived as a variant with the real-world White's long-running concert poster-maker Rob Jones bringing this one to life using the blue hues of White's solo work (instead of all that red from long ago). It was popular enough that this second-print happened after that (some slight changes to basically the same image ... just more white). Beyond that? I'm not sure why all this happened. I pondered whether I wanted a graded copy -- still not sure as the image is odd to me -- but I dig grab this from a dealer I buy from regularly. It arrived with a slight crunch near the mid spine that I didn't expect ... so this one won't end up slabbed. I guess something's better than nothing.

BARGAIN-PRICED INK
The Items:
Taya Valkyrie & Jacob Fatu autographed Republic of Lucha 8-by-10 promo photos
The Price:
$5 apiece (Black Friday sale)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
My last of my Black Friday pick-ups from a store owned by a pair of AEW stars is ink from a name who's been a bit of everywhere and has the cardboard (though not boatloads) to prove it, while Fatu is new to the WWE developmental ranks right now and could figure to join The Bloodline as one of the new members at some point. (Maybe.) He's the son of Tama/The Tonga Kid who some probably remember from the 1980s, and his uncles are Rikishi and Umaga and he's cousins to The Usos. He's been a pro for more than a decade and for that price I added the ink just to say I had him in the stash.

MAYBE THAT'S MY JERSEY?
The Card:
Alex Avila 2009 Bowman Sterling Gold Refractor (/50) -- Rookie Card parallel
The Price:
Under $5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I'll never know for sure, but after I did my homework on this jersey in a past Collecting Game-used piece I pondered Avila's RCs and narrowed things down to this card as a possible suspect showing my jersey in all of its photo-day glory. The photo here isn't one with gear for a catcher beyond the helmet, and, since Topps would do its own image shoots for all players -- perhaps most-likely to happen on team photo day as that's the point of photo day -- I think this could be a winner from that time. The only catch is that the undershirt sleeve lengths on the card don't match the studio photos in my known photos (at the link). If I remember correctly, Sterling arrived late in the year, so at least that date doesn't somehow nix the timing of this one completely.

TWO LAZERS
The Cards:
Shaun Alexander & Tua Tagovailoa 2023 Panini Select Draft Picks White Lazer Prizm parallels
The Price:
Under $4 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This parallel texture is a nice one -- as you tilt the cards all kinds of electric-style reflections happen. I grabbed this pair of school ties guys for my stash, though I think the texture looks better on sets with more color involved in the parallel design. Simple as that.

CREATIVE MARKETING
The Item:
That Thing You Do (1996) media booklet/press kit with 11 8-by-10 photos featuring Tom Hanks, Liv Tyler, Charlize Theron, Rita Wilson, Chris Isaak, Kevin Pollak, Steve Zahn, Peter Scolari & others
The Price:
$5 (a steal) as part of a small lot
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This press kit is soooo different from the pack -- years and years of movies' promotional materials simply showed up as papers and photos in folders -- and it's cool because it suits this retro film about a pop band. The typical photos and a stapled info packet are in there for this one, naturally, but there's also a die-cut circular promotional booklet that's the size of a record and it all arrived in a slipcase like an old record. Throw in some A-list names here and it's a fun piece on the cheap.

THE ROCK STRIKES A POSE
The Items:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson lot of Celebrity Photo Agency photo slides from 1999 Emmy Awards
The Price:
$10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This group of slides doesn't pack a lot of variety, but it's definitely a moment in time as prime Rock was caught on the red carpet for the Emmy Awards with The People's Eyebrow in tow. I've only stumbled upon wrestling slides a couple times in the last year or so of dabbling with these -- mainstream crossover appearances perhaps didn't happen as much then as they might now -- but this was an easy pick-up along with a couple of other small lots that I'll pop in here in coming months.

MINI MADNESS
The Card:
Spencer Strider 2023 Topps 206 Low Series Piedmont Back
The Price:
About $1.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This isn't the easiest back variation to find (it's close) but I prefer that oldschool Piedmont look over the version with the player's name. This card made in the style of early 1990s tobacco cards is simple ... and that's why it was a simple addition.

TWO BIG RELICS
The Cards:
Nick Swisher 2014 Topps Museum Collection Momentous Material jumbo bat Relic (/5) & 2012 Topps Museum Collection Momentous Material jumbo jersey/pants Relic (/35)
The Price:
About $40
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is the reality of collecting a player who hasn't had cards in a long time -- price extremes can happen -- but for me they were both still no-brainers at $35 for bat (that's high, but it's lower volume) and $5 for the jersey (that's perhaps low).  I'm a sucker for jumbo Relic as long as they're in my budget range.

NOW THAT IS A BOTCH
The Card:
Roger Maris misprint with two other cards' front/packs overprinted 1978 TCMA The 1960s
The Price:
$1.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This kind of botch is not what you'll easily find -- when they're this bad they go in the garbage can -- but a run of these popped up online and with Maris in play I had to grab it, especially at that price.  The front side -- a smooth stock -- has the Cubs' John Boccabella looking all normal (and common) while this back has a Maris front and a John McCall front on the rough side so it's all bleeding a bit more than normal. Also on there is the correct Boccabella back ... but for a buck I still dig it.

STARTING AN ARMY! (KIND OF ON ACCIDENT)
The Items:
Shotzi Blackheart Funko Pop! WWE figures
The Price:
About $15 per Pop! ...
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This fearsome foursome kind of happened on accident, but it was a lesson for even this collecting veteran to read auction listings closely. Once these were truly live, I picked up a pair of them from an online seller in February ... except they literally took as long as they could to ship ... in April. That was the first day I could register a complaint/refund but I couldn't after they had shipped. In that meantime, these popped up live on WWE Shop so I grabbed a pair -- at a lower price -- figuring the online shenanigans could have meant I'd end up with nothing. (Didn't want to risk that.) What do I do with four of 'em? Well, one's riding my desk like it's a tank as I type, while the others are hanging out in a box. But ... once we get CGC grading on Funko Pop! toys, I think I have a candidate to test out that service.

SALLY FIELD'S MOM?!?
The Card:
Margaret Field 1948 Bowman Photoplay Stars
The Price:
$4.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This set is one that I'll admit I didn't know existed when I found it during a deep dive, but a number of cards in the set were so clean and so cheap I took a closer look and found three that seemed interesting. This one? She's the mother of veteran actress Sally Field. In less than a decade she had roles in more than 25 films thanks to a Paramount deal, while her final credits total is pushing 100 between movies and TV -- spots in stuff like The Lone Ranger, Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone and The Virginian to name a few. It's not her only card but it's one of very few.

SOME VINTAGE FUNK
The Mag:
The Big Book Of Pro Wrestling -- July 1969 with appearances from Terry Funk, The Sheik, Little Beaver & more
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Other than the funk around the staples where this one is showing some age, this 55-year-old mag caught my eye with its mess of images on the front with a few familiar names to me as well as some others that more-serious retro wrestling fans and collectors likely know, too. The colorized Terry Funk photo with blond hair got me too stop and then The Shiek and Little Beaver years before this WrestleMania III flattening spoke to me for this price. These older mags probably did get saved -- but not as much as they got read -- and the pulpy paper's acids can always reveal themselves more and more over time with discoloration and poor aging unlike stuff like Sports Illustrated that was printed on better paper. Would I grade it? I would have if the staple funk wasn't there ... it's still a simple but clean throwback with a lot of names.

CHROME SIMPLICITY
The Card:
Max Fried 2019 Topps Heritage High Number Chrome Refractor -- mega box only players (/570)
The Price:
Under $4
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This design (1970 Topps) is a clean one but perhaps a little dull vs. what arrived in the years before and after it -- but that's not really why I opted to grab this. As part of picking off a run of Fried's Heritage stuff I threw this one in since it's a Refractor and it's a Chrome card that only was found in mega boxes.

A SWIRL OF COLOR
The Card:
Bo Bichette 2021 Topps Gallery Next Wave
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Bichette's batting stance photos get me to look often and, well, that's probably what got me to bite here as this one is, well, kind of underwhelming otherwise. Like, I get it, a wave ... next wave ... OK, young star. I guess it's just the colors here that make me want more. Oddly, the parallels here are just based on a different color of ... foil.

BOLTON'S BALLFIELD
The Items:
Michael Bolton & Nicolette Sheridan lot of seven Celebrity Photo Agency slides from 1993/1994 charity events
The Price:
Pocket change as part of a big lot
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I didn't have this Office Space contemporary music star on my mental list of probable finds in some big celeb slide lots, but here we are and it's not even just from one event. Were they a surprise to me? Nope, believe it or not Michael Bolton has some baseball/softball card appearances in the past as merch tied to some 1990s George Teague vs. Michael Bolton Celebrity Softball Challenge events that had members of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and others all suiting up to raise money for charity. I have had one of Bolton's cards for years -- and it's been in my to-grade stack for a long time, too -- but I've never done it. Most of these slides are from an event with Barry Bonds ... no cardboard there that I know of there.

REFRACTOR ROOKIES (ALMOST)
The Cards:
Mickie James & Maria Kanellis 2006 Topps Chrome Heritage WWE Refractors
The Price:
$13.50 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This Refractor duo was an affordable addition for the most part -- the James around $10, which is low for a RC parallel -- and I pondered both for grading. They're veterans at this point with plenty of highlights for a few companies and with all the emphasis on Chrome from some newcomers to wrestling I picked them off just so I didn't have to pay more later.

PARTY ON!
The Item:
Wayne's World 2 press kit with 18 8-by-10 photos featuring Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Tia Carrere, Aerosmith, Christopher Walken, Kim Basinger, Kevin Pollak, Chris Farley, Ed O'Neill, James Hong, Lorne Michaels & Rip Taylor
The Price:
$14.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The price was right here considering the volume of images in this set and the fact that they are all clean as this was, basically, an untouched promotional kit. The Aerosmith band photo with Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar is a classic that I'd bet could sell for more on its own (probably has, I didn't look) while others and the cameos here are solid pieces for a big franchise back then. Another reason I grabbed it? While there are Saturday Night Live cards for the dynamic duo (where they were "born" before the two films) there weren't any card sets ... so this is among only a handful of printed collecting options here.

GOING RETRO (AGAIN)
The Card:
Claudia Cardinale 1964 Ediciones Raker Estrellas del Cine y de la TV
The Price:
About $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This throwback comes from a set of Spanish stickers (though there's no adhesive) showcasing stars of cinema and television at that time and I grabbed this since it looked really clean compared to a lot of stuff from that era for this name that I dabble with from time to time. (Nothing too in-depth, just pick off a few things here and there.) Most of these can be found on the cheap -- so they're probably not that rare -- and some of the others in the set include Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Brigitte Bardot, Warren Beatty, Angie Dickinson, Anthony Perkins, Ann-Margret, Steve McQueen, Janet Leigh, Elvis Presley, Audrey Hepburn and plenty more. There are some really cleanly printed portraits -- the only drawback is that the stock is basically paper.

MINTY MUTOSCOPE
The Card:
"Wouldn't I Make A Good Petty Officer?" 1945 Mutoscope Artist Pin-ups -- art by Zoë Mozert
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This artist's story is an interesting one that I've mentioned in the past -- poke around in the archives for all the details -- and this is another of these that I picked up in a small lot as the condition here is very, very strong for something pushing 80 years old. I was all set to slab at least a couple of them ... until I saw the price on oversized slabs where I was considering it. While standard cards can sometimes be slabbed for $10-20, larger formats start at $50 apiece ... so, no, not now. (Maybe someday.) Another interesting tidbit on the artist here? Some of her cards in this set are actually painted off of photo of her ... I'm not sure, but that could be the case with this one.

A LOTTA SALMA
The Cards:
Assorted Salma Hayek lobby cards (domestic and international) from Fools Rush In (1997) & Frida (2002) (with appearances from Matthew Perry, Alfred Molina, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush & others)
The Price:
Pocket change apiece as part of a huge lot
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is some additional spring cleaning for me here as this run of lobby cards is from a massive lot I picked up literally a few years ago now. The collector I landed these from focused on a few names and broke up sets to focus on just a few stars among the casts and this is the last of the Hayek cards that were in there. Four different sets are seen in this one for two movies and, while sets can be pricey at times, I think they're worth the look if in good (basically unused) condition and showcase iconic moments, big names or early appearances. CGC actually grades these, too, but I haven't yet dabbled there either picking something off or submitting a set. I might.
