Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

A DIFFERENT DIRECTION ...
The Cards: Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) 2023 Topps Throwback Thursday Star Wars Wave 4 (/3,039)
The Price: About $40 for lot of nine
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: A lot of the online small-set releases from Topps have tempted me the last few years, but at times when I have bit the actual finished product isn't as appealing for my main reason I'd grab something -- issues that hurt if you're grading. This line has been tempting but instead of buying a bundle for a card that jumped out at me (like this one) I instead picked off a singles lot from a re-seller. Why? Again, grading. I was looking back at all of the 1952s for this brand and this one was by far the best of the bunch with the colors and photo. The centering here? About as flawed as the times that annoyed me in the past, but one or two here were decent enough that I'll send one in for grading at some point. They probably won't land top marks but I'd still be fine with a slabbed copy of this one as Dawson is a relative newcomer to Star Wars cards and in a lot of memorable past roles elsewhere.

WORKING THE EDGES
The Card:
Spencer Strider 2022 Panini Three and Two Rookie Jerseys (/60)
The Price:
About $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card isn't perfect -- it's got some edge chipping -- but that's probably why it fell into my hands a bit cheaper than other copies out there and I was fine with that as this is from a premium-priced brand that I'd probably not rip anyway due to the price and that risk of the results not really in my wheelhouse. The boxes have one encased auto, one encased memorabilia card and then three other cards and there's definitely big potential. Strider is easily one of the best young pitchers of the last two years and some of his stuff is really cheap, so I have dabbled when the bargains (like this one) present themselves.

MEMORABLE MOMENT ...
The Cards: Rhea Ripley 2023 Panini Instant WWE Versicolor (/5) and 10-count lot of regular card (/156)
The Price: More than I want to admit ... but at least I bought them direct.
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This was one part immediate impulse buy (the parallel) and then I opted to do a lot closer to the end of the sales window because, well, I think this match was the best of this year's Mania -- not even close -- and I do collect her stuff to a decent degree (though not everything). This group came from the first wave of 2023 Instant cards with a new design -- I like this look better for the basics but the color parallel touches were a bit underwhelming when I got them in-hand. Atop that, the centering on these cards this year might be a challenge if you slab ... I probably will do a copy of a base card but I think the parallel is too off to make it worth it this time, which is a bummer considering the initial cost.

REMEMBER THESE?
The Card:
Mickey Mantle 2022 Topps Project 70 -- by Alex Pardee (/13,107)
The Price:
$6
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This artist sold a boatload of cards in this Project but as it went on I bought very few cards -- I did some but by the end I was just mentally noting the few I'd might maybe want to grab later. Later is now -- at least at this price -- and I like this one's weird twists. It meshes the 1952 Topps photo with a colorful take on the 1981 Topps design with an iconic name. Plus, for some reason 1981 Topps looks pretty good in hot pink.

I NOTICED A DETAIL ...
The Item:
Nick Swisher autographed Cleveland 8-by-10 photo (PSA/DNA authenticated)
The Price:
About $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I have a ton of autographs of my PC player and I'm sure I didn't really need more -- but with no new cardboard for a few years now when items stand out I've grabbed them. This? It's a fully authenticated autographed photo, but, duh, that's obvious. The cool part? That helmet he's wearing in the photo with the chipped bill is in my collection -- and you can read all about it here. I have a couple other autographed photos where you can see game-used items I own in use -- I got those signed since I'd rather have a signed companion piece than change a gamer's on-field look. This is the first time I've found my item in action like this.

HER BEST ROOKIE CARD?
The Card:
Tiffany Stratton 2022 Panini Chronicles WWE One (/99) -- Rookie Card
The Price:
About $35
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This NXT star is going to be a big deal in the women's ranks soon -- as their champ -- but I don't think it will end there in WWE. Stratton's character shtick piles it on thick but it's good and she's a former gymnast meaning she can bring some extra flair to her moves in the ring. She's had some other pretty hardcore moments, toothat show she's truly committed. The interesting part for collecting? She's in just her second year as a wrestler (first NXT match in November 2021) and has zero cardboard before a few 2022 Panini releases. Atop that, she had no autographs as a rookie, so demand is there on her 2023 Prizm ink that just recently arrived. This is arguably her best Rookie Card as it's one of the rarer tiers in the Chronicles set -- and she wasn't included in all of the releases last year. I'm a buyer here and there for sure but I probably waited too long to grab some of the better stuff.

AN EARLIER ICON
The Cards:
Dot Richardson 2021 Goodwin Champions autograph & memorabilia cards
The Price:
About $5.25 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pairing caught my attention as I used to dabble with Olympic sport cards to a degree in the past and Richardson was a top softball name -- perhaps the top name -- in the years before Jennie Finch, Cat Osterman and Monica Abbott. Olympic softball cards -- or at least cards of those stars in college gear -- have happened but I'm pretty sure these are among Richardson's first certified autographs and memorabilia cards along with an appearance in one other newer set. For the price here, I had to bite and that one-card auto has so much going on. I don't think I'll slab here ... but I should.

GET BEHIND ME, SATAN ...
The Item:
The White Stripes Funko Pop! figures
The Price: About $12 via a big-box store
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one popped up out of the blue for me about a year after its initial release at a price I couldn't refuse. Simple as that. (These aren't the easiest to photograph in the package so I just went with the stock image.)

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PACK ... THAT I'LL NEVER OPEN
The Item:
Major League media press kit (booklet and photos)
The Price:
About $70
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This press kit includes an info book for writers to peruse and then a package of photos made for publications to scan and use with any stories they might do on this new movie as it arrived back in 1989. I have picked off more than a few of these over the years because there are some collecting quirks here beyond the star power and sports ties for a top baseball movie. Some kits included photos that were only made for kits going to sports publications/departments vs. others sent to film/features writers. In this case, I'm not sure what exactly is inside my pack of photos and I'll never find out as that sealed package of images is why I ponied up here a little more than I normally would. I have never seen one with an unopened, untouched package of prints and this is the super-rare situation where I'm not going to open a pack. The typical inclusions are in the smaller photo above (from eBay) but I did some closer looking at my photo pack and I am confident that there are more than six images included this time. The photos are the definite key to press kits -- they are collectable on their own and can sometimes sell well -- while the folders take the hits over the years and are often not as appealing even if they are well-designed like this one is.

BARGAIN STORE GEM
The Item:
The Walking Dead: Here's Negan! hardcover (2017)
The Price:
$2.99 via a bargain store ($19.99 cover price)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This perfect copy of a hardcover is still sealed and its only flaw per se is the Ollie's Bargain Outlet price sticker that's attached. That regional bargain closeout chain sells a boatload of graphic novels -- an unusually impressive volume -- at prices that are really good, too. The bad news is that they put those stickers directly on the covers of most books, including the ones that aren't wrapped. If they were wrapped, you'd probably see me dabble more with this kind of stuff. It's hard to pass something up if it's good and like 85 percent off.

SIX-PACK OF MACK ...
The Cards:
Mac Jones 2021 Panini Chronicles Prestige, Gridiron Kings, Luminance, Panini, Chronicles & Playoff Momentum -- Rookie Cards
The Price:
Well under $10 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This former Alabama Crimson Tide star is one that NFL prospectors and flippers have latched onto hard with new-car asking prices for his rarer autographed debuts in slabs ... that's just not my thing. I tend to collect low-end and make sure I get an autograph and a memorabilia card of a player and then the rest is situational depending on price or if I like the card. I landed his ink back in his USA Football days on the cheap, and, while I do prefer his college stuff when the photos do look good, the all-in-one magic of Chronicles NFL is appealing to me, too. I'll do more or grab slabs no matter what happens this coming season -- it should be a pivotal year for him and those who bought in big.

BELIEVER BULK BUYS
The Cards:
Tiffany Stratton 2022 Panini NXT bulk lots of about 70 total Rookie Cards
The Price:
About $45 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This set is a loaded one when it comes to new talents but its stock being real cardboard has created challenges if you're a fan of grading and wanting to find elite copies between issues on bottom edges, corners and back surfaces along with the corners having dark ink. I picked up a couple of decently priced bulk lots -- the boxes are cheap and they deliver good base volume every time if you rip by the case -- in search of something slab-worthy. This one yielded only a couple candidates for an high-grade slab in my mind. I've done some small lots like this on a couple of her cards as she's got future A-lister written all over her.

FROM THE MOTHER'S DAY SET ...
The Card:
Maryse 2019 Topps On-Demand Set No. 8 -- WWE Mother's Day (/107)
The Price:
$8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Topps made this set around Mother's Day just a few years ago showcasing stars who are also moms and it should have been a no-brainer to buy back then -- nine cards for only $14.99 -- and especially would be by today's standards (that price gets you about three cards max these days). But ... I didn't. Only 107 sets were ordered and printed and these cards on Topps Now stock run pretty clean, too, so odds are you're perhaps more likely to find them slabbed with a high price and a high grade attached. There are about three names in the set who I have collected off and on during their careers and Maryse was one of them (when she was a regular) so I figured I'd grab this since it was a little more affordable than other notablesI spotted.

BOLDLY BORED ... BUT I LIKE THE HOLOGRAM
The Cards:
1994 Skybox The Making Of Star Trek: The Next Generation Collector Edition & Platinum Edition sets (/50,000 each)
The Price:
$9.99 each
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These boxed sets aren't all that rare as there were three versions -- all at 50,000 copies made -- with the only differences being a bonus pack or item found in the tray as a companion to the same cellophane-wrapped set showcasing 100 behind-the-scenes views of the series. They are serious behind scenes views like that "The Idea" card seen above and the set is a pure snoozer unless you want to read the backs and learn about the series in true book-like detail for pre-production, construction, costumes, production, special effects and post-production. (Those are its subsets.) On the flip side, there may be some cameos in the set for people who don't have any other cards. Maybe. With the sets sealed and so cheap I bit and I opened one -- too dull to do a Buzz Break -- but the thick and heavy lucite hologram of the Enterprise you see here is a cool piece for sure. The other set included a plastic 3D-ish viewer and some cards to check out with it, while the one I didn't buy included a brass pin ... I just didn't need that. I was so unimpressed with these that I let them sit for months but decided to do some spring cleaning and here we are. For the price I paid, I like the hologram, though.

RUBY, RUBY, RUBY ...
The Cards:
Ruby Riott 2020 Topps Finest WWE Refractor & Green Refractor (/99) Autographs & 2018 Topps WWE Undisputed Blue (/25) -- Rookie Card parallel
The Price:
About $42
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This former WWE star now known as Ruby Soho had a big arrival in AEW but then kind of vanished ... but she's back on the radar with a pair of favorites of mine -- Saraya (aka Paige) and Toni Storm -- so I figured I'd pull these out of the waiting room and show them off. I think I picked these up just before her AEW arrival as they weren't that cheap but I was a fan of her former team and was buying her anyway if the price was right. The ink here was most of the cost but the Green one looks really solid with its photo. Meanwhile that RC parallel is from a set that typically grades very well with its thicker stock, so I am sure that's one reason I bit beyond the low volume and a low price.

NOT A SLAB, BUT SLABBED
The Card:
Christy Mathewson 2019 Mile High Card Company National Promos (/1,000)
The Price:
Under $9
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This slabbed card got me with a good price for a novelty from a past National Sports Collectors Convention showcasing a Hall of Famer and legend of the game -- also a name that doesn't have a ton of cards with quality images. I liked it all for $8 and change and it's got a simple and clean piece of artwork, too.

HAMMERIN' HANK
The Cards:
Hank Aaron 2020 Topps 206 Series 4 & 2022 Topps Archives
The Price:
Under $2
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pairing comes from a type of card set I like to dabble with -- tobacco-size minis -- and then the Archives card is one that has a perfect photo where I'd totally slab a copy of the card as long as it looks like a 10 contender. (Easier said than done.) Atop that, they were both cheap despite being cards of the former all-time home run king.

SEEING SAPPHIRE
The Card:
Nick Swisher 2016 Topps Chrome Sapphire Edition (announced /250)
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This set is a landmark one for a lot of reasons -- some good Rookie Cards and good chase parallels with a pair of Superfractor bonuses in every set -- but all that's out of my price range (one set is in the store at the link below if you want to dabble). This is my player's only appearance in that brand as this was his final flagship card so it's my lone chase here. Fun fact? I own the MLB Authenticated jersey he's wearing on this card -- I got curious about the photo and found its info on Getty Images and it happened to be the same date as a jersey I had grabbed. Probably another reason I'll grab these cards when I see them.

A RETRO IMPORT
The Item:
Metallica on Metallion magazine (Vol. 2 No. 10)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This mag popped up with a bargain price at a place I buy from regularly and I bit since it looked pretty early photo-wise with the the first main Metallica lineup on the cover and it was very, very clean condition-wise. (Design-wise, not so much.) I didn't know this magazine, but I figured it was some kind of international import -- and it is. It's a Canadian metal magazine didn't last long -- about two years -- and this was its next-to-last issue. Metallica's debut album arrived in 1982 so this could be a contender for being one of their earlier magazine covers -- not totally sure -- but a young look at Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton and James Hetfield in 1985 makes it a compelling item either way. It won't grade at an elite mark but this is an interesting enough early piece it would still be interesting slabbed.

LAST TIME INK, THIS TIME POCKET CHANGE
The Card:
Michelle Yeoh as Col. Wai Lin -- 2019 Upper Deck James Bond Collection Silver
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Her historic Academy Awards win got me looking at her cards and in the last Buzz Buys I showed off the ink that I grabbed. That wasn't cheap, but this one was mere change. Why buy? (Why not when it's that cheap?) I don't mind some small cards to serve as companions alongside some hits in a stash. She actually has a lot of cards between Bond and stuff like Star Trek, so there's a chance I'll add a memorabilia card to the mix at some point if I happen upon one.

A PARTIAL RAINBOW
The Cards:
Nick Swisher 2008 Bowman Chrome Refractor lot
The Price:
About $30
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This small lot includes one parallel I think I needed -- the Red (/5) -- but at this price the rest were just throw-ins with the Orange (/25), Gold (/50), Blue (/150), X-Fractor (/199) and a base card in the stack. Finding stuff like this still isn't all that tough but some colors are really starting to dry up for my player as these are now 15 years old. I could only imagine how some of the newer collectors are feeling about stuff for star players from this timeframe that they might want but can't find in box or singles form. That should help prices for those still holding for those players and if there are fans dedicated enough to track them down.

WELL BEFORE HER MARQUEE MOMENT
The Cards:
Rosita/Queen Zelina Vega assorted early TRISTAR TNA cards (rookies) and autos/Relics along with a 2022 Panini Prizm WWE Ice parallel
The Price:
About $50 (bought over time)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This WWE veteran was in the biggest match of her career just recently -- a bout against Rhea Ripley for the Smackdown Women's Championship during the company's return to Puerto Rico. She didn't win that one, of course, as the big-time underdog, but she was treated like the main event from a hot crowd and even in a loss it was easily one of the biggest moments she has had and will be tough to top. On cardboard she's got plenty of WWE stuff from 2018-forward but her time as Rosita in TNA/Impact back in the days of TRISTAR cardboard is where her Rookie Cards and earliest autographs and memorabilia cards are found. I picked off some of the ink seen here months ago and added the others in more recent months and figured, well, now's the time to show them all off. A couple of these are really rare cards (/5 on one) so that's how the dollars added up. Also interesting here is her teammate, Sarita (aka Sarah Stock) who has had a lengthy career both in the ring and behind the scenes. I'd like to slab a RC or two here but the narrow borders and soft, glossed stock create challenges on centering and corners. Instead, I graded some ink and you'll see them in future Making The Grade pieces here if I haven't dropped one there already.

SIMPLY SABU
The Card:
Sabu 2014 Leaf Originals Wrestling Yellow Autographs (/99)
The Price:
About $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This former ECW star has very little cardboard generally speaking vs. other greats and it's from all around the world -- I think his Rookie Card is from a BBM Japan set, for example -- and when it comes to ink he also doesn't have a ton of cards, either. This was one I needed despite some centering issues and I liked the color here -- reminds me of the gold pants he might be wearing in the illustration -- and his signature pose. You can find signed photos for around this price easily, so that's one reason this one wasn't all that pricey but I dig it. If that centering was stronger, this would be an easy slab.

PROMOTIONALLY SPEAKING ...
The Item:
No Doubt 1992 promotional press photo
The Price:
Around $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This promo photo comes from the same year as their debut studio album (Is this a rookie card scenario?) and it even uses the same logo as their debut CD cover, but I basically grabbed this since it's very clean, very affordable and a piece of of an iconic 1990s group that lasted well beyond that time. I don't think they have a lot of cards -- at least American stuff -- so stuff like this is perhaps the next-closest thing for me to dabble with on the cheap.

SOME GAMING
The Cards:
Britt Baker, Chelsea Green & Shotzi Blackheart in the 2017 Filsinger Games Shimmer Wave 5 set (others not shown) and Maxwell Jacob Friedman and Sami Callihan Filsinger Games CZW Wave 5 (others not shown)
The Price:
$15 per set
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These are just some of the stars from a pair of sets from a gaming card company that has made these oversized cards in small sets (a handful of cards in each series) for years now with deals made with various indy promotions (Shimmer and CZW in this case) and then stuff for many other companies and wrestlers you'll know from elsewhere. This Shimmer set is one I have picked up a few copies of -- I'm big on the early Shotzi card here -- and there are others I still need from other sets but haven't ponied up to grab them. (Some have literally just one name I want and no others.) I grabbed these long ago, so this is partly more spring cleaning of my back-log of buys but with blaster prices still being high or at times underwhelming I may continue to dabble on oddball stuff like this in the meantime to pick off names I like. Sometimes singles sale prices can surprise with key names here on eBay but, oddly, not a lot of people buy the sets to break them up as singles. I suspect it's perhaps due to their larger size. (These fit fine in 4-by-6 toploaders.)

THREE OF A KIND
The Cards:
Cora Jade 2022 Panini Prizm WWE, 2022 Panini Select WWE lot & 2022 Panini Select Red Prizm (/249)
The Price:
About $16 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This NXT newcomer is one who also doesn't have a ton of cards -- Rookie Cards in 2022 releases -- and a couple things before that from Topps in its final releases (event promos and autos in one set) and then an indy card. That's it. Jade has had a high-profile spot in NXT so far but hasn't yet been the top star on the women's side yet. Initially I was a buyer on some cards but prices on her stuff, especially Panini autos, were strong -- too strong -- so I have waited some cards out. The Red here was nice for the price and the Prizm looked slab-worthy with that centering. Ultimately, I've added some slabs outright instead of submitting -- she's graded more than some other newcomers -- so you'll see more of her in the future both here and in WWE.

A NEW EDITION ...
The Cards:
Spencer Strider 2023 Topps Now (/1,006)
The Price:
Bundle price direct from Topps
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is my newest Topps Now pick-up of the year -- actually just my second purchase all year -- but I bit as he's a casual collecting subject of mine and this photo is just oddly quirky to my eye with that follow-though. (It looks like a Gummy Arts cartoon came to life if you know that artists's work.) I didn't land a parallel with my bundle -- bummer -- but I'll still slab one of these at some point.

HIS FIRST ...
The Item:
Kurt Angle -- WWF Magazine July 2000 (first WWE magazine cover)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Last year I went on a magazine research run grabbing a number of iconic wrestling names on either clean covers or WWE magazine debuts. (And not just wrestling, too.) While its Wheaties schtick is kind of dumb, this is Angle's first WWE magazine cover. It was pretty clean but it wasn't shipped to me securely and it suffered some surface and spine damage along the way which killed any grading ideas I had. (Not end of the world, it was a lower-priority find.)

HER FIRST ...
The Card:
Chelsea Green 2019 Topps WWE NXT Autographs Silver (/25)
The Price:
Under $18
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one has sat for some time because in that time she was in WWE, then not in WWE, but is now back in WWE. This is a rarer parallel and it's super, super clean -- should be in a slab at some point it's so clean for a card with an on-card auto, skinny stock and all that dark ink. She's an established veteran with plenty of out-of-ring chops but with a lot of ring time, too. I picked this up long ago, so that price might be a little high vs. other newer autos ... but the condition here made it worth it.

BARGAIN JUMBO ...
The Card:

The Price:
$6
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
His Yankees cards like this were pricey additions back in the day but I happened upon this one on the cheap as the seller didn't mention how rare it is ... the serial-number isn't the easiest read. For me it was a n0-brainer -- I had one but at that price I'll buy 'em all day when this scarce.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
The Item:
Kevin Thorn & Ariel autographed WWE/ECW promotional photo (via The Wrestling Universe)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This vampire duo from the WWE reboot of ECW wasn't really around all that long -- less than a year -- so she doesn't have any WWE cards beyond maybe some oddball international releases and he only has a handful of cards. (She's got a lot of Bench Warmer cards, though, with her real name, Shelly Martinez.) Because they don't have much and since it was a dual-auto for a cheaper price via a trusted chain that regularly does signings at their stores, I bit. (Pun intended.) I try to have an autograph of many past WWE names if they present themselves reasonably priced on a decent-looking certified card or photo.

GOING FOR GOLD
The Card:
Atlanta Braves 2016 Topps Heritage Jumbo 5-by-7 Gold (/10)
The Price:
$5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This cameo card for my player (far right) was one I think I found during a curiosity deep dive of these jumbo cards that had been sold as sets via Topps along with its wall art in recent years. Since this is the Gold version it's limited to only 10 copies, which made its price a no-brainer.

PANINI REWARDS RETURNS ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Cards:
Calvin Pryor, Brock Selvidge & Dylan Smith autographs
The Price:
About 200 points
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These were among my last Panini Rewards points cards -- four 50-pointers if I remember correctly -- and, well, two of them were just kind of "I give up" picks while Smith at least has school ties for me. The pickings were super slim when I was looking late last year or earlier this year but at least I no longer have points just sitting there. Recent waves of additions to the site seemed pretty strong, though, at times so it's worth the look if you still have points in the system.

ROOKIE CARD FINALE
The Card:
Bobby Witt Jr. 2021 Bowman's Best -- Rookie Card
The Price:
$4.75
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This second-generation star is one of the few players who have Rookie Cards here earlier than their planned 2022 cards (the ones with RC logos) as a checklist mistake had prospects mixed with veterans in the base set for this release. While I had wanted to land a bargain-priced slab here and call it done, I couldn't find one I liked (price vs. grade) when looking and instead just grabbed this raw copy. He's off to a rough start this season with his batting average but his speed and power is still there so far. He's a name to watch if the prices slip as he's got tons of potential or could be popular if he eventually lands elsewhere and is successful. Dips are when you should buy if you're a believer. (I'm a dabbler.)
