Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

MY LAST FROM THE PROJECT ...
The Card: Mickey Mantle 2021 Topps Project70 by Alex Pardee (/12,112)
The Price: $19.99 via Topps
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This artist captured most of the big-print-run attention in the second Project and this card that mashed his monster vibes with Mantle's 1952 Topps card and then 1981 Topps was the last one to get my attention and a buy last year. (Or was it this year?) Anyway, this one recently arrived in my mailbox and since this year's Project100 has arrived with a totally different approach and a number of changes -- not all good ones in my view -- I figured I'd drop this here. The print run of this won't be touched this year -- they're capped at less than half of that for 2022 -- but I suspect I'll be keeping an eye on the offerings. You should keep an eye on the past cards now if you passed before ... and keep an eye open on the new ones, too. You never know where the collecting winds and tastes might spark interest. Some monsters could be waiting.

HIGH-END RETRO?
The Card:
Jose Canseco 2020 Topps Brooklyn Collection Autographs Gold (/50)
The Price:
$24
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This brand is one I have always liked to window shop with, but I really haven't ever grabbed much for whatever reason. This card's color scheme struck me as golden for the team while the photo and crop is almost good enough to make it a perfect card. (I would have zoomed in just a little more.) The price wasn't bad here for the volume (Canseco remains popular), so I bit. I'm a deeply retired Canseco collector but I'll look from time to time. I also will take this time to wonder out loud ... why hasn't the company done some kind of Heritage meets high-end release? This is closer to that, but I think it could do well these days as long as it's not too high-end.

BO KNOWS
The Card: Bo Bichette 2020 Topps Brooklyn Collection -- Rookie Card
The Price: $19
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: The price here wasn't all that bargain-based since this isn't a serial-numbered card, but I bit since I wanted to try and grab a number of Bichette's RCs. I figured given the price and the type of release there might not be as many of this one as others he has throughout the year and prices could get hairy once stuff starts to dry up online. These thick-stock sets also tend to grade well in my experience, so that was another thought as I was looking.

I GOT YOU, BABE
The Mag:
John Goodman in The Babe -- Marquee magazine, March/April 1992
The Price:
$10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is the second issue from this Canadian pop culture mag that I found not that long ago and I had to have this one as this is a perfect kind of item to get slabbed -- and it should grab attention in any grade. There is a very small amount of cardboard and other stuff (press kits) to collect for this movie, but this simple image and its clean and bold presentation might be un-matched among everything. These mags are really skinny and the paper is not heavy quality, so I will once again wonder out loud how many might even still exist. It's a very clean copy, too.

FROM PANINI INSTANT
The Cards:
Nikkita Lyons & Mandy Rose 2022 Panini Instant WWE cards
The Price:
Enough to get free shipping
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I didn't need either one of these but since Lyons is a WWE newcomer who wasn't on Prizm's deep checklist I figured I'd bite with a 10-pack and then I threw in one copy of the Rose to get free shipping. Why a 10-pack? Well, I might grade one since it's a debut card so there's safety in numbers to pick a good copy to slab. I also figured these cards from the first wave of Instant cards might come in with a low print run. A total of 629 Lyons cards were made, while only 210 were made for Rose. Both are actually pretty high numbers for online-released singles and the first wave but I think debut cards here will be safe if the volumes aren't huge. They're certainly going to be rarer then the basic Prizm stuff in Rose's case. (She also doesn't yet have a ton of cards with her new NXT 2.0 look.) The second wave of Instant WWE came with a recent PPV, so these will be worth the watch if we get some notable happenings or debuts.

WHAT A RUSH ...
The Mag:
The Road Warriors -- The Wrestler magazine, January 1992
The Price:
$12
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a perfect example of several grabs for me recently -- I've taken some of those funds previously set aside for cheap-thrills (low-expectation) blaster boxes and have been dabbling elsewhere with stuff I intend to grade at some point since SRPs have risen. (I'm going for sure things instead of wondering what I may find in a box.) This duo is legendary and this mag, while not perfectly designed, is pretty clean for the era and the publisher. You can find a lot of retro wrestling mags on the cheap from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s without breaking the bank so it just comes down to condition -- or there not being a lot of other people looking to get a copy as clean as can be. The WWE's magazines are cleaner and on better paper -- but they have things like gloss that can be condition-sensitive -- but this isn't that. In some ways, this is better -- it's not as slick literally and figuratively and that gives it some charm. This isn't some 9.8-grade perfect copy but it's nice.

NO MASCOTS WERE HARMED (I THINK)
The Card:
Boomer 2017 Topps Pro Debut Fragments of the Farm Relics
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This guy has a casual thing for mascot cards but mascot Relics always get a closer look when I stumble upon them. I couldn't tell you a thing about Boomer, but I'm sure this was just some leftover fur from a haircut or something. (Right?) I can think of several mascots who have had mem cards and they're all more interesting to me vs. a bat chip or some plain-white swatch.

HITS THE SPOT
The Card:
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira 2013 Topps Finest UFC Fight Mat Jumbo Relic Blue Refractor (/188)
The Price:
$1.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is another of the jumbo UFC Relics where Topps tells you the event where the mat on the card came from and as long as there's not just a plain canvas swatch on the card you can often match it to one of the logos. How? Photos like this one from Getty Images. The event was UFC 156 and this pink piece is very likely from the top highlight area of the circular red logo rom the Ultimate Poker spot of the Octagon. There's nothing else pink like this among the logos and the Red stripe in the Bud Light logo doesn't go this light. Does this add value? Probably not ... but I like odd memorabilia cards or ones with a little something extra to them.

FOOD-ISSUE IMPORTS
The Cards:
Maryse 2009 Sabritas Topps Slam Attax
The Price:
Around $5 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These were found in bags of Sabritas snack foods -- that's the name that Frito-Lay uses for its products in Mexico and along the border states -- and it's a pretty obscure and deep release with more than 100 different cards. There just one card in a wrap inside each bag (the card in the back is still in its bag) and these are miniature versions of the Slam Attax gaming cards that were made in the U.S. at that time. These also have extra touches like embossing (think Action Packed), holofoil, gold foil and even acetate textures on the stock. I have had this pair tucked away for a while now -- I think this one was embossed -- and would totally want to find more as the standard version of this set is among one of my favorites for WWE gaming. Also part of this set is a run of Chester Cheetah cards where that iconic food character takes on the personas for a few WWE stars ... Chester Punk and Chestertaker are funny takes and maybe on my list at some point.

PROMO CARDS
The Card:
The Osbournes (Kelly, Sharon, Ozzy and Jack) Inkworks promo card lot
The Price:
Around $10 (maybe less)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I picked up a small lot of these quite a long time ago -- so long ago I can't find the details -- but I think it was something simple like 50 or 100 cards for less than $10. Why did I do this? I have pretty much everything else from this release (cases got cheap long, long ago and I ripped a couple before Inkworks closed ... so all those autograph redemptions got honored). I never saw this card and I figured a lot might cough up a copy or two that could be graded and pay for all of them as well as make a simple different slab in the non-sports stash. As you can see here, those corners don't make help make that an easy reality at all. Does it surprise any of you that it's been 20 years since that show debuted and was a hit series for MTV? (That surprised me.)

PERFECT ... EXCEPT FOR ...
The Mag:
Roger Clemens -- Sports Illustrated, May 12, 1986
The Price:
Around $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is Clemens' first SI cover and it's one that can sell pretty well if slabbed in top condition. Yes, this one has a mailing label but it looked really, really good otherwise ... and it is save for one very small thing. This mag totally looks like a 9.8 candidate everywhere but that bottom right corner where some dot of some kind of adhesive touched the corner and affected every single page. I was able to pull them all apart with no problem but I think this is something that would hurt the grade as every page has a small dark spot because of this. (It should. But how much?) This would still look so good in a slab despite the number and this one is so clean I may grade it, anyway. I'm not a big Clemens fan but it's a first and it's nice -- and it's stuff from years after this timeframe that gets a lot easier to find. The label doesn't bug me as it doesn't obnoxiously cover anything that important ... if anything a high-grade mailing label copy seems like more of an impossibility than a high-grade newsstand copy. The blotch is probably why it never got opened and how it was found in such perfect condition.

TWO OF A KIND
The Items:
Chasing Amy, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back press kits (photos and info packets)
The Price:
$9.99 per kit
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These are printed photos and info sent out to newspapers and magazines for their use in promoting films -- something that was common up until the late-1990s or early 2000s when CD-ROMs and then PDFs and online distribution took over at a lower cost for studios. This pair of movies has a number of big names in them and Silent Bob's stuff (err, Kevin Smith's stuff) is among my favorites with all of their nods to other movies within his universe. These were very clean and unused (despite not having folders as these commonly do) and that made the bargain here even better ... people often try to sell used and abused single photos from these kits for more than I paid for everything here. Chasing Amy arrived way back in 1997 while Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is over 20 years old now, too, so these have had plenty of time to age poorly. If CGC were to start grading these in sets (they might already, I'm not sure) I might have to slab a movie just for the heck of it. I have collected a lot of these over the years as they are card-like ... and cheap.

NEW INK
The Card:
Sarah Silverman autographed A Million Ways to Die In The West 8-by-10 photo (PSA/DNA authenticated)
The Price:
Around $40
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I'm not a massive Silverman fan but I have always appreciated many a comics' ability to zing an audience with a dirty one-liner to offend half of the crowd, kill the other half and then bring them all back on board with a stupid look or a smile, letting the awkward linger and work toward the next bit. She generated a lot of headlines in the past, particularly earlier in her career, with her work but is still appearing in movies and elsewhere in the pop culture world to this day. This movie was one with a concept I wanted to like (it sucked, Family Guy stuff was better) but the photo here and the auto was a good one for a solid price so I grabbed it. I have been picking up autos from memorable names of the 1990s and beyond here and there as, well, I don't see a lot of them needing the cash to sign autographs for card companies. (She doesn't have any certified autos.)

ALWAYS WANTED THIS ONE ...
The Comic:
Alan Davis' Excalibur -- Amazing Heroes August 1991
The Price:
Around $40 (yikes)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This artist and that series were easily my No. 1s back when I was regularly grabbing comics and this comic-sized magazine was one I always wanted to track down as the cover is strong and I never knew much about "my" artist. (So much so I never even knew what he looked like back then. This was all pre-Internet ... while the Image and other Marvel artists were all over the place in magazines. Never him.) This mag is still relatively obscure -- I hadn't ever really seen copies when I would occasionally check sites or shops -- but a recent late-night database check of Davis' work reminded me of this so I looked and spotted one. The yikes part above? That price is high for me -- but I wanted it -- and the worst part though was that it was indeed in its advertised condition (VG-plusish) despite looking really, really clean in a scan. It is clean with no color loss really but a lot of finger bends as it was a copy that got read. You can't really tell in the image but they are there and that's definitely not my preference in my collection as a grader. This issue would be a textbook test for a comics presser before slabbing but that would raise the wait time and grading time (as well as cost) a lot ... I figured it would be cleaner based on price I paid. I still like it ... but not as much as I had hoped.

ON THE RISE IN AEW?
The Cards:
Tay Conti 2018 Topps WWE NXT parallels and ink & 2019 Topps WWE Women's Division Bronze (/75) parallel and Bronze ink (/75), plus an autographed AEW 8-by-10 photo (via Wrestling Universe)
The Prices:
$5 to $15 (or so)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This former WWE NXT star has a black belt in judo and a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and before wrestling was working toward a spot on the Brazilian Olympic team. Her WWE run never made it beyond NXT though she was part of a WrestleMania battle royal and was a regular in Topps' WWE sets -- very regular -- with ink and plenty of cardboard despite not having the biggest profile even in NXT. She's one of a number of names who made the jump to AEW and has been among the regular higher-profile names in a number of storylines (fighting former UFC star Paige ZanVant is next) and that's when I started picking up some of her cards. The signed photo was only $9.99 and the first auto was the cheapest card here at around $5. Interest in some of her stuff picked up after the switch so some prices went up a bit but she was still affordable when I was looking. I prefer these early cards and/or on-card autos over the newer AEW stuff right now, too.

IT'S LOIS LANE! (BUT IT'S NOT.)
The Card:
Margot Kidder as Bridgette Crosby 2005 Inkworks Smallville Season 4 Pieceworks
The Price:
$6.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
She's obviously known as Lois Lane in the Superman movies but when it came to Smallville she had a small role as somebody else in a younger Clark Kent's world. The prices on some of these memorabilia cards got me to bite as I picked up her ink from this one (or a different set) long ago. Non-sports memorabilia cards definitely get overlooked vs. the autographs, so I'll go bargain-hunting from time to time.

RETRO POP CULTURE
The Mag:
Pam Dawber & Robin Williams (Mork & Mindy) -- People Weekly Oct. 30, 1978
The Price:
Around $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This TV show's schtick (Mork being an animated alien with all kinds of quirky sayings) is not one Buzz knows that well at all, but it was one that captured my attention as a little, little kid toward the end of its run (1978-82). What struck me as interesting here was that this issue arrived about a month after the series debut (Sept. 14, 1978) which seems like this could potentially be one of the earliest magazine covers for the series if not the first. I have no idea if that's the case -- it was just a gut thing that told me to throw it into a batch of vintage mags on the cheap. Heck, it might be Robin Williams' first magazine cover -- or at least a first major one -- given how this was a weekly back then and that really wasn't an overall norm. He's a beloved comedy legend and appears on a lot of magazines from around this time but I didn't see any before it. It's not perfect but it's still quite clean and iconic ... perfect for a slab.

WIN THIS T-SHIRT ...
The Mag:
Rosario Dawson -- Esquire April 2006
The Price:
Around $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a newer example of what also might get my grading attention these days, though Dawson's new Star Wars cards are opening her up to more traditional collectibles with her first certified ink and I will track down something there at some point when prices settle. (They aren't her first cards, though -- those come earlier for a couple of franchises and I'll mention those at a later time.) Esquire is a long-running style-making mag and many an A-lister has been on its cover ... everybody from Dawson to Muhammad Ali, to Britney Spears or The Rock, Peyton Manning, George Clooney, Keith Richards, Marilyn Monroe, Tiger Woods, Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, Tom Brady and so on. (It's an impressive list ... just do some Google searches. I could name 50 big names or cool covers.) The format has changed a lot over the years -- a lot of the iconic 1960s issues and later notables are sizes that are not grading-friendly as they are larger than a slab can hold -- but the design, photography, typography ... so many will look good graded -- and I will grade some. I remembered seeing this on a newsstand shelf back then -- flipping around what was new on a post-work, late-night grocery/baseball card run -- because of the very-memorabilia collector-friendly "Win this T-Shirt" blurb but for whatever reason I didn't buy it. The tough part, as always, with magazines is condition. Also, the collector in me wants to know ... how can I find out who won the shirt?

STORY WAITING TO BE TOLD ... MAYBE
The Card:
Roy Rogers 1997-98 The Genuine Article Hardwood Autographs (/7,500)
The Price:
Less than $3 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is an oddball story waiting to be written by some mainstream media/blogger guy if they can track down Rogers ... that may not be tough as he's an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers. So, what's the deal here? Note how I spelled his name. Now note how it's spelled on the card. Then note how the autograph reads. There's no "d" in his name ... but these autographs -- cards that don't actually look suspect or bad at all -- are signed with the wrong spelling. This release was awful -- I thought that even back then -- but it came and went with an autograph in every pack but not before even Beckett Basketball brought up this anomaly back in the day. Maybe Rogers signed them that way as a joke? Maybe he didn't sign them at all? I have always grabbed these when I have seen them in-person (I have about 10 copies) and have actually gotten him to sign stuff once ... but didn't have this with me and or have time to ask about it years ago.

REMEMBER ME?
The Items:
Oakland A's 1988 Donruss Team Collection book
The Price:
Well under $10 (for a few)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
If you remember these, you're probably old like me, though these were from early in my collecting years. What are they? Well, it's a simple booklet of cardboard sheets for a single team with all of the basic cards included and then a few new updated cards thrown in for players added to the team in 1988. These are similar to regular cards but with small differences like copyright years. These books were made for the A's, Cubs, Mets, Red Sox and Yankees and this was the only year. There were 27 cards (three sheets of nine) per book and that's about it. I found these cheap and bought a few and they are quite clean, too, perhaps stored away sealed for years in the USPS envelopes you see with it here. I saw these long ago on a family vacation (literally back then) but didn't bother as they were oddly pricey. Now? Not so much.

POTENTIAL PLAYER THIS SEASON?
The Card:
Tua Tagovailoa 2020 Rookie Cards -- Panini Legacy, Chronicles Draft Picks Elite, Chronicles Draft Picks Playoff, Illusions
The Price:
All under $2 apiece
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I'm predisposed to buy his stuff as a Crimson Tide guy, but given how much stuff he has out there and how cheap a lot of it is, well, I think he's got a lot of potential this coming season for some gains and rebounding prices ... if his new toys deliver and people are believers. I'm likely buying him no matter what but these were cheaper grabs last year that I had stashed away to show here. They aren't anything big -- and one might do well just picking off cheap slabs from those who opted to sub and try to flip -- but I like 'em.

RETRO SIMPLICITY
The Card:
Bart Starr -- Sports Illustrated, Aug. 25, 1975
The Price:
Around $10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Starr's covers as a Green Bay Packers legend will always get more attention -- and they should -- but I liked this one showing his time as the Packers' coach for the price and condition. The label isn't perfect but the overall condition is not atrocious, either. Will I slab it? Maybe not soon but it's a definite maybe. The Hall of Famer is a popular one and an NFL icon ... and another school ties guy for me.

FEEL THE GAME
The Card:
Jim Plunkett 1990 Action Packed (Braille back)
The Price:
$1.20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is one of a number of cards from the past that have Braille on the back instead of traditional type and it was included in factory sets as well as randomly inserted in packs. The back says "Raiders win Super Bowl XV. Jim Plunkett named MVP." Why? Plunkett's parents were blind. Check out this story from People magazine back then. Action Packed included Braille cards in several releases and other companies actually tried it, too.

Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
A future Hall of Famer printing plate (and a player from my school) for that price? A no-brainer addition. Simple as that ... and I grabbed others with it, too. MUST'VE BEEN CHEAP
The Card:
Latrell Sprewell 2003-04 SP Game Used Authentic Fabrics
The Price:
$1.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I picked up this card long ago and it's for one it's due to school ties (I try to get an auto and mem card for every pro if they have them) but mostly because it was dirt cheap. This design feels a little over-done down low with all that type, but, overall, I still couldn't not grab it for the price.

HOW MANY NAMES AGO?
The Card:
Johnny Nitro 2006 Topps Heritage WWE II Autographs
The Price:
Under $5 (part of a bulk lot)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This veteran debuted with AEW this month with yet another new name, Johnny Elite, and that comes on the heels of these other surnames -- Hennigan (real name), Morrison, Impact, Mundo and, believe it or not, almost 10 others. It's his gimmick now for sure but what I like about this card is, one, that was his first certified auto. I found this in a bulk lot of hits I landed quite a long time ago. I liked that deal, too. He's appeared in so many promotions and you can find him with many of those names on cards. A second reason I like this? His second certified auto from Topps didn't have this name (he was Johnny Morrison by then) so that also makes this one a little more interesting.

CHAIRMAN'S THREADS
The Card:
Whitey Ford 2004 Leaf Certified Materials Fabric of the Game AL (/100) and 2006 Upper Deck Epic Materials Light Orange (/155)
The Price:
About $30 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of memorabilia cards has been in my stash for a long time now as I picked them up after he died in the fall of 2020. One (Certified) is from a set I buy from often with a nice flannel piece, while the other is from an older but clearly newer piece with a pinstripe. I couldn't decide on which one to get at the time, so I did both, though my trends of buys since then clearly show I lean Certified.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO ...
The Card:
Jason Hervey 2010 TRISTAR TNA Xtreme Gold parallel (/10)
The Price:
$4
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
No, the older brother from The Wonder Years or the kid from the past from Back To The Future (Marty McFly's uncle if I remember correctly) didn't fight for TNA/Impact! Wrestling -- he was a behind-the-scenes executive producer helping bring segments and shows to life. With TRISTAR's comprehensive card sets that meant base cards and even autographs. I grabbed this since it was a rare parallel and was perhaps cheaper than you might think it should be based on the few made.

IT'S STANLEY CUP SEASON!
The Card:
The Goon 2018 Topps Legends of the WWE Blue Autographs (/25)
The Price:
$6.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
It's prime hockey time right now but this is about all I've got for new stuff on that front and it's a rarer parallel auto for a memorably bad WWE gimmick for wrestler Bill Irwin. It didn't last that long -- less than a year in 1996-1997 -- but that didn't stop him from getting a certified autograph deal in this release that had a ton of surprises.

ODD-THREAD APPEAL
The Card:
Joe Morgan 1984 Fleer Update
The Price:
Under $1
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is from a rarer and iconic 1980s release that's the home of some big cards but this one showing the Hall of Famer in his final big-league stop always stands out to me. The price here is low I think and that was just a bonus. Morgan had 1985 cards in his A's uniform, too, but this is perhaps the nicest of them all.
