Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

A HISTORY LESSON
The Cards: Huck Betts, Joe Oeschger & Whitey Glazner 2019 Historic Autographs Triple Play Cut Signatures Triple Play Booklet ... plus 1961 Topps Leon Cadore & Joe Oeschger (Brooklyn-Boston Play 26-Inning Tie) from the Baseball Thrills subset
The Price: $21 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I'm not exactly sure what sparked my going down the rabbit hole to end up finding this one -- whether it was some trivia about the game or just a search of cut autographs I'm not sure as I found this earlier this year -- but for something different without breaking the bank this cardboard duo was worth a lead-off spot this time. As the Topps card details, on May 1, 1920, the Brooklyn Robins and Boston Braves played 26 innings to a 1-1 tie that ended due to darkness and that's still an MLB record. Cadore and Oeschger both pitched all 26 innings -- think about that a minute -- and that's their only Topps card appearance. As for the cut, Oeschger gets the center spot with an inscription for that game, while Betts was a rookie in 1920 for the Phillies and Glazner was a rookie for the Pirates later that year. Why are all three on this cut auto book? I'm not totally sure ... but all three did pitch for the Phillies at some point so it could be that beyond 1920 highlights. The center auto here is the key to me ... that's some good trivia.

UPSIDE DOWN, DUDE ...
The Item:
The Dude in The Big Lebowski McFarlane Toys Movie Maniacs (/6,900)
The Price:
$24.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This really was gonna tie the room together, man, but an oddity here means I'm actually not going to open the sealed package this time. I ordered this one via a chain store and was surprised when it arrived -- look closely and you'll see the face in the background was actually inserted into the package upside down (compare the blue image on the front to the background). The other "bonus item" in this is a somewhat unimpressive sticker, so I can leave it all sealed. There's no mystery other than maybe what serial-number it might be ... I can live with that and this packaging botch making it different than most copies.

THREE OF A KIND ...
The Cards:
Dwayne Johnson as The Champion -- 2000 Rittenhouse Star Trek Voyager: Tsunkatse Archive Collection (/999)
The Price:
About $55 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This trio of 5-by-7 cards isn't one you will see every day as there were only 999 serial-numbered sets made and issued as part of a five-card numbered set. I landed two of the three with matching numbers and then tracked down the third to complete those showing The Rock during a Trek cameo years ago. (The other two show Jeri Ryan.) Here's the scene ... and the reason I grabbed these was the price was better than it would be to grab a set and I think these are his only cards for this appearance.

A TEEN-AGE PHENOM?
The Cards: Ryan Williams 2024 Bowman U Now (announced at /2,962)
The Price: $19 via Topps.com
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This card's photo is one I'm really, really not a fan of -- it's too stiff and too distant -- but it was his first Now card and it spotlights his two-score debut and his unusual age as a star for the Crimson Tide. I grabbed this pair figuring he'd probably have others (he does from after this) but since this was the first that was my deciding reason. One arrived with a bad corner, while the other (maybe) at some point will get slabbed for my school ties part of my collection.

WELCOME TO THE INK PIT ...
The Cards:
Shotzi Blackheart assorted Topps and Panini America WWE autographs and auto-mem parallels
The Price:
Between $10 and $65
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Dollars-wise, this is probably the biggest entry here this time thanks to the tie-dye parallel (/25) and a couple other rarer parallel colors here for this colorful WWE star who I'm actively collecting. Why am I buying more lately? Well, she's been out with an injury so prices have dropped down less than where they've been at times in the past. For example, the two Prizm cards out of the three I have added as seen here? They were just $10 a pop. Some of these are in graders' hands now as I type this so you'll see them here again in Making The Grade at some point, but for now I figured I'd just drop them all in one slot. Why? There will always be more later ...

RAZOR SHARP ...
The Card:
Ken Stabler 1975 Topps (BGS Authentic Altered)
The Price:
$21
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card is so, so clean that, well, I couldn't pass it up despite its altered slab notation. What's the alteration? I'm not sure -- there was nothing obvious -- so there's a chance that some trimming could have been done. (It's not easy to accurately measure in a case.) I'd buy a lot of altered cards from the vintage realm if they looked this good.

PROPS TO THIS ONE ...
The Cards:
White Pine Bay's Newspaper -- 2016 Breygent Bates Motel Season 2 Prop Cards & 2016 Breygent Bates Motel Season 2 Rest In Peace base card
The Price:
$15.65
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This prop card (bottom) has a piece of a newspaper used in a scene from this Psycho TV prequel and that by itself was enough to get me to look -- but it was a no-brainer to grab when I spotted a base card (top) showing the sam paper in a scene -- and on that, if you look closely, you can see the same paragraph on that card (right) that's embedded on the cut piece in this particular memorabilia card. I probably overpaid a bit but I didn't mind in this case. I'm sure it's not a 1/1 scenario (there were likely multiple newspapers cut up to make cards as printed materials would have extras made just because the nature of the item and how it could be damaged easily on set) but I still think it's cool.

DORN!
The Card:
Corbin Bernsen 2024 Leaf Pop Century Metal Pink Autograph Pre-Production Proof (1/1)
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These proofs can be super cheap as there are a number of colors and textures for every card in this one -- just like in the product -- but with this photo straight off the Major League 2 poster and/or promotional materials I bit on a Roger Dorn 1/1 with ease.

INSTANTLY INTERESTED
The Cards:
Tiffany Stratton 2024 Panini Instant WWE (10-pack /274) & Kelani Jordan (/85)
The Price:
About $64
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was a follow-up order to my pair of Tiffy Time Instant buys seen here last time. I did a 10-pack for the standard card -- meaning that's a whopping 3.6 percent of the print run right there -- but to get free shipping that meant I needed to add one other (or pay even more than what I paid here without it). I opted for the second Instant card of a rather-notable NXT newcomer and it turned out to be a relatively rare card once the orders were in. The Jordan may end up being the better buy over time as Stratton has a lot of cards and Jordan is still new to things and was arguably under-ordered.

GANG'S ALL HERE? (ALMOST.)
The Card:
"Anybody Got A Candy Bar?" 2024 UD The Goonies Black & White Variant
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This online release has a lot of simple throwback-style cards as well as character-based inserts that showcase a number of the young stars in this classic on solo cards. This parallel is one that shows a good part of the group and merely cost me change to grab. Why? I wanted to see how the printing and cutting quality was on this one as well as the stock. Both were clean ... so I may scout and slab some simple cards among those in this release. Why? Just for some novelty slabs and they will be far cleaner and more grading-friendly than the original Topps cards for this classic.

A UNIQUE AUTO?
The Item:
Alice Candelaria signed 1978 Pittsburgh Pirates payroll check also signed by Pirates Co-General Manager Joseph O'Toole & Pirates Treasurer Douglas McCormick
The Price:
$4.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was among a small lot of signed payroll checks I recently found from the 1970s Pittsburgh Pirates -- nothing too pricey or obscure and, in fact, they'd been sitting on eBay for a long time for anybody to find. This was among a number of cheap options and the first thing that actually caught my attention was the "replaces" notation on the bottom left -- I don't know why but it did -- and then, of course Candelaria can't be that common of a name. (These checks can be found paid to all kinds of people, not just the players.) Out of curiosity, I checked to see if John Candelaria happened to be on the 1978 team and he was. (I know his name, of course, but really only remembered him among my commons later in his career.) Out of curiosity, I searched his name and this name and found the press photo at right -- so, yes, this is a replacement paycheck signed by his first ex-wife. (His story here touches on everything on the field, including ups -- a strong postseason pitcher as a rookie in 1975, a no-hitter in 1976, an All-Star in 1977 and a World Series champ in 1979 -- and downs. Among those? He apparently received his divorce papers from his second ex-wife during a game.) Candy Man had an interesting career for sure, but a player's paycheck signed by an ex-wife actually is way up there for interesting and weird items in my autograph collection.

SEASON'S OVER ...
The Cards:
Spencer Strider & Michael Harris II assorted Topps parallels, small-release cards and a Relic
The Price:
Around $15 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This small group of stuff was mostly grabbed before this past season or early on as I figured print runs these days are at the point where, as a collector, I can just wait it out and grab stuff I like on the cheap later if it strikes me. Most of the cost here was for the Relic and the two Black & White inserts since I think I grabbed those early in their lifespan (closer to release) because I liked them. The rest were really cheap adds -- and both of these guys have been stars (who have also been sidelined) at times for a popular team so they likely had been pricier before. I'll probably keep hunting this way until box prices hit slasher sales, people get bored with stuff or the SRPs/starting points perhaps become more reasonable. If they don't, I'll just end up with what I want anyway ... and probably with less spending. (I'm not sure that's sparking the growth that card companies say they want ... but I don't think I'm alone. Here's hoping the collector base sticks for, say, a decade from now.)

NEXT STOP? SLABBING ...
The Mag:
Jose Canseco -- Sports Illustrated, Oct. 17, 1988 (newsstand copy) ... also first cover
The Price:
About $11 shipped
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was his first cover and among the first issues I ever landed when I first got a subscription all those years ago. Unlike cards that got protected and preserved in my stash, my copy of this one ended up cut out and tacked on a wall -- probably with a practiced fake signature from me for my favorite player added -- and that was that. Landing a crisp and clean copy of this has been on my mental list for years as ultimately I want a crisp high-grade copy in a slab ... but I don't want to pay the $500 asking price for a 9.8 online now. This one needs pressing and probably wouldn't get a 9.8 but I think it will go in next year ... I can live with a 9-up mark for this one. It's not my favorite magazine cover for my favorite player from back then ... but it's close and it's his first SI cover.

POP CULTURE GPKs
The Cards:
Kevin Smith as Silent Bob, Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall and The Breakfast Club gang on Garbage Pail Kids homages
The Price:
About $5.25 total (mostly for the Club card)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The three set names are long here, so you'll just have to get out the Google machine to track them down (or just hit eBay) for the three different releases that these base stickers are from, but they're examples of where GPK can get my attention easiest -- nods to elsewhere in pop culture -- vs. generic gross-out characters. The Smith is from a set dedicated to his whole realm of characters, while the other two fall within more genre-focused releases.

THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS
The Item:
Kevin Sullivan (with The Fallen Angel) autographed 8-by-10 photo (via The Wrestling Universe)
The Price:
About $10.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pro wrestling veteran and enigma recently died at age 74 after complications and issues from an auto accident earlier this year and while his biggest place in wrestling was out of the spotlight for years now and even then more behind-the-scenes, Sullivan got a New York Times obituary after the news hit. Little Buzz first got into wrestling in the mid/late 1980s and it was in all the "other" wrestling mags where characters like him and his Army of Darkness -- not the types seen on TV and as toys in the WWE -- well, they creeped this kid out. "What was a cult?" Little Buzz probably learned that word here and this character personified it to me and that was the point of his group ... to bring some creepy into the wrestling realm. That's a formula that's still around today. As the Times put it, though, "Sullivan was inspired by heavy metal acts popular in the 1970s and '80s like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to become the 'Prince of Darkness,' a demonic rival of some of the stars of that era, including Dusty Rhodes, the Road Warriors and [Hulk] Hogan." I wasn't totally sure if I had ink for him these days, so I grabbed this modestly priced photo from those earlier, creepier years along with The Fallen Angel, his then-wife, Nancy, who has a different, real and sad tale of her own.

REAL NAMES
The Card:
Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther 2022 Upper Deck Marvel Allure Yellow Taxi
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This set is one I have mentioned a few times over in Making The Grade where I have slabbed a couple cards for this actor and this character. This was an earlier pick-up than those cards, though, and it never got graded as the centering here wasn't good enough (along with some other small details) for slabbing in my book once I got it in-hand. I don't mind a lot of the design touches found on these cards between all of the colors, textures and variety and they're not expensive most of the time, which is also a plus.

BIG BO ... TIMES TWO
The Cards:
Bo Bichette 2023 Topps Heritage jumbo box-topper & 2023 Topps Stadium Club Master Photo
The Price:
About $6.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of box-toppers for a player I actively collect shows how cheap things can get when seasons don't go that well ... but that won't stop me from digging in if I like them. I'm generally open to anything Heritage as long as it's printed cleanly (not always the case) and the Club got me with the all-red uni -- those are striking.

CYBER MONDAY THROWBACK
The Card:
Nick Swisher 2015 Panini Elite Cyber Monday (/7)
The Price:
$8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I don't keep track of my buys here like I should for my favorite player, but it looks like I have tracked down at least three of the seven copies of this card that exist ... without even realizing it. This is a simple stamped promo pack card for Cyber Monday pack-rippers back in the day. I only found out I had three while digging through my info to find what I paid ... someday my cards will be organized. Maybe.

FOUR NEW (OLD) DREW
The Items:
Drew Barrymore 1992-93 press photo slides & one from the late-1990s
The Price:
About $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This simple lot of slides caught my attention with a look that didn't seem to last long (bottom two with dark hair) and then the top left one (more standard look back then) all coming together. The autograph one is from a little later and I found it separately, but as an autograph collector seeing a signing happening is something different that can be found in the slide realm from time to time.

ROCKY ... WITH A ROLLER MARK
The Card:
Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa 1979 Topps Rocky II Stickers
The Price:
Pocket change
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card looked nearly perfect in the COMC world and I came really, really, really close to slabbing it more than a few times as I liked that look along with the duality of the famous reel-world boxer playing a little stickball. But it also seemed too good to be true and I feared that maybe a black marker had been recruited to clean things up ... so I had it delivered. There aren't any alterations that I could see, but there is a roller mark (super-minor indentions but no color loss) right across the front just above/below his face. I'm not sure how much that might hurt a grade but otherwise this looks really strong and a high-grade card from the era ... especially with its centering.

THROWBACK FROM THE VAULT
The Item:
Steve Swisher circa 1976 Topps Vault original negative
The Price:
$15.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The Topps Vault doesn't seem to be a thing any more, but for years beginning in 2001 there were countless treasures used in the making of past card sets sold off by the company. Why? Old-timers who perhaps already have everything don't mind more oddball stuff if it suits their collections and it was another revenue stream making them good money. Contracts, proofs, negatives, sheets and more made their way into collectors' hands and this is an example of photo negatives that had sat in envelopes for years, if not decades, before hitting the auction block. These are encased atop a blank card with a code affixed to the backer so it's best to not remove them ... otherwise I would have better visuals here. They don't photograph all that well but for this player collector (and a collector of his dad's stuff, too) this was an easy addition to go with a number of others like it that I already own -- for both of them.

ON THE COVER OF A MAGAZINE
The Mags:
Roxanne Perez, Trish Stratus, Eddie Guerrero, Randy Orton, Ric Flair, FiFi The Maid (Wendy Barlow), The Road Warriors, The Fallen Angel, Abdullah The Butcher, Dusty Rhodes and others on assorted cast and present wrestling magazines -- Pro Wrestling Illustrated, WWE Magazine, Smackdown Magazine, WCW Magazine, Wrestling Superstars, Wrestling All-Stars & Championship Wrestling (1980s to 2024)
The Price:
Just under $10 apiece on average
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This grouping is just some cleaning out my waiting list for a spot here -- some are recent grabs, some aren't, but they pretty much span my earliest wrestling mag buys to even first covers among current days. The PWI year-in-review issue was my first I ever found and this is a fresh copy likely going in a slab next year, while that Road Warriors cover was also one I know I owned back then but it didn't survive. Others here are first or early covers and the two black-and-white takes are examples where past mags showcased the famed Crimson Mask heavily. The Wrestling All-Stars mag is not only a first cover for The Fallen Angel -- it actually pre-dates her first wrestling appearance as that photo shoot is reportedly what got her foot in the door to be in the business. A few of these might end up graded.

I FORGOT THAT DETAIL
The Item:
Marisa Tomei, Lisa Bonet & Dawnn Lewis on A Different World NBC promotional photo (1987)
The Price:
About $6.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This Cosby Show spin-off lasted six seasons and I'm sure I watched a few of them as much of NBC was pretty much on my TV radar back then ... but what got me to stop and look here was something I didn't remember. Hillman College? Yep. Bonet? Sure. Even Lewis I recognized ... but I didn't remember her name. But Marisa Tomei? I didn't remember her on this show -- and there's probably a reason. She was only on the series in its first season and after that the series was revamped with cast changes as Bonet was out as well -- check out the trivia nuggets here. Also, could you imagine Meg Ryan in Tomei's spot? That apparently almost happened. Why was Bonet off the show after the first year? Zoë Kravitz was on the way and Bill Cosby didn't think that was good for the story of the long-running TV character. (Check out this piece for more on the show.) I didn't realize this was a first-season photo when I grabbed it, but all this makes it even more interesting.

A THREE-CARD THROWBACK
The Item:
Nick Swisher (and others) 2008 Topps Heritage Ad panel (in a pack)
The Price:
$8
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I grabbed this as an unopened pack (the wrapper is transparent enough to know what's inside) and I should have left it that way -- but when it arrived with some iffy packaging I needed to open it and see how things looked. What happened? Well, it was mailed with cardboard (that could bend) on just one side and in an envelope with a metal clasp I was worried about creases and surface dents. The clasp rubbed against and dented the wrapper to the point of damage while in the mail. Did it affect the card? If you look closely at the pink on the Ruiz on the bottom left above the logo you can see what happened. It, surprisingly, wasn't otherwise damaged. Stuff like this can happen ... though it shouldn't.

I'D THROW THESE BACK ...
The Mags:
The Rock, Ken Shamrock, Hulk Hogan, Vader, Dallas Page, Kimberly Page and Papa Shango (and the Ultimate Warrior, I guess) on four assorted The Wrestler, Inside Wrestling and Wrestle America magazines as part of a mystery pack direct via Pro Wrestling Illustrated
The Price:
$41 shipped
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This fearsome foursome was what I found in a $30 (now $40) vintage wrestling magazines "mystery pack" direct from basically the only name left in the game, Pro Wrestling Illustrated. They've got plenty of old magazines in storage to help spark a revenue stream on their site with these and at least one other (newer) option beyond sales of their core title. The names I landed here are, for the most part, big with The Rock perhaps the best one here but they're more low-rent titles (see the "Photoshop" on that Shango cover and the tacky flaming type on the Rock). Atop that, the acids in the paper used for the guts of these magazines aren't friendly all these years later -- see the UPC codes on the two left covers ... that's the cover discoloring from aging. They're otherwise clearly archives copies and that's fine/cool but as a collector I was more optimistic about condition going in. At the same time, check eBay and you'll still probably find way junkier stuff costing more ... so it's all a matter of taste. I thought this might make for a decent little filler Buzz Break item on a slow day ... but it arrived months ago and I'm only tossing it in here as some end-of-year desk-clearing. (It's an option if you like mystery boxes, though.)

SHE'S BACK
The Card:
Raquel Rodriguez 2022 Panini Impeccable WWE Stainless Stars (/99)
The Price:
About $5.50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This younger WWE star has been out of action with an autoimmune illness called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and was out so long and off the radar that I actually thought she had retired. This was in my stash of pick-ups from long ago (maybe even last year) waiting for a spot here, so with her back and aligned with The Judgment Day as the new muscle for the women's world champ now we're here. I picked this up with a curious eye on how these metal cards might look in-hand. This was fine -- if peeled -- but they're definitely not as grading friendly as one might think as metal cards.

Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This RC from a thick-stock brand is one I have picked off a few times now -- regular and at least one parallel color, maybe more -- with an eye for grading one ... but it just hasn't made the cut yet. After his rough 2024 I may just be able to find already-slabbed copies on the cheap ... but there's a possibility I may slab some in 2025.

THIS MONTH IN 1993
The Item:
Mariah Carey Here Is Mariah Carey NBC promotional photo (Nov. 25, 1993 special)
The Price:
$5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This promo photo from relatively early in her career (first album dropped in 1990) was bargain-priced and pretty clean other than a couple of marginal crop marks on the front and a grease pen park for her name on the back so I bit. Why? I thought it was an oddly interesting photo as it was released for a Thanksgiving TV event -- one that was watched by 19 million people -- but was actually taped, per the info on the back, months earlier. Why the delay? No idea, but perhaps it's just another way that we can see times have changed ... just like printing out photos and mailing them to media with a sticker of info popped onto the backs. Now? That'd be an email with an attachment or just something posted online immediately -- either as an image or preview video. Of course, info and images would also be online from attendees in real time unless they were not allowed to do that. Another way times have changed? The special also arrived on VHS the following week ... remember VCRs?

SOME BIG NAMES ...
The Item:
Girl, Interrupted (1999) press kit with 10 8-by-10 photos featuring Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Brittany Murphy, Jeffrey Tambor, Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave, James Mangold and others.
The Price:
$12
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was among a few kits I picked up all at once and that price is a smidge above what I'd normally pay for one of these, but the volume of clean photos here was really good with a number of notables. This 1999 film was based on a 1993 book where the author explored her experiences from time at a psychiatric hospital in the 1960s. The cast is strong here -- and that makes for some strong promo photos -- and Jolie won an Oscar for this one.

Cora Jade assorted 2022 Rookie Card parallels, 2023 inserts and a 2023 Panini Select WWE Sparks memorabilia card

About $21 (half of that for the memorabilia card)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This young NXT star is back from a pair of injuries that had really derailed things for her -- she had been in and around main-event stories and talent twice -- but that time away really slowed my buying of stuff and she was pretty pricey when she first arrived so that didn't help, either. Her earlier looks for her character also evolved -- you can see the differences here from, say, Revolution to Select, but there's a lot to choose from. I picked off a few things here and there and like the Raquel Rodriguez card they'd just sat for me to find a spot here. She, too, is back and also is back in and round the main event picture again ... so we'll see how it goes. Will I pick off more stuff? I'd like to, but the price has to be right as there are a lot of younger notables in the NXT and other WWE ranks that are competing for collector dollars right now.

Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This last lot is a section of autos from a New York shop that regularly has in-store signings and this group is some from a sale around this time last year and them some more recently where they were burning off stuff wit some strong prices. There are only perhaps a couple of bigger names here for WWE, one more known for international work and then some newcomers. Most wrestling autos aren't tough finds -- they regularly do signings -- so one can collect and power shop at sales time. Hornswoggle was a high-profile name during his long WWE run (should be a Hall of Famer) with the second photo from a comical Little People's Court promo in 2009 where D-Generation X finally paid the price for their long-running mistreatment of their aspiring D-X member which is prosecuted in that lengthy bit and then has a pay-off. (It's totally dumb but memorable -- and that was D-X's aim then.) McKay is now in NXT as Kelly Kincaid, Cameron is lighting it up on AEW as an eccentric teammate of Saraya -- whose mom is Saraya Knight seen here. Generally, none of them have a bunch of certified autos so that's why I added them this way.
