Buzz buys and busts a lot of boxes right here for Buzz Breaks, but one of my goals is to rip a little less and talk more about cardboard that I -- and you -- might like. One way to do that? Simple show and tell -- present a few pick-ups and say why they captured my attention.

So, with all that said, here are a few Buzz Buys ...

--

SOMETHING SIMPLE ...
The Card: Shaun Alexander 2000 EX NFL Debut Postmarks
The Price: $7.75
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is a throwback leading off because I have a simple question to present with it ... have we seen anything like this recently? As you can see, this card has a stamp affixed to a card with a postmark applied on the day of his NFL debut, which was in Miami. It's a simple kind of non-traditional card -- I don't think I'd call it a hit -- but something like this could mix things up a bit. Sure, there's a little extra work involved here but ... something different in packs that can be done for pocket change wouldn't hurt, right?

SLOWING PICKING THEM OFF ...
The Card:
Tiffany Stratton 2022 Panini Prizm WWE Silver Prizms -- RC parallel
The Price:
$10
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was my first Prizm WWE pick-up -- a simple parallel for one of the numerous newcomers from NXT 2.0 and elsewhere in this huge base set who have had zero -- not one ... zero -- cards before. Why? The introduction of NXT 2.0 happened quickly and nearly all of these new kids to WWE who hadn't been in wrestling before let alone on TV were held for (or just by happenstance) the first release of the new WWE licensee. Why did I wait? Well, the hype train had a lot of stuff very pricey here at first but the reality is that the numbered cards will be the rarer and pricier stuff here and not that much else since there's just so much cardboard in every hobby box of this one. With many flippers chasing the bigs, that means there's a lot of other stuff that should surface up for grabs. Prices for this card have softened and I'll still be looking for more (and others) but it's not as high on my radar as it might have been had it been a cheap and affordable debut release. To me, it's the newcomers that matter in this one -- not the Hogan, Rock, Austin and Warrior types who already have plenty of cards.

BEST INK IN THE GAME?
The Autograph: Ted Giannoulas aka The San Diego Chicken autographed 8-by-10 Panini VIP Party photo
The Price: Under $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This autograph is perhaps the finest in all of sports -- it's certainly not foul, I know that -- so when I saw this VIP item on the cheap I figured I'd grab one. My only other pieces for this mascot legend are an in-person auto signed on an early 1980s Donruss card (it was cheap and the penmanship proved it was real) and then a memorabilia card from the recent Donruss years.

GOING BO-VERBOARD? (NAH.)
The Cards:
Bo Bichette various 2020-2021 Topps & Panini America Rookie Cards, parallels and over-sized inserts
The Price:
$1 and up ...
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This guy has been on my radar but he's too pricey for me to seriously dig in beyond some basics and a hit here and there. No big deal -- I'm good with a single auto in my stash along with a bunch of slabs and other stuff. Initially, I started trying to pick off all his basic RCs but I never finished the project. Then I opted for some of his box-toppers and then other cards that caught my attention. It's a very casual stash.

COLLECTING ICONS
The Mag:
Kurt Cobain -- Entertainment Weekly April 22, 1994
The Price:
$19.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Buzz must have been feeling richer here -- 0r perhaps it was part of a lot where the more I bought I got a discount -- but this is one of those historic times where a mainstream mag might meet a slab. Why? Cobain doesn't have a lot of cardboard appearances but has a big place in music history. I've been focusing on building up some items (mags and autographs) from notables from the 1990s and 2000s because there's just not as much stuff out there. Many of them won't need the money to sign for card companies or will have auto asking prices too high to realistically make easily findable autos happen. This one wasn't as clean as I had hoped but it should be graded at some point after some other stuff. Why? A lot of collectors stick to the sports realm but there are a lot of them out there with those mags. My gut says not as many collectors saved non-sports mags like this.

PREMIUM PIECES
The Card:
Corey Kluber 2017 Topps Definitive Collection Jumbo Relic Collection (/50)
The Price:
$4
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is a Mother's Day pink jersey patch card from a very high-end brand where you feel that just from the stock, gloss, foil and other design choices. I'm not a Klubot fan or anything, but I liked the card for the price. You can look up the MLB Authentication code and see that this one was from a jersey used on May 8, 2016 -- ironically a 5-4 Indians win over the Royals where ... he didn't play. It happens for pitchers ... but he wore it during the game.

A GRAB-BAG FIND
The Card:
Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis 2013 Upper Deck Marvel Thor: The Dark World Dark Materials (dual)
The Price:
Not sure ... was in a grab bag (likely well under $10)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was a surprise find in a non-sports grab bag/repack I picked up long ago -- now this card has an asking price over $50 on one site where I looked -- and it was among a few hits I landed on the cheap. The others weren't all that notable so they didn't even get set aside for photos to be seen here, but this Two Broke Girls star's card is one where I would have bought it outright if the price was right. It was a good find.

TO GRADE OR NOT TO GRADE ...
The Card:
Princess Leia Organa 2017 Topps Star Wars High Tek Pattern 1 Gold Rainbow Foil (/50)
The Price:
Under $5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Plastic-stock cards like this can make for easy grading as long as there are no obvious surface flaws and I picked this one up since it was on the rarer side of things, cheap and a notable character in the Star Wars galaxy. It's been in my maybe-grade pile for some time and I probably will at some point.

A PIECE OF THE LOGO ...
The Card:
Rashad Evans 2011 Topps UFC Finest Jumbo Fight Mat Relics
The Price:
Under $6
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The details here make jumbo mat cards like this interesting to me. The card tells you when it was from -- UFC Fight Night 8 -- and that lets you go do the homework to see where the logo is likely from on the mat. This one? You can see it right here. It's nothing dramatic but I like stuff like this. I have others where you can see it's from the heart of the Octagon.

ANOTHER ICON
The Mag:
Richard Pryor -- People Weekly March 13, 1978
The Price:
$9.99
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Like some of my other recent magazine pick-ups, this one struck me as iconic but not because I'm some fan of 1970s comedy that's as old as I am but because of a simple thought or two. First, who was saving People from this timeframe? Sure, they're out there and they aren't all that rare but this one looks pretty clean compared to a lot of mags on the market from even a few years ago, let alone a few decades. Second, it would look good in a slab. This one isn't perfect but I may slab it, too, as simple bold covers can present well ... and what does he have beyond some Superman III cards? Not a lot ...

AND THE IICONICS
The Cards:
Peyton Royce & Billie Kay assorted debut-year cards/parallels and autographs
The Price:
$2 up to about $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This duo recently decided to take a hiatus from wrestling to try and chase some acting roles and that gave me an easy reason to cough up these last few cards I had stashed here and there. The cards at right I just wanted to have a matching auto set and and example of Royce's new, abbreviated "PeyRo" autograph that maybe was a sign of some changes to come for her character. (Maybe?) The center two are parallels from a very grading-friendly brand (Undisputed) from their debut year and then the ink and others are early cards from the standalone NXT sets that are plagued by skinny stock but loaded with debuts. I'm pretty sure they'll be back wrestling to some degree at some point -- most never leave -- but they are a classic duo.

A DYNAMIC DUO
The Autographs:
Penta Zero Miedo & Rey Fénix autographed 8-by-10 Republic of Lucha promo photo
The Price:
$15
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
These two Mexican wrestling stars and brothers are high-flying and energetic stars for AEW who have been in the ring for some time -- more than 15 years -- and that means a lot of fans. They own a wrestling store, Republic of Lucha, in South Pasadena, Calif., where one can find all kinds of merch for the craft as well as artwork, match-used stuff, autographs and more for them as well as other stars who have entertained fans around the world. I recently grabbed this and a couple other autos from their site and have others I still want to get. Why? The price is right, I know it's legit coming from them and they don't have a whole lot of cardboard that's readily available. For now, I'll dabble with stuff like this vs. pricier sticker autos.

TOOK THE RISK
The Autographs:
Grindhouse Blu-Ray DVD slipcase signed by Robert Rodriguez, Vanessa Furlito, Rosario Dawson, Kurt Russell, Michael Parks and Will Arnett
The Price:
$50
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This was an unusual discovery and I bit despite it not being an authenticated piece. I'm pretty confident everything here is legit based on who signed and how stuff isn't exactly perfect in penmanship or placement (and the slipcase isn't in the best of shape as it had to have been a project piece), but since Death Proof is among my favorite movies I had to grab it. I wasn't quite able to figure out an obvious event where all of the signers were together to perhaps sign after the Blu-Ray arrival but the draws for me are are Rodriguez (top), Dawson (bottom left) and Russell (bottom right, black ink) and then Parks (small top auto right side) who died in 2017. The bottom right auto was a serious mystery for me and I had to do some deep IMDb digging to figure it out. Arnett did voiceovers for the Don't trailer between the two main films. It's not a perfect item but landing a Dawson auto would cost me this much if not more alone and Parks is in a lot of films where he stole the show.

ANOTHER UNIQUE CARD
The Card:
Shaun Alexander 2000 Fleer Showcase Touch Football -- rookie-year memorabilia card
The Price:
$5.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This is another simple kind of card where I wonder why we haven't seen something similar to it over the years. The swatch here appears to be from one of the top two fingerprints right by the seam on the ball. If I had to bet, based on size, the second finger down from the top is in this card. It was way too cheap in my mind considering the uniqueness and the matched spot but I also grabbed it since he was a star player during my time in college. I've met him and gotten him to sign stuff a few times (long ago) so he's big in my school ties part of my stash. I was happy with this find.

SHE'S BACK ...
The Cards:
Asuka 2016 Topps WWE NXT base and Bronze (/50) -- WWE debut-year cards
The Price:
Less than $10 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This product was released with an auto in every pack -- a one pack per box -- with an initial online-only release and with a ton of early cards for stars inside. These have really seemed to dry up in recent years -- or I think there may be a stockpile of packs out there somewhere -- but awhile back I grabbed a few parallels and cards for some key names. There's no RC or First NXT Card logo here but these are from Asuka's first year of WWE cards ... so that makes them a little more notable in my book. The skinny stock on these showcase flaws really easy so if you're a grader like me beware ... there can be bummers buying these cards.

SIMPLE SLABS ...
The Check:
Joe Sewell autographed personal check (BAS authenticated)
The Price:
Under $25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This Hall of Famer is not that tough of an auto -- on photos or checks -- but when they're slabbed these have gotten me to bite. (I own two, maybe three, since he's in the school ties part of my stash and my only Cooperstown guy to collect there.) The slabs look good and showcase the piece well. He made his MLB debut weeks after the death of Ray Chapman due to a hit by pitch and was a mainstay in the majors the 13 seasons after that somber beginning. He was with the Indians most of his career but finished with the team he debuted against, the Yankees. The joined the Cooperstown ranks in 1977 and died in 1990.

PARENTAL INK ...
The Cards:
Ashley Crow & Matthew John Armstrong 2010 Rittenhouse Heroes Archives Autographs
The Price:
Less than $10 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Fun trivia time ... these two are the parents of Chicago Cubs prospect and former first-round draft pick Pete Crow-Armstrong -- and they all have certified autographs thanks to work in TV or on the baseball field. As Mel Allen used to say ... "How about that?"

THREE OF A KIND
The Cards:
Walt Alston 1973 Topps (with Jim Gilliam & Tommy Lasorda among others) & Tommy Lasorda 2005 Leaf Certified Materials Fabric of the Game (/100) & 2005 Donruss Greats Blues Materials Brooklyn Dodgers
The Price:
About $20
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This trio of cards were pick-ups after this Hall of Famer's death last year. The 1973 card is, I think, the first standard card made during his second career (as a coach and then manager) for the Dodgers. The memorabilia cards seem unusual -- a manager mem card doesn't seem like the norm looking back at those years -- but he actually has more than 200 different cards and even some from before these. I grabbed them thinking they were close to the only options.

RETRO CHARMS
The Card:
Miesha Tate 2013 Topps UFC Bloodlines Octagon-side
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I liked the vintage look of this one and the card is pretty well-centered, too, considering how narrow those borders are. I grabbed this just to dabble with some UFC slabbing but it actually arrived with a small creased corner, knocking out those visions quickly. Her earliest cards are in 2011 releases so this isn't some early or key card ... I just liked the feel of it -- it's a nod to the 1951 Topps Ringside set that had boxing stars and a few wrestlers on its checklist.

CERAMIC CARDS?
The Cards:
The Empire Strikes Back & Return Of The Jedi 1994 Score Board Star Wars Posters (/5,000)
The Price:
Less than $5 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I'm not totally sure of the origin of these, which are a little over-sized and ceramic pieces that are hand-numbered reproductions of film posters. They were so cheap I grabbed them as samples of some oddball pieces from the past you can find with some deep dives. I just wish I could have found the first film with them to have the trilogy.

IT'S TOPANGA!
The Mag:
Danielle Fishel -- Maxim, April 2013
The Price:
About $17 ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
I was a little too old or too busy in college for Boy Meets World when it arrived -- or at least never noticed it -- but one of its stars and main characters had a unique name that stuck once I heard it ... "Topanga." Among my finds for iconic 1990s and 2000s names on mags or signed items was this one and it jumped out from the pack as something of note (albeit after the series ran) that some fans might think was a cool slab. I found two of these still sealed in their newsstand bags and one of them is in CGC's hands now for grading. Why? Well, I hadn't thought about the show but I knew the name and remembered seeing this issue on some newsstand shelf long ago -- probably during a Target card run -- but I passed for something else. I thought this was a creative way for the mag to do its 16th birthday by checking in with some notables from TV/movies at that time.

"YOU GOT LUCKY, MIKE TROUT"
The Cards:
Brett Phillips 2017 Topps Update Vintage parallel (/99) & Update Mini parallel and 2017 Panini National Treasures Colossal Materials (/99)
The Price:
About $7.50 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
Everybody's favorite garbage-time relief pitcher is a guy who is with his fourth MLB franchise (third as a big-leaguer) but he's already played in a World Series and pitched in three big-league games, too. (It really seems like more.) His latest work came on the losing side of a no-hitter where he got shelled late (hence the quote) and that was enough for me to finally dig out these past pick-ups to show here. He only has a handful of actual RCs (Update, Chrome Update and a couple others) and I liked the appeal of the oldschool Vintage parallel here -- it was around $5 while the Mini was small pocket change and the mem card from a premium brand was under $2. I picked all of these up after his walk-off hit in the World Series ... so, yeah, a couple years ago now. I just felt like this was the time to throw these out there.

CLAY SAMPLES
The Card:
Gilles Simon 2008 Ace Authentic Matchpoint French Open Memorabilia
The Price:
$1.25
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
The French Open starts later this month and I grabbed this oddball mem card as it includes clay from the venue. I thought it was interesting for the price and he's actually from France for extra trivial bonus points. I don't have much else to add as I'm not a big tennis fan ... I'm just a fan of unusual memorabilia cards.

OVER THE BORDER
The Card:
Johnny Musso 1973 BC Lions Royal Bank photo card
The Price:
Around $5
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
He's a College Football Hall of Famer and a former NFL player (albeit in limited playing time) so most of his cardboard (at least that not in a Crimson Tide uniform) is from the Canadian Football League. "The Italian Stallion" signed there instead of playing for the Chicago Bears who drafted him in the third round. That Rocky-esque nickname is ironic considering the guy known as Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) was one of his teammates with the B.C. Lions.

OVER THE BORDER II
The Mag:
John Candy -- Marquee magazine, April 1985
The Price:
$12
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This one will be slabbed at some point. Why? It just jumped out at me as a strong piece of portrait photography for an iconic comedian and it will look really good graded no matter the mark -- and that should/could translate into a nice piece. Marquee is a Canadian magazine (I'm admittedly not very familiar with it to know if it's still running) and this copy was wafer thin with really light paper. This copy is nice, though and that skinny size makes me wonder how many might even still exist in any shape all these years later.

TWO SNAKE SKINS
The Card:
Ken Stabler 2013 UD Goodwin Champions Dual Memorabilia
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This card starts with a tweaked version of a memorable photo first seen on cardboard pack in the Pro Line days where "Snake" is holding a big snake wearing what looks like some Zubaz pants. Throw in a piece of a game-used jersey from his Raiders days as well as one from his Oilers days (two of his three NFL teams) and this one carries a pretty solid feel. Even more solid? That price.

TWO GAIJIN
The Cards:
Matt Keough & Leon Lee 1987 Play Ball Japanese baseball cards
The Price:
$5.75 total
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This pair of Japanese baseball cards isn't flashy at all -- I just grabbed them awhile back after learning some trivia. Keough played a decade in MLB and I'm sure I have some cards for him somewhere as a former Oakland A's guy, but he finished his career playing three seasons in Japan and what I didn't know were a few things. His dad? Big-leaguer. His uncle, too. One of his kids? Married to one of Brian Bosworth's nephews, who was a college football star who got an NFL shot. Another of his kids? Former MiLB player. His ex-wife? Former Playboy model Jeana Tomasino ... and I guess some of this all ties into The Real Housewives of Orange County. Didn't watch the show, of course, but that's a lot of name-drops. Meanwhile, Lee is the father of former MLB All-Star Derrek Lee but never made it to the majors after several seasons in the Angels system ... but he was a dominant player with a decade-long career in Japan where he hit .308 and had 268 homers and more than 1,400 hits. Two very different careers ... same card set.

NOT THE ACE
The Card:
Jimmy Kimmel 2016 Topps Chrome First Pitch Green Refractor (/99)
The Price:
$9
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This late-night host is one of a few notables away from MLB to have baseball cards and with the Chromes there are parallels. I ponied up a little bit on this -- it was long ago before these got hotter -- and I had an eye on grading this as an example of an oddball card. I think some surface flaw nixed those plans but I need to dig it out and give it a second look now with stuff like this selling better. I just picked it off because I think they're cool.

A GRAB-BAG FIND ...
The Autograph:
Leyla Hirsch autographed 8-by-10 photo (via HighSpots)
The Price:
Only a few bucks ... in a dealer grab bag
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This AEW star stands just 4-foot-11 but is a legit grappler who was a standout in high school and had a college scholarship before she chose to embark upon a pro career. But that's not the most-interesting thing here. Find the AEW Unrestricted podcast episode she's on and you can hear about her life before all that -- she was born in Moscow and lived in an orphanage with her sister until they were adopted by an American couple at age eight. She didn't make the cut for the debut AEW set so there isn't much to collect yet but finding her autographed photo in a HighSpots throw-in bag of bonus items with an order was a nice surprise. (Other stuff I found, well, I had no idea who they were.)

THE ARTIST'S RC
The Card:
Sam Shaw 2013 TRISTAR TNA Impact Wrestling Glory Red (/40) -- RC parallel
The Price:
Under $3
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
You may know him as Dexter Lumis from his recently finished WWE run that had some of the best comedic moments with his Aussie bride Indi Hartwell -- collectively they were known as "InDex." Before that, he was a serial-killer-ish "tortured artist" of few words (he's an actual artist with his caricatures of Impact stars in past TRISTAR card sets) and a stare that's both odd and amusing to go with awkward ax-wielding moments like at their wedding. He grew on me as part of InDex in recent months, so I picked off this rare parallel card for one of his few options back in his Impact days. That stuff is getting tougher to find, so I grabbed this given its scarcity.

INTERGALACTIC INK
The Autograph:
Mary McDonnell autographed Battlestar Galactica 8-by-10 photo (with Edward James Olmos)
The Price:
Under/around $20 via Wizard World Vault
Why it’s Buzz-worthy:
This series was one where I got onto it late in the DVD years owning all but one half-season in full. I liked it ... so much so I've dabbled with a few boxes of cards for the series in the past (pre-Buzz years) and then have dabbled here and there with autographs. McDonnell doesn't have the flashiest sig, but the photo was fine and the price was right to pick up this one via the show promotor's website.
