BuzzMania2 teaser: 1987 Topps WWF cards (wax pack)

The biggest weekend in professional wrestling is nearly here with WrestleMania 35 set for April 7 in New Jersey. While it's a big week for WWE with its NXT and Hall of Fame events planned leading up to that one, we'll make next Tuesday a big day for wrestling collectors right here on The Buzz with #BuzzMania2, a series of WWE wax box and wax pack breaks every hour.

Here's a pack that didn't make the cut for that one ... call it a teaser for a marathon that will focus mostly on newer releases.

Card That Stole The Show: The cream of the crop in this one is the "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Elizabeth card -- their first Topps card appearance after a 1985 O-Pee-Chee debut.

What's Buzz-worthy: This is a pack of just the second Topps WWE set ever made and it was the only set for years after that time despite WrestleMania III being one of the biggest mainstream pop culture moments in wrestling history. The first WWE release was 1985 Topps and the license wasn't back in Topps' hands until 2005. This set includes a number of big stars in familiar looks unlike the 1985 set that showcased stars that weren't as slickly produced and packaged in the ring. By this one, belts had changed styles, official T-shirts were much more of a thing and the characters that are still remembered well were in their primes. This set includes key early cards for many stars such as Bret Hart, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan and others but it's not as pricey as the 1985 release and can be found a little more cheaply. The design is cleaner and crisper but you still aren't assured of perfect cardboard. The gum and the wax stains also create issues. This pack delivered well with the Savage and a couple of other names despite the missing sticker. This is the kind of brand to buy a number of packs or a box if you can find it affordably -- that's how you can build a set somewhat easily or have enough cards to cherry pick for grading. I consider this one a modest-priced classic for earlier sets, though there aren't that many to choose from for the decade -- look for the Hogan-Andre card from Piper's Pit as one example of the memorable moments on cardboard here. Not worth much but a great card.
