Group breaks have been a game-changer for the card industry for several years now and from time to time Buzz will jump into a BlowoutTV break of some type and break down the results of what he landed by picking up a team. There are near-daily breaks right here with Matt on Blowout TV during weekday working hours and even more from Houdini and others over on the forum in the evening.
Now, it's time for this post's break breakdown -- a spot in an MLB mixer with some vintage flair.
INSIDE THE BREAK ...
The Product: An MLB mixer that included a 2020 Bowman Draft box, a 2021 Topps Series 2 jumbo box, a 1979 Topps wax pack and two 2021 Bowman Mega Box Chrome packs.
The Breakdown: Six guaranteed hits ... maybe more
The Price: $40ish
The Team Buzz Landed: Chicago Cubs (via random)
Grab Your Own Box: MLB boxes are here
Initial Reaction: Landing the Cubs in a break like this is pretty good historically speaking with stars from many eras in the franchise and then a bunch of younger stars in recent years ... but will they show up here?
WHAT BUZZ LANDED ... (see everything in gallery below)
Total cards: 25
Base: 22
Veterans/retired (11) – See gallery
Rookies (1) – See gallery
Prospects (10) – See gallery
Inserts: 3
1986 Chrome (1) – Anthony Rizzo (Series 2 box-topper pack)
70 Years of Topps (1) – Javier Baez (Series 2)
Home Run Challenge (1) – Javier Baez (Series 2)
Autographs/Memorabilia: None
Final Thoughts: I haven't done one of these in a while and the 1979 pack in the mix got me to bite along with Bowman Draft's three autos, though the hit volume vs. team volume wasn't that great. What do I mean? One in five spots would get a hit assuming nothing doubled up. I went hitless this time but my biggest highlight here is perhaps the one-per-box Home Run Challenge card. If I can turn that into a winner that might take some sting away. The Donnie Moore card is a second-year card and I guess statistically I bucked the odds getting something from that pack, too, but I still had visions of something different. I did get some of the franchise's young recent stars here, Anthony Rizzo in the Chrome topper pack (only four cards per there) and then Javier Baez and Kris Bryant ... but I typically stick to drafts with big volume of everything and something that comes closer to a guaranteed hit. For the lower price, the breaks like these do have good potential. I beat odds a few times in terms of what I pulled ... but didn't pull anything from a strong team. (FYI: Teams that didn't exist in 1979 got the standard packs from the Mega Box -- those have nothing but base and Chrome.) All in all, I like the mix here for the price ... just didn't work out for me big-time this time.
Product Grade: A (for the mixer contents vs. price)
Break Grade: C+ (average results this time)
