Group breaks have been a game-changer for the card industry for several years now and from time to time Buzz will jump into a BlowoutTV break of some type and break down the results of what he landed by picking up a team. There are near-daily breaks right here with Matt on Blowout TV during weekday working hours and even more from Houdini and others over on the forum in the evening.
Now, it's time for this post's break breakdown -- a spot in an MLB mixer with some vintage flair.
INSIDE THE BREAK ...
The Product: An MLB mixer that included a 2021 Bowman Draft, 2021 Topps Update, 2021 Topps Finest, 2021 Topps Gold Label, 2021 Bowman Sterling, 2021 Bowman Chrome X.
The Breakdown: Nine guaranteed hits ... maybe more
The Price: $46.99
The Team Buzz Landed: San Diego Padres (via random)
Grab Your Own Box: MLB boxes are here
Initial Reaction: Landing the Padres isn't bad here with one top-tier name among the modern possibilities and then some notables possible among legends here.
WHAT BUZZ LANDED ... (see everything in gallery below)
Total cards: 31
Base: 28
Veterans/retired (19) – Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Blake Snell, Drew Pomeranz, Emilio Pagan, Matt Strahm, Mark Melancon, Victor Caratini, Joe Musgrove, Brian O'Grady, Chris Paddack, Wil Myers, Trent Grisham
Rookies (9) – Jake Cronenworth, Jorge Mateo, Jorge Ona, Ryan Weathers, Luis Patino, Ha-Seong Kim
Prospects – None
Inserts: 2
Topps Tek (1) – Fernando Tatis Jr. (box-topper pack)
Topps Black Gold (1) – Fernando Tatis Jr.
Autographs/Memorabilia: 1
Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs (1) – Reginald Preciado
Final Thoughts: I think the Padres paid off pretty well here for the price as the auto alone is one that has sold for $65 just today on eBay and at times as high as $140 so that's a win. Long-term potential is perhaps the key here and in the short-term it's still a win whether I'd move the auto or the Tatis cards. (In reality, I sit on pretty much everything.) I definitely could have done worse but the only things that might have topped it might have been some parallel ink or Tatis ink. The Padres aren't my favorite team but the talent is there and this one paid off on the prospect side.
Product Grade: A (for the mixer contents vs. price)
Break Grade: A (landed one of the hits and Tatis in key spots)
