Buzz's Pick Six: 2018 Panini Playbook football cards

Have you seen the latest cool cards from a new release? With so many options for collectors of all kinds arriving every week it's possible you haven't. That's where Buzz comes in -- well at least on one brand you'll see here from time to time in what we're calling Buzz's Pick Six. Simply put, here are six cards from a new arrival that seemed interesting to this collector and we think they might interest you, too.

FROM THE VAULT ... TO THE VAULT
The Card: Baker Mayfield Playbook Vault Tri-Fold Jersey Auto Premium (1/1)
The Price: $4,599.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: I'd argue that these Vault cards are the most-impressive finds from this booklet-loaded brand and Mayfield might be the hottest rookie right now. The 1/1 versions of these cards are almost comically stacked with logos from various types of memorabilia but they carry a stronger feel than the simpler versions. (Buzz would be happy to pull any of these ... any type, any player ... I like books.) This is a card that will be locked away in a collection somewhere once it goes and it probably won't ever be seen again.

DID YOU MISS THE ROOKIES?
The Card: Calvin Ridley Playbook Rookie Card 
The Price: $5.49 Buy-It-Now
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This brand has hit the retail aisle for the first time and that's the only place where you'll find the standard cardboard for 200 veterans and rookies. I'll take Ridley as a rookie who has delivered big but hasn't dominated all season long, meaning he could be a little cheaper now than he should be ... or could be later. Obviously the hits for him and others will be much bigger deals, but Pick Six won't just be about the biggest and most-expensive cardboard. I'm not that big of a fan of the base design for the veterans in this one (it's a tad dark), but I like the concept of spreading things around in hobby vs. retail. These non-traditional release formats could lead to sleepers in some instances. (This one? We'll see ... it's well-established as a memorabilia-focused brand and that could have people overlooking the retail boxes.)

A BRIGHT RETAIL HIGHLIGHT
The Set: Playbook Play Action insert set (10 cards)
The Price: $19.95 Buy-It-Now
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is one of the inserts in the retail version of Playbook and it's a bright and colorful one that stands out from the pack. I pulled Patrick Mahomes in my blaster and you can see here that it's a stacked simple lineup of star QBs. These would look good with in-person autos, though there are jersey and patch versions to be found.

A HOBBY ODDITY ...
The Card: Alejandro Villanueva Playbook X's and O's Signatures (/199)
The Price: $34.99 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Quick, when was the last time you saw a non-rookie or non-Hall of Fame offensive lineman on a hit? It doesn't happen often and Villanueva has very few autographed cards -- less than 20 right now -- and three of them are in this release. (He also doesn't have a lot of cardboard in general.) This one is the easiest version to pull here, and it's got Gold (/25) and a 1/1 Holo Gold parallel. His military ties give his cards a bit larger audience out there and he's on a team with a strong collector base -- both things that might surprise you if you pull one of these, particularly the rarer versions.

NOT THE CHIEFS QB YOU EXPECTED?
The Card: Len Dawson Playbook Hail Mary Signatures (/75)
The Price: $26.95 Buy-It-Now
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is a nicely balanced card design with an auto, action shot and swatch for a Hall of Famer. Those action shots don't always work well for vintage players in these types of designs, but this one really works for me. Bargain-priced in my mind, too, and you should know Buzz is always about bargains.

HOW 'BOUT THEM COWBOYS?
The Card: Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett and Drew Pearson Playbook Split Six Signatures 1/1 (yellow?) printing plate auto book
The Price: $4,500 Buy-It-Now (or best offer)
Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Look, I know people aren't necessarily fans of stickers and printing plates (or them together), but pulling this one would be crazy cool -- and there are three other plates like it out there as well as standard cardboard versions. Pulling six-auto booklets don't happen in a lot of brands, so this one stands out and it stands out even more with all those Hall of Famers -- for one of the NFL's most-iconic teams -- all in one place.
