Buzz's Pick Six: Newsy autographs on my mind today

Have you seen the latest cool cards from a new release? With so many options for collectors of all kinds arriving every week it's possible you haven't. That's where Buzz comes in -- well at least on one brand you'll see here from time to time in what we're calling Buzz's Pick Six. Simply put, here are six cards from a new arrival that seemed interesting to this collector and we think they might interest you, too.

THE RETIRING CHAMP

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This 44-year-old announced today that the 2020 NASCAR season will be his final campaign as a full-time Cup driver and, in turn, his final shot at becoming the all-time season championship record-holder. He's presently tied with Richard Petty at seven career NASCAR Cup Series titles and has been that way since 2016 when he last took home the crown. In the three seasons since then, his best finish was 10th so it's debatable whether he might make a run in his final lap, but he will be one who is watched heavily. I met and interviewed him when he was a rookie which was fun back in the day but I'm actually not sure if I've ever pulled one of his autographs in my off-and-on time collecting NASCAR stuff. There's a decent amount of ink for him out there -- more than 800 different cards -- but his autograph has always been relatively minimalist, so that's why I never chased one otherwise. I might make sure to track one down now.

LIFE-CHANGING WEEKEND
The Card: Tua Tagovailoa 2017 Leaf U.S. Army All-American Bowl Green Prismatic Proof (1/1)

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: With his Alabama Crimson Tide winning big on Saturday, this likely top (or near-top) pick in the 2020 NFL Draft went into the game just before halftime to run a two-minute drill. He was tackled by a pair of defenders and suffered a dislocated right hip with a suffered a posterior wall fracture. That ended his season and likely his college career and probably hurts his draft status, too, despite a prognosis that could have him back in throwing condition by next spring. His only autographs are found in the 2017 Leaf All-American releases and he's been a pricey one since his unreal arrival on the national stage in the national championship game in 2018. No matter what happens, he's been a legend for a program with plenty of legends. I'm glad I pulled an auto back in the day, but now with auctions like this ... well, they're on my mind to see how the market looks now.

BACK WITH 'PIPEBOMBS'
The Card: CM Punk 2017 Topps Chrome UFC Green Refractor autograph /99

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Punk is sort of (wink wink) back in the WWE fray as a talking head on a new Fox WWE show where he'd going to be offering up his hot takes on the wrestling world without getting back into the ring that he left some six years ago. He has autos from past WWE card sets, appearances in some Upper Deck releases (Goodwin Champions and NHL celebs insert sets) and even has ink from his short-lived UFC time (0-2 record there). He's a dirt-cheap auto right now but there's always time for more people to be watching all of his ink if the teasing of a feud with WWE champ Seth Rollins we've seen so far becomes an in-ring reality.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SIG FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD ...

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: Tom Hanks' bringing Mister Rogers' Neighborhood to the big screen in A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood might get some people out there looking for Hanks' ink -- and that's findable in its minimalist fashion. (I have some signed books, myself.) But Rogers? Not as easily found and far more pricey. Here's one example that's been authenticated and is dated roughly four years before he died at age 74.

DECISION TIME IN WASHINGTON

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: McCain's autograph can likely be found cheaper than this with some looking, but this partilar pick is not ultimately my main point here. There are a ton of notable and expensive autographs to be found in Decision 2016 boxes with some you might know being $1,000 cards -- check out completed ebay sales here. I have yet to rip a single pack of the brand but have contemplated it many times. The release is a landmark one and big things are possible. It's a messy time in Washington D.C. and you can find many of those players and many others in these packs ... so that's why I present this one here.

NEW ARRIVALS
The Card: Josh Jacobs 2019 Panini Playbook rookie patch auto booklet (/49)

Why it’s Buzz-worthy: This is one of a few brand new auto books just hitting eBay for this new release and, like the entry before this, this card here is more as an example of what's to be found out there -- not necessarily one of the biggest Playbook pulls. Speaking generally, I think Playbook is a brand that has plenty of big-hit potential this year ... it's worth a look.
