A collection of postcards, lyrics, notes and more from the early days of legendary and pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath will be hitting the auction block late next month via a Sheffield-based auction house in the United Kingdom.
Among the pieces going up for sale are hand-written postcards from Ozzy Osbourne to his parents, which are signed with his legal name, John, as well as lyrics, posters and flyers from when the band was briefly known as "Earth" and then after it adopted its name inspired by a Boris Karloff film.

Earlier this month the late Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame but this past weekend the treasures from that career entered the hands of collectors around the world.
The auction of "Snake" Stabler's personal collection of memorabilia via Pristine Auction ended on Sunday night with one six-figure item that didn't reach its reserve and many others of note. In all, the auction generated nearly $200,000 in sales.
The priciest item was his 1976 Hickok Belt Award for Professional Athlete of the Year (above), which reached $107,427.60. It's an honor that was awarded the final time with Stabler's win and this is the first copy of the award to hit the open market. It's an 18K gold belt buckle with a three-carat diamond, a three-carat ruby, a three-carat sapphire and 26 diamond chips totaling 5.5 carats.

Katie Ledecky has five Olympic medals in the Rio Games and four of them are gold -- it's a pretty good haul for a 19-year-old.
The one thing she doesn't have, though? A bonafide pack-inserted trading card.
Instead, collectors have a trio of Sports Illustrated for Kids cards -- a staple for the non-traditional sports or young stars not yet professionals found in the pages of the kids magazine as a perforated-sheet bonus. It's a place where LeBron James, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods have made their marks in the past along with many others before traditional card appearances.

"Mr. Hockey" wore plenty of sweaters during his more than 30 seasons on the ice as a professional, but it's still a big deal when one of his gamers hits the auction block.
This one's a $64,843 big deal -- though that still sounds like a bargain -- with more than a week to go in an SCP Auctions sale of the Detroit Red Wings gamer once worn and signed by Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, who owned most notable NHL records until some kid named Wayne Gretzky came along. Howe died earlier this summer at age 88.
“In the field of game-worn hockey jerseys this is a pinnacle artifact," said Dan Imler, who is SCP's vice president, "[it's one] worthy of museum exhibition.”

What is believed to be one of the earliest St. Louis Cardinals jerseys worn by future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols is on the auction block via Goldin Auctions.
Issued with a letter from the St. Louis Cardinals Cardinals Care Community Fund, this No. 68 jersey was used in his spring training with the team in 2001, though it's tagged as a 2000 jersey. It's signed on the back with that autograph further authenticated by JSA.

More than 450 lots of memorabilia from the collection of a former Alabama Crimson Tide and Oakland Raiders great are headed into collectors' hands soon as they are now on the auction block.
Trophies, game-used memorabilia and more from the collection of Ken Stabler, who will be posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 6, are up for grabs after his family decided to part with them. "Snake" died in July 2015 after a brief battle with colon cancer.
"In honoring Ken Stabler’s requests, his family has chosen to make items from his personal career collection available to the fans of Mr. Stabler’s career through Pristine Auction," read a release from the Phoenix-based company. "It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity ... to obtain a piece of sports memorabilia owned by legendary Oakland Raiders quarterback and 2016 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Ken Stabler."

A big baseball card is heading to the auction block once again.
A PSA 5 (MC) copy of the 1909 T206 Honus Wagner -- the most-valuable baseball card of all time -- is headed back to the auction block this fall via Goldin Auctions. The Runnemede, N.J.-based company announced the news on Thursday, noting that it will be up for grabs in its "Great American Trading Card Auction" in September after it goes on display at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, N.J.
"Serious collectors understand that every time a card like this is offered for auction, it may be the last time for a long time," said Ken Goldin, the founder of the auction house. "The excitement that the auction of a T206 Wagner generates, coupled with the current booming market for high-grade trading cards, creates the perfect storm for establishing a new standard for sports memorabilia."

Christy Mathewson game-used memorabilia is elusive and expensive with the term "museum collection" being very applicable because there's just one game-used jersey known to be in the hands of a private individual.
And that one gamer, a 1900-04 New York Giants jersey, is headed to the auction block in late August via Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.
"This Platinum Night auction will close within weeks of the centennial of Mathewson's final pitching appearance, the last of a staggering tally of 373 major league victories, third best in baseball history," reads the auction description. "The Sept. 4, 1916, contest against fellow pitching legend Mordecai Brown would likewise prove to be the last game of Three Fingers' career. And in that century that has elapsed since that battle of aging titans, only a single example of Mathewson's game-worn jerseys has surfaced within the collecting community.
"Heritage Auctions is honored and privileged by the opportunity to present that garment."

NBA star Dwayne Wade is in the headlines as he's looking for a new contract either to remain with the Miami Heat or join forces with other free agents elsewhere, but no matter where he signs he'll have enough scratch to land himself another NBA championship ring.
This one belonged to his former mother-in-law and it will be up for sale in August via SCP Auctions.

The helmet that Mike Piazza used in the first game after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be on the auction block and sold during an auction during the National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, N.J.
The New York Mets catcher and Hall of Famer's helmet will be sold via Goldin Auctions with 50 percent of the buyer's premium headed to a New York-based charity, Tuesday's Children, which supports first-responders and their families.
"We are very lucky to have the opportunity to share such an important piece of baseball history and at the same time support the worthwhile work of this wonderful organization that supports those affected by the events of Sept. 11," said Ken Goldin, the founder of Goldin Auctions. "Similar to Piazza's jersey from that night, this helmet will forever connect fans to one of the most memorable moments in Mets history. Those who were lucky enough to be there, or view it on television will never forget it."

The greatest copy of The Great One's greatest card will be sold later this summer.
It's the only PSA 10 copy of Wayne Gretzky's 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Rookie Card, and it will be on the block for the first time in five years as part of the Goldin Auctions sale during the National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlantic City, N.J., on Aug. 4.
"The fact that just one card has achieved this perfect grading is remarkable," said Ken Goldin, the founder of the auction house. "With the recent surge in interest among serious collectors for high-grade examples of Rookie Cards, we expect this Gretzky card to establish a new benchmark. The average sales for a PSA 9 Gretzky's has increased 600 percent in the past five years. If this card were to see a similar increase, it might become hockey's first $500,000 trading card."

The impressive stash of 1992 Olympic Dream Team memorabilia will probably get the post-sale attention, but there are a few other big-ticket items presently the auction block and ending in the next few days via Heritage Auctions.
The weirdest? Al Capone's fingerprints.
In 1929, Capone provided these prints after he was sent to the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. It's an 8-inch square document that's also signed by Capone -- and it's presently sitting at $44,000 ($52,580 with a buyer's premium) with two days remaining in the sale.
Sure, it's not a sports item -- but there are some big pieces in that world that more than a few collectors would want to get their hands on in this auction. Keep reading for more.
