We've already revisited the 1969 Topps set for potential variations, but Topps has confirmed one that's not based on the past that will arrive in packs of 2018 Topps Heritage beginning on Wednesday.

It's a "Nickname variation" where a player's moniker replaces his team -- a move that we last saw in a similar way during Players Weekend last season when players wore nicknames on the backs of their jerseys.

These cards are still a bit of an unknown -- for a list and the odds -- but we do know the odds for a number of finds in those hobby boxes coming in two days.

Major League Baseball will have its players wear Stoneman Douglas caps today to help raise funds for victims of last week's school shooting in Florida.

The caps will be worn, signed and auctioned to benefit a victim's fund.

Among them will be Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo -- a 2007 graduate of the school -- and the tributes will also be part of Topps Now cardboard now available.

You may not know his name, but his work helped shape a big part of the hobby you know today.

He's Jefferson Burdick and he spent a big part of his life documenting the hobby as as he built The American Card Catalog, which helped classify cards made before 1951. He's one of four recipients of this year's Henry Chadwick Award from SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research.

The award was established in 2009 "to honor baseball's great researchers — historians, statisticians, annalists and archivists — for their invaluable contributions to making baseball the game that links America’s present with its past."

You won't have to wait for 2018 Topps Series 2 to get a Shohei Ohtani baseball card with the flagship design.

Topps revealed the checklists for its lineup of team sets on Thursday and the newly signed star from Japan is among the players listed for the Los Angeles Angels.

A uniform worn by Babe Ruth is on the auction block and it's not yet surpassed the $100,000 mark with a couple days to go before the final gavel.

There's little doubt that Ruth's 1945 Esquire All-America Game coaching uniform will get there, though, as it's estimated by Heritage Auctions to top $200,000.

And that's nothing compared to what his New York Yankees jerseys have sold for, making this one a bargain.

Now that we know what the 2018 Topps Heritage baseball card checklist looks like, we can now ponder the possibilities for errors and variations that are an homage to the 1969 Topps set that this one is modeled after.

And it's that set from the past -- one with a number of errors made back then -- that can offer the clues when those are compared to who appears on the set slated to arrive next week.

One favorite mistake that wasn't corrected back in 1969 probably won't get an homage in this one as Heritage is merely a 500-card set. The 1969 Topps Aurelio Rodriguez -- one that famously shows batboy Leonard Garcia -- is card No. 653. (Maybe we'll get that one in Heritage High Number?)

We're about a week away from the arrival of 2018 Topps Heritage, which gives us a trip back to 1969 this season and that means one thing -- a peek at the checklist.

We'll start with the autographs and there will be a mix of past and present names signing for this one, including a number of rookies.

Among the standard autos? Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski, Al Kaline, Hank Aaron, Johnny Bench, Orlando Cepeda, Jim Palmer, Lou Brock, Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Steve Carlton and Reggie Jackson, who will also have Rookie Card buyback autos in these packs with his RC coming back in 1969.

The first jersey that Boston Red Sox Andrew Benintendi wore for his first official game commanded big money on the auction block over the weekend, reinforcing that last year's Rookie of the Year crop went deeper than just that one New York Yankees guy.

This jersey sold for $14,730 after 19 bids via Goldin Auctions after opening at just $1,000 -- and that was enough to make one wonder if there might be more action to come for the cards of the ROY runner-up in his sophomore season.

The author of one of the most-dominating seasons in Dodgers history will be doing a little more writing soon.

He's former Brooklyn Dodgers ace Don Newcombe and he's got a public autograph signing set for March 4 at Cardboard Legends in Van Nuys, Calif.

In 1956, he went 27-7 with a 3.06 ERA en route to MVP and Cy Young award honors -- and that was the year after he helped Brooklyn to a World Series title, downing the New York Yankees in seven games. He made his big-league debut back in 1949 at age 23, going 17-8 with a 3.17 ERA before he was named the NL Rookie of the Year. He retired after the 1960 season with a 149-90 record and a 3.56 ERA.
