National Baseball Card Day is this Saturday.

The hobby shop event will have participating stores in the United States and Canada giving away free six-card packs to visitors. It's a promotion that hasn't been done since 2008.

The newest Mr. 3,000 already has the cardboard to prove it.

Ichiro Suzuki's triple off the wall in the seventh inning Sunday at Coors Field in Colorado made him just the 30th player in MLB history to join the 3,000 Hit Club and today he's the first to have the feat nearly instantly commemorated on cardboard with a Topps Now card.

There is one standard card and five game-used base Relics -- a standard card limited to 99 and then four parallels made to as rare as a single copy for $999. (Update: Each of the base Relics was sold out within 30 minutes, with the print run generating $46,318.16 in sales based on the posted prices. Update 2: A record 11,550 copies of the standard card were sold.)

Topps Now, of course, is Topps' real-time cardboard platform where notable moments are only available for 24 hours via Topps.com and are made to order. After that window closes, the cards will no longer be made and can only be found on the secondary market.

Alex Rodriguez's playing time with the New York Yankees is coming to an end on Friday.

How many games he might play between now and then is up in the air with a road trip to Boston, but the end as a player is definitely at home on Friday with an advisory role signed through next season if he wants it. However, he insisted that he's "not a coach" and stopped short of saying he'd never play again. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said he'd have an open door if he wanted to play elsewhere.

It's been a long journey with cardboard that looks back to his high school days, time with USA Baseball and throughout his years with Seattle, Texas and New York.

Pearl Jam has three dates to come lined up in some notable baseball stadiums this month and that combination of concerts and landmark MLB parks means one thing.

Baseball cards.

It also means some pretty sweet concert posters like the one above by artist Steve Thomas, but it's the band's 60-card set of "baseball cards" with a distinct 1991 Topps style complete with wax-paper packaging that are sparking interest online.

The glass negative plates for some of the most-iconic baseball photographs of all time are hitting the open market via Heritage Auctions.

It's the Charles M. Conlon collection and it consists of 7,462 different images taken by the photographer whose work was owned by The Sporting News after his death in 1945. The collection was recently purchased by collector John Rogers so the negatives could be digitized for commercial reproduction.

"With audio and video recordings of the pre-war game extremely limited in population," reads the auction house description, "The Charles Conlon Photographic Archive is, quite simply, the most important and comprehensive record of early twentieth century baseball that exists, the DNA that gave birth to our collective vision of that time."
