Collecting Game-used: Before they were World Series winners

This month's item in the Collecting Game-used series is one that's simple ... but it shows the life of a ball can be brief but still have some fun trivia attached.

This one? It's another of my $10 bargain-bin balls picked up about a year ago now -- but it's one that now has two World Series rings attached to it. It's nothing too dramatic in terms of use, but visually it does show more than others out there might when it comes to game-used baseballs.

THE BASICS ...

The matchup: Phillies SP Drew Smyly vs. Braves SS Dansby Swanson
The result: Ball in dirt during fourth-inning at-bat in a 9-5 Phillies win

What's Buzz-worthy: This one is a simple curveball in the dirt which you can see in the video gets immediately handed back to the ump by catcher J.T. Realmuto afterward. The ball is from then-Phillies starter Drew Smyly who is now a Braves pitcher and had a career year with an 11-4 record this season and added three postseason appearances to get himself a ring along with Swanson, who is the "name" player who made me pick this one out of the bargain bin (spreadsheet) when the Phillies burned off baseballs at season's end last year. Are there any particular milestones here? Probably not with this duo but Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies both homered in the loss. All that infield dirt from Citizens Bank Park does help the visual appeal here for sure, though, but it's an affordable ball -- again, only $10 -- with a good name attached. Simple as that.
