Cory Hahn revisits play that changed his life in piece for Players Tribune

Cory-Hahn-USA-auto Not long ago, Cory Hahn was a USA Baseball player and a promising prep star who joined the Arizona State Sun Devils -- the program that's produced Dustin Pedroia, Barry Bonds and Reggie Jackson -- with some big-league dreams of his own.

Now, though, he works for an MLB team -- in the front office because he can't walk, let alone take the outfield like he used to.

You might know Hahn's story if you're a prospector, but he recapped his story in a piece published today on The Players Tribune -- one that looks back at a fluke play in just his third college game that changed his life forever. It's worth a read.

"These days, I’m not much of a ballplayer," he wrote, "although in my heart I always will be."

s-l1600 He was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 34th round of the 2013 MLB Draft and currently works for the team in its baseball operations department, helping assess players.

Thanks to his USA Baseball stint, Hahn appears on nearly 50 different baseball cards from Upper Deck and Topps beginning back in 2009 and more than 20 of those are certified autographs. He was drafted by the Padres in 2010 -- not long after his cards arrived -- but opted for a college career instead of chasing his big-league dreams.

"I’d be lying to you if I said that I didn’t sift through the what-ifs whenever I’m watching a game for work or lying in bed at night," he wrote. "It’s tough stuff, and honestly, I struggle with it on a regular basis. ... I’ve realized that I’ve come a long way and have been able to do so much good — that I’ve been able to inspire people. To me, that’s what it’s all about. I promise you I will never give up, I will win this battle, I will walk again."
