Could Pokémon boosters be the hottest boxes of the last two decades?
Well, if you look at the prices of those booster boxes of the past over at Blowout's Most Wanted -- boxes that only started arriving made for the U.S. market in 1999 -- the answer is arguably a big ol' Snorlax-sized "yes."
Why do I say that? What you see above is one of the reasons -- it's a Pokémon Neo Destiny 1st Edition Booster Box and the current buy price on the Most Wanted list is a cool $30,500 right now.
The scary part -- especially for all of you sports collectors that might have scoffed at gaming in the past -- is that it's not alone. Not even close.
Of the 34 boxes updated just today or newly added to the Most Wanted list, eight of them checked in with a buy price of $10,500 or more and 30 of those updated today check in at $1,000 or more.
The biggie of the bunch, though not among today's updates, is a Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Booster Box (above) that has a buying price of $300,000.
I'm not sure any ongoing brand of the last 20 years could have such demand. Why? Well, many Pokémon boxes got ripped to play ... so singles may not be the easiest finds, especially for those who like to grade, and the boxes those untouched perfect cards have come from basically don't exist now. (Let alone in the volumes that allow for people who had them in the past to buy now and rip to slab and put away.)
It's arguably a perfect storm that sports cards can't really emulate with so many brands and niches splintering interest in so many directions -- and despite that there are still many sports releases out there likely having higher print runs than Pokémon stuff. Sure, there are a ton of past Pokémon releases, too, just look at the Most Wanted list, but odds are you've seen other sports stuff a lot more recently than those. But knowing what to look for is half of the battle and this list helps there, too.
